2
3 * fsck.8.in: Document new fsck exit code, FSCK_CANCELED.
4
5 * fsck.c: Trap SIGINT and SIGTERM, and relay it to all of the
6 child fsck processes.
7
Theodore Ts'o70988102002-07-14 08:00:00 -040082002-07-14 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
9
10 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Clear the buffer *after* testing for the
11 BSD sector label. Otherwise the first 512 bytes don't get
12 zapped. (Addresses Debian bug #147256.)
13

15
16 * mke2fs.8.in: Cleaned up man page, and made it a bit more
17 OS-agnostic. Addresses Debian bug #144621. Hope this
18 makes the Hurd whiners happy. :-)

29
30 * mke2fs.c (set_fs_defaults): make the default inode ratio at most
31 one inode per block for large blocksizes.
32
Theodore Ts'o31e29a12002-05-17 10:53:07 -0400332002-05-17 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
34
35 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Determine the page size using sysconf() at
36 runtime, instead of using the Linux system header files.
37
382002-05-16 Andreas Dilger <adilger@clusterfs.com>
39
40 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Allow blocksizes larger than 4k to be specified,
41 with warning printed and the user questioned if blocksize
42 is larger than the system's page size according to the
43 Linux kernel header files. Added better checking for
44 valid inode sizes, and again print a warning message if
45 using a large inode size (since most kernels today don't
46 support this yet).

Theodore Ts'o7d4343d2002-02-12 02:34:44 -050096
97 * get_device_by_label.c: Since on non-STDC compilers, we define
98 away const, include get_device_by_label.h after we include
99 fsck.h.
100
101 * Makefile.in (base_device): Remove use of $<, which is
102 non-portable.

106 * Release of E2fsprogs 1.26
107
1082002-02-03 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o5599c2f2002-02-03 00:08:52 -0500109
110 * fsck.c (interpret_type): Allow filesystems types of the form
111 "ext3,ext2", etc.
112
113 * fstype.c (identify_fs): Add support for only searching for a

Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001172002-01-29 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'oa1069112002-01-29 12:49:14 -0500118
119 * fsck.c: Allow the number of outstanding processes fs-specific
120 fsck programs to be capped via the FSCK_MAX_INST
121 envrionment variable.
122
123 * fsck.8.in: Document all of the environment variables used by fsck.
124
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001252002-01-27 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o177ab2b2002-01-27 18:23:49 -0500126
127 * tune2fs.8.in: Document the -f flag to tune2fs.
128
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001292002-01-02 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o5493a272002-01-02 14:15:35 -0500130
131 * badblocks.c (main): Open the device as O_RDWR if possible, since
132 fsync() isn't guaranteed to work if the filesystem is
133 opened read-only.
134
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001352001-12-26 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'od4de4aa2001-12-26 08:58:01 -0500136
137 * tune2fs.8.in, tune2fs.c (parse_tune2fs_options, main): Add
138 support for new option, -T, which allows the user to set
139 the last checked time on the filesystem.
140
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001412001-12-24 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o6a525062001-12-24 09:40:00 -0500142
Theodore Ts'o3ed57c22001-12-24 15:01:59 -0500143 * mke2fs.c (main, test_disk): If two -c options are
144 specified, then perform a destructive read/write test
145 of the disk.
146
147 * mke2fs.8.in: Document the double -c option; also encourage users
148 to use -c instead of the -l/-L options since it's too hard
149 for users to get things like the blocksize parameter correct.
150
151 * badblocks.8.in: Encourage users to use the -c option in mke2fs
152 and e2fsck instead of running badblocks directly.
153
Theodore Ts'o6a525062001-12-24 09:40:00 -0500154 * mke2fs.c (create_lost_and_found): The lost+found directory is
155 now created with 0700 permissions, since files which get
156 dropped into that directory may have come from a protected
157 directory, and the system administrator may not deal with
158 immediately. (Addresses Debian bug #118443)
159
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001602001-12-23 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o19007e52001-12-23 19:33:51 -0500161
162 * Makefile.in, jfs_user.h: Move linux/jbd.h to
163 ext2fs/kernel-jbd.h, to avoid using the system header
164 file version of hbd.h when using diet glibc (since it
165 forcibly adds /usr/include to the beginning of the
166 include search path.)
167
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001682001-12-22 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'oeaf4dc52001-12-22 00:04:22 -0500169
170 * get_device_by_label.c (init_lvm): Add support to read out
171 information from the LVM proc hierarchy, so that the UUID
172 cache can search the LVM logical volumes for UUID's,
173 labels, etc.
174
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001752001-12-21 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o0655b102001-12-21 23:59:46 -0500176
177 * dumpe2fs.c (list_bad_blocks): Change to not die if the listing
178 of the bad blocks can't be found. Slimmed down dumpe2fs
179 by eliminating duplicate code paths.
180

Theodore Ts'o4ea7bd02001-12-16 23:23:37 -0500183 * dumpe2fs.c (list_desc), fsck.c (fs_match),
184 get_device_by_label.c (get_label_uuid),
185 mke2fs.c (set_fs_defaults, zap_sector, PRS),
186 tune2fs.c (remove_journal_device, update_feature_set),
187 util.c (figure_journal_size), util.h: Fix gcc -Wall nits.
188
189 * e2image.c (write_raw_image_file): Fix gcc -Wall nits, and use
190 the stashed inode functions to optimize away system calls.
191
Theodore Ts'o8cf93332001-12-16 02:23:36 -0500192 * Makefile.in, jfs_user.h: linux/jfs.h has been renamed to
193 linux/jbd.h
194
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001952001-12-02 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'oa5f0bb92001-12-02 19:29:35 +0100196
197 * dumpe2fs.c: Don't print the offset to the bitmap and inode table
198 if it's negative. Also did some generalized code clean up
199 to slim it down the support of the -x option.
200
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002012001-11-24 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'oa36cf922001-11-24 16:13:49 -0500202
203 * e2image.8.in: Fix cut-and-paste typo (Addresses Debian bug

Theodore Ts'o6ef39202001-11-13 18:49:09 -0500207
208 * util.c (check_plausibility): Use stat64 if available so that
209 check_plausibility() works with files > 2GB.
210
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002112001-11-05 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>

Theodore Ts'ob3f5b4c2001-11-05 19:22:02 -0500213 * chattr.1.in: Update the man page to document the EXT2_NOTAIL_FL
214 flag.
215
216 * chattr.c: Add support for the EXT2_NOTAIL_FL flag.
217
Theodore Ts'o6430bd62001-11-05 18:58:46 -0500218 * fsck.c (interpret_type): If the "auto" type is specified, make
219 sure interpet_device() is called so that device
220 specifications which use LABEL= or UUID= are translated
221 into a real device name.
222
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002232001-10-12 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'oe3ef3502001-11-05 18:57:43 -0500224
225 * e2image.c (output_meta_data_blocks): Optimize away excess
226 lseek() calls when creating a sparse file. Fewer system
227 calls are a good thing. <g>
228

Theodore Ts'of6a6afc2001-09-19 18:27:39 -0400241 * tune2fs.c (remove_journal_inode): Remove dead code that wasn't
242 in use.
243
Theodore Ts'o39567c42001-09-19 15:28:21 -0400244 * tune2fs.8.in: Update man page to reflect the fact that adding or
245 removing a journal doesn't require running e2fsck.
246
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002472001-09-13 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>

Theodore Ts'o177a9ac2001-08-30 18:07:40 -04002642001-08-30 Theodore Tso <tytso@valinux.com>
265
266 * badblocks.8.in: Fix spelling typo. (Addresses Debian bug #110621)
267
Theodore Ts'o04a96852001-08-30 21:55:26 -0400268 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Now takes a third argument, which is how
269 many sectors to clear out. Fixed up Andreas's patch to
270 make it a bit more efficient/compact.
271
Andreas Dilger59f27242001-08-30 15:39:04 -06002722001-08-30 Andreas Dilger <adilger@turbolinux.com>
273
274 * mke2fs.c (main): Zap the second sector of the disk, along with
275 any sectors in the same filesystem block after the superblock.
276 The latter will remove (for example) swapspace signatures
277 on 4kB+ blocksize filesystems. Also when zeroing the "end"
278 of the filesystem don't actually zero the start of a very
279 small device (less than 64 blocks).
280
Theodore Ts'o0f8973f2001-08-27 12:44:23 -04002812001-08-27 Theodore Tso <tytso@valinux.com>
282
Andreas Dilger59f27242001-08-30 15:39:04 -0600283 * fsck.c (main): Make version display consistent with the other
Theodore Ts'o0f8973f2001-08-27 12:44:23 -0400284 e2fsprogs programs.
285
286 * lsattr.c, chattr.c, mke2fs.c, tune2fs.c, dumpe2fs.c, e2image.c,
287 mklost+found.c: Remove EXT2FS_VERSION from the version
288 display, since it only confuses people.
289
Theodore Ts'oe843c762001-08-18 14:22:25 -04002902001-08-18 Theodore Tso <tytso@valinux.com>
291
292 * tune2fs.c (remove_journal_device): Remove unused variable
293 check_uuid.
294
295 * get_device_by_label.h: Define function prototype for
296 copy_string(), since this was moved from fsck.c to
297 get_device_by_label.c by Andreas's BK changeset.
298
Andreas Dilger2d155762001-08-17 03:48:11 -06002992001-08-17 Andreas Dilger <adilger@turbolinux.com>
300
301 * get_device_by_label.[ch], fsck.c, util.c: New interpret_spec()
302 function in get_device_by_label.c to allow the use of
303 UUID= or LABEL= when creating filesystems which use external
304 journal dev (e.g. mke2fs -J device=LABEL=<journal_label>).
305
306 * tune2fs.c: Use superblock s_journal_uuid to locate an external
307 journal device instead of s_journal_dev when removing it.
308 Allow opening journal devices to set the label and UUID
309 in the ext2 superblock.
310
311 * mke2fs.c, tune2fs.c: Free journal_device after use, as it is
312 malloc'd in interpret spec.
313

315
Theodore Ts'o943ed872001-08-27 12:29:22 -0400316 * Release of E2fsprogs 1.23
317
3182001-08-15 Theodore Tso <tytso@valinux.com>
319
Theodore Ts'o7141b542001-08-15 19:17:37 -0400320 * tune2fs.c: Make sure that error messages are sent to stderr, and
321 normal messages are sent to stdout. (Addresses Debian bug
322 #108555.)
323
Theodore Ts'o1d349cc2001-08-15 19:06:55 -0400324 * fsck.8.in: Fixed error in synopsis of the man page.
325
Theodore Ts'o88f8af62001-08-15 18:39:51 -0400326 * fsck.c (check_all): Don't bother to interpret a device where the
Theodore Ts'o685c13f2001-08-15 19:04:59 -0400327 pass number is zero. (Addresses Debian bug #106696.)

660 * mke2fs.c: Add support for creating an external journal device by
661 using the command "mke2fs -O journal_dev /dev/XXX". Also
662 changed the external journal code so -j device=/dev/XXX it
663 simply adds a filesystem to that journal; the journal must
664 have been created via separate step.
665
666 * dumpe2fs.c (print_journal_information): Add support for dumping
667 information about an external journal device.
668

670
Theodore Ts'o44c09c02001-01-14 17:02:09 +0000671 * mke2fs.c: Add new filesystem types, largefile and largefile4,
672 for those filesystems whose average inode size is 1MB and
673 4MB, respectively. Allow the inode ratio specified to be
674 has high as 4MB. Make the s_max_mount_count vary between
675 20 and 40, to avoid needing to check all of the
676 filesystems at the same time. Add some random jitter to
677 the s_max_mount_count value so that we avoid checking all
678 of the filesystems at the same time when we reboot.
679
Theodore Ts'o08dd8302001-01-14 16:25:58 +0000680 * tune2fs.8.in: Add description of the -j option.
681
Theodore Ts'o4055ef72001-01-14 16:11:14 +0000682 * tune2fs.c (add_journal): Minor fixes from Andreas Dilger. Flush
683 stdout after printing in-progress message.
684 (main): Exit with status code 1 if we failed to determine
685 the mount status of the device.
686

688
Theodore Ts'oc8c071a2001-01-11 16:08:23 +0000689 * e2image.c, mke2fs.c, mklost+found.c, tune2fs.c, util.c,
690 uuidgen.c: Fix gcc -Wall complaints, including one bug in
691 tune2fs caused by a block automatic shadowing version of
692 the variable we really wanted to use, which broke the
693 logic testing to see if the filesystem was mounted.
694
Theodore Ts'o4d404542001-01-11 16:04:59 +0000695 * badblocks.c (flush_bufs): Use ext2fs_sync_device() to sync and
696 flush the device.
697
Theodore Ts'odfcdc322001-01-11 15:38:00 +0000698 * mke2fs.c: Change ino_t to ext2_ino_t.

Theodore Ts'o83238152001-01-09 00:16:26 +00007002001-01-08 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
701
702 * Makefile.in, tune2fs.c: Move e2label functionality into tune2fs,
703 using argv[0] as a dispatch. This allows e2label to be
704 (more) safely used on mounted filesystems.
705
Theodore Ts'o8820c792001-01-06 04:20:03 +00007062001-01-05 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
707
708 * get_device_by_label.h (get_volume_label_by_spec): Add function
709 prototype.
710
711 * get_device_by_label.c: Use string_copy() instead of strdup() for
712 portability's sake. Fix a few other gcc -Wall
713 complaints.
714
715 * fsck.c (string_copy): Export string_copy() extern.
716
717 * badblocks.c: Fix various gcc -Wall complaints, including
718 an incorrect reference to sync in flush_bufs().
719
Theodore Ts'o63985322001-01-03 17:02:13 +00007202001-01-03 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
721
722 * tune2fs.c (update_feature_set, add_journal): Moved to separate
723 functions. Added ability to add and remove the journal
724 while the filesystem is live. Added support for setting
725 a time-based UUID. Removed zero-initialized static variables.
726
727 * mke2fs.c, util.c, util.h (strcasecmp, proceed_question,
728 check_plausibility, parse_journal_opts, check_mount):
729 Moved functions to util.c so they can be used by tune2fs.
730
731 * mke2fs.c (main): Change ext2fs_add_journal_fs() to
732 ext2fs_add_journal_inode() to reflect function renaming.
733
Theodore Ts'ob21e38a2001-01-01 15:26:58 +00007342001-01-01 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
735
Theodore Ts'oef9abe52001-01-01 15:31:53 +0000736 * mke2fs.c, e2image.c: Removed references to struct ext2fs_sb to
737 struct ext2_super_block.
738
Theodore Ts'ob21e38a2001-01-01 15:26:58 +0000739 * tune2fs.c (main): Add support to allow HAS_JOURNAL flag to be
740 cleared, but only if the filesystem is unmounted or
741 mounted read-only. Changed struct ext2fs_sb to struct
Theodore Ts'oef9abe52001-01-01 15:31:53 +0000742 ext2_super_block, and cleaned up old code which was needed
743 for old versions of ext2_fs.h (not needed since we're
744 using our own version now).

747
Theodore Ts'od4cf2fc2000-12-31 14:09:38 +0000748 * fsck.c (check_all): Call interpet_device to resolve LABEL= and
749 UUID= right away so that the device_already_active() logic
750 can do the right thing. Also cleaned up the the root
751 filesystem logic checking code; fixed up a logic bug with
752 the parallel_root option.
753
Theodore Ts'of10748d2000-12-31 13:55:14 +0000754 * lsattr.1.in: Add pointer to chattr man page for definition of
755 the file attributes.
756
757 * lsattr.c (list_attributes): Minor cleanup to smooth out logic
758 flow. Also removed static initialized variables to zero.
759
Theodore Ts'o9a718842000-12-31 13:48:12 +0000760 * chattr.c (decode_arg, get_flag): Use a table-driven method for
761 decoding the ext2 file flags character options. Add
762 support for the journaled data flag.
763
764 * chattr.1.in: Document the -j/+j/=j flag.
765
Theodore Ts'o16ad3332000-12-31 03:21:56 +00007662000-12-30 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
767
768 * mke2fs.8.in: Minor clarity edit.
769
770 * mke2fs.c (usage): Document the -j option.
771 (main): Print the number blocks used in the journal.

774
775 * base_device.c (base_device): Add support for DAC960 device
776 names.
777
778 * fsck.c (device_already_active): Handle the case where
779 base_device doesn't know how to interpret the device name,
780 instead of core dumping.
781
Theodore Ts'o74a74d22000-12-09 14:33:29 +00007822000-12-09 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
783
Theodore Ts'od48755e2000-12-09 14:36:04 +0000784 * mke2fs.c (main, parse_journal_opts): Add support for creating V1
785 superblocks. We now pass in a journal_flags field to the
786 journal creation routines for this purpose.
787
788 * mke2fs.c: Remove zero initializers to save a few bytes from the
789 executable image. (Are we excited yet?)
790
Theodore Ts'o74a74d22000-12-09 14:33:29 +0000791 * findsuper.c: And non-subtle copyright licensing restriction to
792 get Yann to remove this program from the Debian package. :-)
793
Theodore Ts'o793e27d2000-12-03 06:33:56 +00007942000-12-03 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
795
796 * fsck.c (device_already_active): Change to use new version of
797 base_device() which now returns dynamically allocated
798 memory.
799
800 * base_device.c (base_device): New version moved from fsck.c which
801 now understands ugly devfs names. (Debian bug #65181)
802
803 * base_device.tst: Test case for base_device.c
804
Theodore Ts'oe1c6b2f2000-12-02 06:19:33 +00008052000-12-02 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
806
Theodore Ts'o2d091792000-12-02 07:03:32 +0000807 * fsck.8.in: Add clarification that filesystems with a fs_passno
808 of 0 are skipped with the -A option. (Debian wishlist/bug
809 #63442)
810
Theodore Ts'oe9f9dd82000-12-02 06:35:07 +0000811 * fsck.c (wait_one): When we let a new fsck take control of the
812 console to display the progress bar, set FLAG_PROGRESS to
813 so that fsck knows not to start new processes during an
814 fsck pass with the progress bar. (Should fix debian bug
815 #65267)
816
Theodore Ts'oe1c6b2f2000-12-02 06:19:33 +0000817 * tune2fs.8.in: Add clarifying statement about converting user and
818 group names to uid's before storing them in the
819 superblock. (Debian bug #67446)
820
Theodore Ts'o8ddaa662000-11-17 04:55:24 +00008212000-11-16 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
822
823 * mke2fs.c(main): Expand the -j option so that it parses
824 option=argument style options, and add support for
825 creating filesystems with external journals.
826
827 * mke2fs.8.in: Document new syntax for the -j option.
828
Theodore Ts'o72ed1262000-11-12 19:32:20 +00008292000-11-05 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>

831 * e2image.c, Makefile.in: New program which saves ext2 metadata to
832 a file for people who need a last-ditch saving throw.
833
Theodore Ts'o85ef4ae2000-10-24 19:33:45 +00008342000-10-24 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
835
Theodore Ts'of6f65832000-10-25 03:01:37 +0000836 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Applied Andreas Dilger's patch to make the -r -s
837 handling a bit more sane. (Even though -s is deprecated
838 at this point.)
839
Theodore Ts'o0056be12000-10-25 02:24:33 +0000840 * get_device_by_label.c: Apply fix from Erik Troan to support 16
841 character labels.
842
Theodore Ts'o43819662000-10-25 02:06:09 +0000843 * fsck.c (device_already_active): Add a special case check for MD
844 devices, so we don't try to check them in parallel with
845 other devices.
846
Theodore Ts'o85ef4ae2000-10-24 19:33:45 +0000847 * mke2fs.c (PRS, main), mke2fs.8.in: Add support for the -j
848 option, which builds an ext2/3 filesystem with an ext3
849 journal.
850
Theodore Ts'oe294cf22000-10-24 18:41:44 +00008512000-10-24 <tytso@valinux.com>
852
853 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Fix really stupid typo which gcc 2.95
854 didn't catch.
855
Theodore Ts'o3f1e9a52000-09-12 21:21:52 +00008562000-09-12 <tytso@valinux.com>

859 systems with four IDE interfaces.
860
Theodore Ts'od7e39b02000-09-11 17:01:35 +00008612000-09-11 <tytso@valinux.com>
862
863 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Fix error message printed when zap_sector
864 fails.
865
866 * dumpe2fs.c (list_desc): Fixed format string bug when printing
867 the inode table location in non-hex format.
868
Theodore Ts'o556ccbd2000-08-20 19:11:05 +00008692000-08-20 <tytso@valinux.com>
870
871 * get_device_by_label.c: Add call to ext2fs_find_block_device if
872 we can't find the device using the name given by
873 /proc/partitions. (This can happen if devfs is compiled
874 into the kernel, but not mounted.)
875
Theodore Ts'o80c22c92000-08-14 15:32:11 +00008762000-06-27 Andreas Dilger <adilger@turbolabs.com>
877
878 * dumpe2fs.c (usage): add fhx options to usage message, add -x option
879 to print out the per-group block numbers in hex, add line for
880 location of primary/backup superblock and group descriptors
881
882 * mke2fs.c: rename max to group_blk_max avoid potential macro conflict
883
Theodore Ts'oe41784e2000-08-14 14:44:15 +00008842000-08-14 <tytso@valinux.com>
885
886 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Change zap_bootsect to more general
887 zap_sect.
888 (main): Clear the superblock when starting mke2fs, to
889 avoid leaving the filesystem in an inconsistent state.
890
Theodore Ts'o28412de2000-07-27 02:45:55 +00008912000-07-26 <tytso@valinux.com>
892
893 * get_device_by_label.c: Improve /proc/partitions parsing in
894 fsck, and speed up fsck -a.
895
Theodore Ts'of9e67062000-07-13 23:25:54 +00008962000-07-13 <tytso@valinux.com>
897
898 * Release of E2fsprogs 1.19
899
Theodore Ts'oa551b782000-07-13 22:05:31 +00009002000-07-13 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
901
902 * badblocks.8.in: Added text explaining that the -n and -w options
903 are mutually exclusive.
904
905 * badblocks.c (usage): Fix usage message to make it clear that the
906 block count must be specified if the starting block is to
907 be specified. (The starting block should be a option, in
908 the long run.)
909
910 * badblocks.c (test_nd): Save and restore the currently_testing
911 variable before going into the write verification loop.
912 This avoids a loop termination problem if the last block
913 on the disk is bad. Also, turn off the SIGALRM signal
914 while restoring blocks after the user types ^C. The
915 num_saved variable is now static so that it won't get
916 clobbered by a longjmp. buf_used and bb_count are no
917 longer static, since they aren't used by the cleanup
918 routines anymore.
919
920 * badblocks.c (main): Removed an unsued varaible (buf_size).
921 Fixed bad getopt argument that didn't allow the 'b' option
922 to take an argument. Added error checking when parsing
923 the starting block number. Fixed lint warning in fscanf
924 format string.
925
Theodore Ts'o35964b52000-07-06 13:19:43 +00009262000-07-06 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
927
Theodore Ts'o19c68912000-07-07 03:25:13 +0000928 * fsck.c (execute, wait_one): Treat fsck.ext3 the same as
929 fsck.ext2 (because they are the same) for the purposes of
930 the progress bar display logic.
931
Theodore Ts'o45d9e2f2000-07-07 03:12:54 +0000932 * tune2fs.8.in: Update manual page to document what happens if
933 max_mount_count is negative.
934
935 * tune2fs.c (main): Allow setting the maximal count value to be
936 negative, since the kernel interprets that as forcing a
937 check.
938
Theodore Ts'o5b1519b2000-07-06 14:16:08 +0000939 * fsck.c (lookup, load_fs_info, check_all): Use lazy evaluation
940 for calling interpret_device(), since this requires root
941 privileges if the partitions need to be scanned.
942 Otherwise, it's not possible to do non-proot fsck's for
943 removeable devices such as floppies if there are any
944 LABEL= or UUID= entries in /etc/fstab.
945
Theodore Ts'o981dc562000-07-06 14:13:29 +0000946 * badblocks.c (check_mount, main): Check to see if the filesystem
947 is mounted before doing a read/write or non-destructive
948 test. This can be overriden using the new -f option.
949
Theodore Ts'o35964b52000-07-06 13:19:43 +0000950 * badblocks.8.in: Update manual page to reflect that the
951 blocks-count parameter is now optional. Also properly
Theodore Ts'o981dc562000-07-06 14:13:29 +0000952 document the start-block parameter. Added documentation
953 for the -f option.
Theodore Ts'o35964b52000-07-06 13:19:43 +0000954
955 * badblocks.c (main): Allow the blocks-count parameter to be
956 optional. If it's not specified, use the size of the
957 device as a default.
958
Theodore Ts'od49a22b2000-07-06 00:31:27 +00009592000-07-05 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
960
961 * badblocks.c (test_nd): Significantly simplify the logic so that
962 it's more obviously what's going on. Fixed a few
963 potential cases which weren't handled correctly in the
964 old, overly complicated logic.
965 (flush_bufs): Now doesn't take a second argument, and
966 always forces a sync; this is required before it's really
967 safe to call BLKFLSBUF, at least for some kernels.
968
Theodore Ts'o26ab5312000-05-29 15:05:42 +00009692000-05-29 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
970
971 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Add a much more specific error message if the
972 filesystem size is defaulted and get_device_size returns a
973 size of zero. Otherwise, users get a confusing "invalid
974 argument while passed to ext2 library" error message.
975
Theodore Ts'o4ea0a112000-05-08 13:33:17 +00009762000-05-08 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
977
Theodore Ts'oc96e5112000-05-08 14:47:15 +0000978 * fsck.c (interpret_device): Add better error messages if a UUID=
979 or LABEL= specification is given.
980
Theodore Ts'o4ea0a112000-05-08 13:33:17 +0000981 * mke2fs.c (main): We forcibly turn off the filetype feature if
982 the OS is the hurd, since the hurd doesn't support it.
983 (And since the hurd allows the transmogrification of files
984 to special files and vice versa --- for no good reason
985 that I can understand --- it can't support the filetype
986 feature for the forseeable future, either.)
987
988 * mke2fs.c (proceed_question): Fix reversed sense of
989 proceed_question that was busted due to the
990 internationalization patch. Fixed bug where if
991 proceed_question was called twice, the input buffer wasn't
992 cleared of the previous question's newline.
993
Theodore Ts'oe2207ce2000-04-06 21:51:18 +0000994Thu Apr 6 17:50:25 2000 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@signal.thunk.org>
995
996 * badblocks.c (flush_bufs): Use fsync() if the system doesn't
997 support fdatasync().
998
Theodore Ts'offe4cab2000-04-03 13:27:41 +00009992000-04-03 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>

1002 uuidgen.c: For platforms that don't define optarg.h,
1003 manually define optarg and optind.
1004
Theodore Ts'o4d003982000-04-03 16:01:11 +00001005 * badblocks.8.in: Updated manual page with suggestions from David
1006 Beattie.
1007
1008 * badblocks.c (test_nd): Generalized cleanup and bug-fixes. We
1009 now explicitly clear out the signal handlers to prevent a
1010 longjmp to a deactivated stack frame.
1011 (test_rw): Fixed a signed vs. unsigned comparison error.
1012

1076
1077 * badblocks.c: Folded in patches David Beattie <dbeattie@usa.net>.
1078 Need to do cleanup before release: use of GCC extensions
1079 (dynamic arrays); unclean coding tricks (use of || instead
1080 of if statements, etc.). Comments from David Beattie:
1081
1082 "I added non-destructive write-testing, and quite a few
1083 other features. The non-destructive write testing,
1084 triggered by new "-n" command-line option, will write test
1085 patterns to the disk, but only after reading data off the
1086 disk into memory. Then, comparing the test patterns gives
1087 a result as to whether or not those sectors are reliable.
1088 Finally, the original data is written back.
1089
1090 To streamline this operation, I added another option, "-c
1091 blocks_at_once", which will give the number of disk blocks
1092 to process at one time (mnemonic--"count"). I made this
1093 default to 16 (as in the read-only testing mode), and also
1094 affect the read-only testing mode. Of course, read-only
1095 mode needs (count * block_size) amount of memory, and
1096 non-destructive read-write needs 3 times that much, so it
1097 makes sense to do the calculations and not overrun
1098 available RAM...I would have liked to implement and
1099 auto-memory-usage heuristic, but I have no idea if it's
1100 even possible to determine the amount of free memory on a
1101 Unix system except by reading /proc entries, and that
1102 didn't seem portable. I did NOT make this blocks_at_once
1103 affect the behavior of the test_rw routine, as it is
1104 processing the whole disk at once, anyway.
1105
1106 I *think* that I got higher detection rates on my hard
1107 drive using random test data than patterned test data, so
1108 my non-destructive mode initializes its test data buffer
1109 randomly.
1110
1111 I fixed a typo in flush_bufs that caused the ioctl
1112 BLKFLSBUF to never get compiled into the program.
1113
1114 Also, I added an "undocumented" (I didn't put it into the
1115 usage message; you can if you think it's useful) "-h"
1116 option to specify the host device to flush--useful if you
1117 want to test out my "non-destructive" code on something
1118 other than a hard drive, such as a file on a hard drive,
1119 and want the host hard drive to flush.
1120
1121 I provided support for an "input" file (via option "-i",
1122 similar to the "-o" option)...containing a list of
1123 already-known bad blocks; it will skip testing those
1124 blocks, thus adding speed to the bad block scan (on my
1125 computer, hitting a physically bad block causes a
1126 half-second-or-more freeze as the kernel waits for the
1127 hard drive to give up and reset itself; pretty annoying
1128 when you already know the block is bad from a previous
1129 scan).
1130
1131 Finally, the real killer, the persistent re-scan (option:
1132 "-p num_passes") that I created will, if desired,
1133 persistently re-scan the drive until it has completed a
1134 user-decidable number of passes in a row during which no
1135 new bad blocks are found. On my drive, I would see
1136 behavior that a certain percentage of bad blocks would be
1137 found with each pass (it was not reliable in the defective
1138 areas!), so I wanted it to check it over and over again
1139 until it didn't find any more, several times. Perhaps
1140 this will be useful to others. Defaults of course to
1141 zero, meaning it will stop after the first pass. I used
1142 "-p 2" on my drive, and it ran for 2 1/2 days...then used
1143 "-p 3" a couple days later and it ran for a few more
1144 hours, and since then the rest of my drive has been
1145 completely reliable.
1146
1147 Implementation of these last two features, "-i" and "-p",
1148 I did using a bb_list from libext2fs. I debated whether
1149 bad blocks input through "-i" should be output into the
1150 "-o" file (or stdout, of course), and decided against it,
1151 but left the code to do so in place, commented out, just
1152 for your information.
1153
1154 In order to maintain data integrity upon interruption of a
1155 non-destructive-write test, I created a signal handler
1156 which I install which will write back whatever original
1157 disk data is in the buffers upon any of the fatal signals
1158 (except SIGKILL, of course).
1159
1160 Of course, ideally, the new options would be reflected in
1161 the badblocks manual page, but I am not experienced at
1162 manual page modification; if you decide my patch to
1163 badblocks should be incorporated into the distribution, I
1164 could learn how to update the manpage and other
1165 documentation, or you could do it for me after exercising
1166 your opinions, if you have any, on exactly what the
1167 command-line parameters should be called and which ones
1168 should be in the distribution."

1770 and fix sent by Charles Howes, chowes@eznet.ca)
1771
1772Fri Aug 9 11:52:42 1996 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1773
1774 * tune2fs.8.in:
1775 * tune2fs.c: Added support for the -L option which sets the volume
1776 label, the -M option which sets the last mounted
1777 directory, and the -U option which sets the filesystem UUID.
1778
1779 * mke2fs.8.in:
1780 * mke2fs.c: Added support for the -o option, which overrides the
1781 creator OS. Generate a UUID for the filesystem, if
1782 applicable. Added support for the -L option which sets
1783 the volume label, and the -M option which sets the last
1784 mounted directory.
1785
1786Sat Jun 22 17:43:17 1996 Remy Card <card@bbj.linux.eu.org>
1787
1788 * chattr.c (decode_arg): Integrated Michael Nonweiler's fix to
1789 avoid a segmentation fault when the "-v" option is used
1790 and no version number is specified.
1791
Theodore Ts'o62c06f71997-04-29 14:34:47 +00001792Thu May 16 11:12:30 1996 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1793
1794 * Release of E2fsprogs version 1.04
1795
1796Wed May 15 21:15:43 1996 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1797
1798 * Makefile.in (fsck): fsck doesn't need to be linked with the ext2
1799 libraries.
1800
Theodore Ts'o7f88b041997-04-26 14:48:50 +00001801Wed Mar 27 00:33:40 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1802
1803 * Release of E2fsprogs version 1.03
1804
1805Thu Mar 7 03:43:20 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1806
1807 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Add (for development only) support to
1808 specify revision and inode size of the new filesystem.
1809
1810Tue Mar 5 03:51:35 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1811
1812 * mke2fs.8.in: Fix a few minor typo's in the man page.
1813
1814 * mke2fs.c (reserve_inodes): Add support for dynamic first inode
1815 revision.
1816
1817Mon Feb 5 22:19:49 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1818
1819 * fsck.c (check_all, PRS): Added new flag -P, which turns on the
1820 parallel root option. This allows you to check the root
1821 filesystem in parallel with the other filesystems. Note
1822 that this is not the safest thing in the world to do,
1823 since if the root filesystem is in doubt things like
1824 the e2fsck executable might be corrupted! But some
1825 sysadmins, who don't want to repartition the root
1826 filesystem to be small and compact, may really want this
1827 option turned on.
1828
Theodore Ts'o74becf31997-04-26 14:37:06 +00001829Wed Jan 31 11:06:08 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1830
1831 * Release of E2fsprogs version 1.02
1832
1833Tue Oct 30 21:14:12 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1834
1835 * mke2fs.c (check_plausibility): Add check to warn user if they
1836 are trying to mke2fs the whole disk. (/dev/hda
1837 vs. /dev/hda1)
1838
1839Fri Dec 15 19:09:56 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1840
1841 * fsck.c (check_all): If we break out of the loop because we are
1842 serializing and have just started at fsck we haven't
1843 finished the pass. We need to go round again in case there
1844 are more filesystems to be done in this pass. (Patch
1845 submitted by Mike Jagdis)
1846
1847Sat Dec 9 10:07:16 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1848
1849 * dumpe2fs.c (in_use): test_bit() was renamed to
1850 ext2fs_test_bit().
1851
Theodore Ts'o297f47a1997-04-26 14:25:20 +00001852Mon Oct 30 20:21:18 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1853
1854 * fsck.c (fsck_device): Check fstype instead of type; this was a
1855 stupid typo which caused coredumps in some cases.
1856
Theodore Ts'oa418d3a1997-04-26 14:00:26 +00001857Thu Oct 26 12:05:18 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1858
1859 * Makefile.in (install): Strip programs when they are installed.
1860
1861Fri Aug 18 15:10:40 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@dcl>
1862
1863 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Move call of check_mount() from main() to PRS(),
1864 so we do the check to see if the filesystem is mounted
1865 *before* we try to determine the size of the device.
1866
1867Wed Sep 6 23:34:07 1995 Remy Card <card@bbj>
1868
1869 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): Load the informations from /etc/fstab in
1870 the same order.
1871
1872Thu Aug 17 22:33:09 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1873
1874 * mke2fs.c (check_mount): Use the new ext2fs_check_if_mounted()
1875 function to determine if the device is mounted.
1876
1877 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Change call to use the new
1878 ext2fs_get_device_size() function in order to determine
1879 the size of the filesystem. Remove get_size() and
1880 is_valid_offset(), which are no longer called.
1881
1882Fri Aug 11 08:26:24 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@lurch.mit.edu>
1883
1884 * fsck.c (fsck_device): Make sure fstype has been set by the user
1885 and that it does not begin with "no" and the user has
1886 specified exactly one type before using it as the type to
1887 check.
1888
1889Fri Aug 11 14:17:18 1995 Remy Card <card@bbj>
1890
1891 * badblocks.8:
1892 * chattr.1:
1893 * dumpe2fs.8:
1894 * fsck.8:
1895 * lsattr.1:
1896 * mke2fs.8:
1897 * mklost+found.8:
1898 * tune2fs.8: Updated date and version number.
1899
1900Thu Aug 10 14:18:36 1995 Remy Card <card@bbj>
1901
1902 * tune2fs.c: Fixed a bug which prevented the use of user and group
1903 names with the -g and -u options. Thanks to Jean Christophe
1904 ANDRE <progfou@mycrob.cafard.freenix.fr>.
1905
1906 * mke2fs.8:
1907 * tune2fs.8: Fixed a spelling error in Ted's name :-)
1908
1909Wed Aug 9 20:41:54 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@dcl>
1910
1911 * mke2fs.c (count_blocks): Divide the size by
1912 EXT2_BLOCK_SIZE(&param), instead of assuming that the
1913 blocksize is always 1024 bytes.
1914
1915Sat Aug 5 12:00:51 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@lurch.mit.edu>
1916
1917 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Use malloc() instead of alloca() --- alloca() is
1918 not portable!! In any case putenv() in some systems must
1919 take a static character array or malloc()'ed memory;
1920 passing memory allocated using alloca() to putenv() is not
1921 advisable.
1922
1923 * chattr.c (chattr_dir_proc):
1924 * lsattr.c (lsattr_dir_proc): Use malloc() instead of alloca() ---
1925 alloca is not portable!
1926
1927 * fsck.c (fsck_device): If the filesystem type is specified by the
1928 user using the -t option, let it override the type in
1929 /etc/fstab.
1930
1931 * fsck.c (strdup): Don't build strdup() if the system defines it.
1932
1933Mon Jun 12 19:15:10 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o (tytso@dcl)
1934
1935 * chattr.c, lsattr.c: Include <sys/types.h> for <dirent.h>'s
1936 benefit.
1937
1938 * The $(UPROGS) go in bin, not sbin.
1939
1940 * badblocks.c, chattr.c, dumpe2fs.c, fsck.c, lsattr.c, mke2fs.c,
1941 tune2fs.c: Don't include <getopt.h> if it doesn't exist.
1942
1943Mon Jun 12 16:36:04 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@dcl>
1944
1945 * badblocks.c, chattr.c, dumpe2fs.c, fsck.c, lsattr.c, mke2fs.c,
1946 tune2fs.c: Only include getopt.h if HAVE_GETOPT_H is defined.
1947
1948Sat Jun 10 23:37:09 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@lurch.mit.edu>
1949
1950 * chattr.c: Include errno.h, since we use errno
1951
1952 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): If HAVE_MNTENT_H is not defined,
1953 explicitly initialize filesys_info to be NULL.
1954
1955 * mke2fs.c: Include the stdio.h and errno.h header files
1956
1957Thu Jun 8 13:25:23 1995 Miles Bader <miles@churchy.gnu.ai.mit.edu>
1958
1959 * mke2fs.c: Only include <linux/fs.h> if we can.
1960 (get_size): Don't try to use the BLKGETSIZE ioctl unless it's defined.
1961 (check_mount): Only check to see if the device is mounted if
1962 HAVE_MNTENT_H is defined (by configure).
1963
1964 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): Only try to get info about filesystems if
1965 HAVE_MNTENT_H is defined (by configure).
1966 (main): Allocate space for a new fsck_path instead of append to a
1967 statically sized buffer.
1968 (PRS): Use alloca to allocate the new path string, instead of
1969 having a fixed size buffer (which was the wrong size anyway).
1970
1971 * chattr.c (chattr_dir_proc): Use alloca to allocate space for a
1972 filename instead of using a fixed-size buffer.
1973 * lsattr.c (lsattr_dir_proc): Ditto.
1974 * mklost+fond.c (main): Calculate the actual needed size for the
1975 path buffer instead of using MAXPATHLEN (which not all systems have).
1976
1977 * badblocks.c: Only include linux include files if we have them.
1978 (flush_bufs): New function to flush a block device, optionally
1979 syncing it first. This replaces other copies of this code.
1980 (test_ro): Replace calls to ioctl with flush_bufs().
1981 (test_rw): Ditto.
1982
1983 * Makefile.in: Rewritten to conform to GNU coding standards and
1984 support separate compilation directories.
1985
Theodore Ts'of3db3561997-04-26 13:34:30 +00001986Sat Mar 11 10:59:58 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@localhost>
1987
1988 * mke2fs.c (main, zap_bootblock): Added new function
1989 zap_bootblock() which clears the first 512 bytes of the
1990 filesystem. This protects the filesystem from being
1991 misidentified as a MS-DOS FAT filesystem.
1992
1993 * badblocks.c (alarm_intr, test_ro, test_rw): Increase the space
1994 allocated for printing the block numbers, so that the
1995 display doesn't get corrupted when running badblocks on a
1996 very large partition.
1997
1998 * badblocks.c (do_test, test_ro, test_rw): Added missing cast to
1999 ext2_loff_t, so that when checking a large device,
2000 spurious seek errors aren't reported.
2001
2002 * mke2fs.c (count_blocks): Declare mid to be of type ext2_loff_t
2003 instead of type int, so that it works for filesystems
2004 greater than 2 GB. (Fortunately count_blocks is only
2005 called if the device does not support the BLKGETSIZE
2006 ioctl, which most do.)
2007
2008 * fsck.c (ignore): Add check to ignore filesystems with a pass
2009 number of zero. (This check was accidentally deleted at
2010 during 0.5b development.)
2011
2012Sat Dec 31 00:47:16 1994 <tytso@rsx-11.mit.edu>
2013
2014 * mke2fs.c (new_table_block, alloc_tables, PRS, main): Add a new
2015 option, -S, which only writes the superblock and group
2016 descriptors. Useful for recovering when all of the
2017 superblocks are corrupted somehow (as a last ditch
2018 measure).
2019
2020 Also, don't bother initializing the bitmap blocks in
2021 alloc_tables(), since they will be overwritten at the end
2022 anyway. (Should speed up mke2fs by a little.)
2023
2024Tue Dec 6 02:20:55 1994 <tytso@rsx-11.mit.edu>
2025
2026 * fsck.c (main): Fix stupid typo where a null inst would be freed.
2027
2028 * fsck.c (wait_one): Check WIFEXITED on status before trying to
2029 extract the exit status. In other cases, return
2030 FSCK_ERROR if the back end processor exited with a signal.
2031
2032Tue Nov 15 10:20:00 1994 Remy Card <card@bbj>
2033
2034 * tune2fs.c (main): Fixed a bug which prevented the use of the
2035 new options.
2036 Added the `w' (week) suffix recognition in the check interval.
2037
2038Sun Nov 13 15:58:48 1994 (tytso@rsx-11)
2039
2040 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): If the user has an obviously old
2041 /etc/fstab file, issue a warning message and assume that
2042 all partitions should be checked.
2043
2044Sat Nov 12 00:33:18 1994 (tytso@rsx-11)
2045
2046 * dumpe2fs.c (list_desc): Update to new inode and block bitmap
2047 structures.
2048
2049 * mke2fs.c (create_root_dir): Create the root directory owned by
2050 the effective uid.
2051
2052Mon Nov 7 22:04:37 1994 Remy Card <card@bbj>
2053
2054 * tune2fs.c (main.c): Added support for new options:
2055 -r reserved_blocks_count, -g reserved_gid, -u reserved_uid.
2056
2057Sun Aug 21 00:57:33 1994 Theodore Y. Ts'o (tytso@rt-11)
2058
2059 * fsck.c (ignore): If the pass number is 0, ignore the filesystem.
2060
2061Wed Aug 17 21:55:03 1994 Remy Card (card@bbj)
2062
2063 * badblocks.c (test_rw): Added verbose output like in the
2064 read-only test.
2065
2066 (do_test and test_rw): Use the llseek system call if available.
2067
2068 * chattr.c: Added support for new attributes.
2069
2070 * lsattr.c: Added support for long format.
2071
2072 * mke2fs.c (usage): Fixed bogus usage message.
2073
2074 (valid_offset): Use the llseek system call if available.
2075
2076Wed Aug 17 10:50:57 1994 Theodore Y. Ts'o (tytso@rt-11)
2077
2078 * mke2fs.c (handle_bad_blocks): Check to see if a bad block is
2079 where a backup superblock/group descriptor is stored. If so,
2080 print a warning message and adjust the superblock counts so that
2081 they are correct. (Otherwise, the bad block will get counted
2082 twice and the # of free blocks count will be wrong.)
2083
2084 (alloc_tables): Removed code which calcualated the free block
2085 statistics, which was moved to lib/ext2fs/initialize.c. This
2086 allows the bad block code to adjust the group descriptor
2087 statistics if necessary.
