14
15 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Clear the buffer *after* testing for the
16 BSD sector label. Otherwise the first 512 bytes don't get
17 zapped. (Addresses Debian bug #147256.)

20
21 * mke2fs.8.in: Cleaned up man page, and made it a bit more
22 OS-agnostic. Addresses Debian bug #144621. Hope this
23 makes the Hurd whiners happy. :-)

36 one inode per block for large blocksizes.
37
Theodore Ts'o31e29a12002-05-17 10:53:07 -0400382002-05-17 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
39
40 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Determine the page size using sysconf() at
41 runtime, instead of using the Linux system header files.
42
432002-05-16 Andreas Dilger <adilger@clusterfs.com>
44
45 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Allow blocksizes larger than 4k to be specified,
46 with warning printed and the user questioned if blocksize
47 is larger than the system's page size according to the
48 Linux kernel header files. Added better checking for
49 valid inode sizes, and again print a warning message if
50 using a large inode size (since most kernels today don't
51 support this yet).

Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001342002-01-02 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o5493a272002-01-02 14:15:35 -0500135
136 * badblocks.c (main): Open the device as O_RDWR if possible, since
137 fsync() isn't guaranteed to work if the filesystem is
138 opened read-only.
139
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001402001-12-26 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>

142 * tune2fs.8.in, tune2fs.c (parse_tune2fs_options, main): Add
143 support for new option, -T, which allows the user to set
144 the last checked time on the filesystem.
145

Theodore Ts'o3ed57c22001-12-24 15:01:59 -0500148 * mke2fs.c (main, test_disk): If two -c options are
149 specified, then perform a destructive read/write test
150 of the disk.
151
152 * mke2fs.8.in: Document the double -c option; also encourage users
153 to use -c instead of the -l/-L options since it's too hard
154 for users to get things like the blocksize parameter correct.
155
156 * badblocks.8.in: Encourage users to use the -c option in mke2fs
157 and e2fsck instead of running badblocks directly.
158
Theodore Ts'o6a525062001-12-24 09:40:00 -0500159 * mke2fs.c (create_lost_and_found): The lost+found directory is
160 now created with 0700 permissions, since files which get
161 dropped into that directory may have come from a protected
162 directory, and the system administrator may not deal with
163 immediately. (Addresses Debian bug #118443)

Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001652001-12-23 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o19007e52001-12-23 19:33:51 -0500166
167 * Makefile.in, jfs_user.h: Move linux/jbd.h to
168 ext2fs/kernel-jbd.h, to avoid using the system header
169 file version of hbd.h when using diet glibc (since it
170 forcibly adds /usr/include to the beginning of the
171 include search path.)
172
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001732001-12-22 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'oeaf4dc52001-12-22 00:04:22 -0500174
175 * get_device_by_label.c (init_lvm): Add support to read out
176 information from the LVM proc hierarchy, so that the UUID
177 cache can search the LVM logical volumes for UUID's,
178 labels, etc.
179
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001802001-12-21 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o0655b102001-12-21 23:59:46 -0500181
182 * dumpe2fs.c (list_bad_blocks): Change to not die if the listing
183 of the bad blocks can't be found. Slimmed down dumpe2fs
184 by eliminating duplicate code paths.
185

189 get_device_by_label.c (get_label_uuid),
190 mke2fs.c (set_fs_defaults, zap_sector, PRS),
191 tune2fs.c (remove_journal_device, update_feature_set),
192 util.c (figure_journal_size), util.h: Fix gcc -Wall nits.
193
194 * e2image.c (write_raw_image_file): Fix gcc -Wall nits, and use
195 the stashed inode functions to optimize away system calls.
196
Theodore Ts'o8cf93332001-12-16 02:23:36 -0500197 * Makefile.in, jfs_user.h: linux/jfs.h has been renamed to
198 linux/jbd.h
199

202 * dumpe2fs.c: Don't print the offset to the bitmap and inode table
203 if it's negative. Also did some generalized code clean up
204 to slim it down the support of the -x option.
205
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002062001-11-24 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>

Theodore Ts'ob3f5b4c2001-11-05 19:22:02 -0500218 * chattr.1.in: Update the man page to document the EXT2_NOTAIL_FL
219 flag.
220
221 * chattr.c: Add support for the EXT2_NOTAIL_FL flag.
222
Theodore Ts'o6430bd62001-11-05 18:58:46 -0500223 * fsck.c (interpret_type): If the "auto" type is specified, make
224 sure interpet_device() is called so that device
225 specifications which use LABEL= or UUID= are translated
226 into a real device name.
227
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002282001-10-12 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>

247 in use.
248
Theodore Ts'o39567c42001-09-19 15:28:21 -0400249 * tune2fs.8.in: Update man page to reflect the fact that adding or
250 removing a journal doesn't require running e2fsck.
251

270
271 * badblocks.8.in: Fix spelling typo. (Addresses Debian bug #110621)
272
Theodore Ts'o04a96852001-08-30 21:55:26 -0400273 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Now takes a third argument, which is how
274 many sectors to clear out. Fixed up Andreas's patch to
275 make it a bit more efficient/compact.
276
Andreas Dilger59f27242001-08-30 15:39:04 -06002772001-08-30 Andreas Dilger <adilger@turbolinux.com>
278
279 * mke2fs.c (main): Zap the second sector of the disk, along with
280 any sectors in the same filesystem block after the superblock.
281 The latter will remove (for example) swapspace signatures
282 on 4kB+ blocksize filesystems. Also when zeroing the "end"
283 of the filesystem don't actually zero the start of a very
284 small device (less than 64 blocks).
285
Theodore Ts'o0f8973f2001-08-27 12:44:23 -04002862001-08-27 Theodore Tso <tytso@valinux.com>
287
Andreas Dilger59f27242001-08-30 15:39:04 -0600288 * fsck.c (main): Make version display consistent with the other
Theodore Ts'o0f8973f2001-08-27 12:44:23 -0400289 e2fsprogs programs.
290
291 * lsattr.c, chattr.c, mke2fs.c, tune2fs.c, dumpe2fs.c, e2image.c,
292 mklost+found.c: Remove EXT2FS_VERSION from the version
293 display, since it only confuses people.
294
Theodore Ts'oe843c762001-08-18 14:22:25 -04002952001-08-18 Theodore Tso <tytso@valinux.com>
296
297 * tune2fs.c (remove_journal_device): Remove unused variable
298 check_uuid.
299
300 * get_device_by_label.h: Define function prototype for
301 copy_string(), since this was moved from fsck.c to
302 get_device_by_label.c by Andreas's BK changeset.
303
Andreas Dilger2d155762001-08-17 03:48:11 -06003042001-08-17 Andreas Dilger <adilger@turbolinux.com>
305
306 * get_device_by_label.[ch], fsck.c, util.c: New interpret_spec()
307 function in get_device_by_label.c to allow the use of
308 UUID= or LABEL= when creating filesystems which use external
309 journal dev (e.g. mke2fs -J device=LABEL=<journal_label>).
310
311 * tune2fs.c: Use superblock s_journal_uuid to locate an external
312 journal device instead of s_journal_dev when removing it.
313 Allow opening journal devices to set the label and UUID
314 in the ext2 superblock.
315
316 * mke2fs.c, tune2fs.c: Free journal_device after use, as it is
317 malloc'd in interpret spec.
318

324
Theodore Ts'o7141b542001-08-15 19:17:37 -0400325 * tune2fs.c: Make sure that error messages are sent to stderr, and
326 normal messages are sent to stdout. (Addresses Debian bug
327 #108555.)
328
Theodore Ts'o1d349cc2001-08-15 19:06:55 -0400329 * fsck.8.in: Fixed error in synopsis of the man page.

660
661 * tune2fs.c: Changed the external journal code so that it simply
662 adds a filesystem to a journal; the journal must have bene
663 created via "mke2fs -O journal_dev /dev/XXX".
664
665 * mke2fs.c: Add support for creating an external journal device by
666 using the command "mke2fs -O journal_dev /dev/XXX". Also
667 changed the external journal code so -j device=/dev/XXX it
668 simply adds a filesystem to that journal; the journal must
669 have been created via separate step.
670
671 * dumpe2fs.c (print_journal_information): Add support for dumping
672 information about an external journal device.
673

675
Theodore Ts'o44c09c02001-01-14 17:02:09 +0000676 * mke2fs.c: Add new filesystem types, largefile and largefile4,
677 for those filesystems whose average inode size is 1MB and
678 4MB, respectively. Allow the inode ratio specified to be
679 has high as 4MB. Make the s_max_mount_count vary between
680 20 and 40, to avoid needing to check all of the
681 filesystems at the same time. Add some random jitter to
682 the s_max_mount_count value so that we avoid checking all
683 of the filesystems at the same time when we reboot.
684
Theodore Ts'o08dd8302001-01-14 16:25:58 +0000685 * tune2fs.8.in: Add description of the -j option.
686
Theodore Ts'o4055ef72001-01-14 16:11:14 +0000687 * tune2fs.c (add_journal): Minor fixes from Andreas Dilger. Flush
688 stdout after printing in-progress message.
689 (main): Exit with status code 1 if we failed to determine
690 the mount status of the device.

693
Theodore Ts'oc8c071a2001-01-11 16:08:23 +0000694 * e2image.c, mke2fs.c, mklost+found.c, tune2fs.c, util.c,
695 uuidgen.c: Fix gcc -Wall complaints, including one bug in
696 tune2fs caused by a block automatic shadowing version of
697 the variable we really wanted to use, which broke the
698 logic testing to see if the filesystem was mounted.
699
Theodore Ts'o4d404542001-01-11 16:04:59 +0000700 * badblocks.c (flush_bufs): Use ext2fs_sync_device() to sync and
701 flush the device.
702
Theodore Ts'odfcdc322001-01-11 15:38:00 +0000703 * mke2fs.c: Change ino_t to ext2_ino_t.

706
707 * Makefile.in, tune2fs.c: Move e2label functionality into tune2fs,
708 using argv[0] as a dispatch. This allows e2label to be
709 (more) safely used on mounted filesystems.
710

712
713 * get_device_by_label.h (get_volume_label_by_spec): Add function
714 prototype.
715
716 * get_device_by_label.c: Use string_copy() instead of strdup() for
717 portability's sake. Fix a few other gcc -Wall
718 complaints.
719
720 * fsck.c (string_copy): Export string_copy() extern.
721
722 * badblocks.c: Fix various gcc -Wall complaints, including
723 an incorrect reference to sync in flush_bufs().
724

726
727 * tune2fs.c (update_feature_set, add_journal): Moved to separate
728 functions. Added ability to add and remove the journal
729 while the filesystem is live. Added support for setting
730 a time-based UUID. Removed zero-initialized static variables.
731
732 * mke2fs.c, util.c, util.h (strcasecmp, proceed_question,
733 check_plausibility, parse_journal_opts, check_mount):
734 Moved functions to util.c so they can be used by tune2fs.
735
736 * mke2fs.c (main): Change ext2fs_add_journal_fs() to
737 ext2fs_add_journal_inode() to reflect function renaming.

Theodore Ts'oef9abe52001-01-01 15:31:53 +0000741 * mke2fs.c, e2image.c: Removed references to struct ext2fs_sb to
742 struct ext2_super_block.
743
Theodore Ts'ob21e38a2001-01-01 15:26:58 +0000744 * tune2fs.c (main): Add support to allow HAS_JOURNAL flag to be
745 cleared, but only if the filesystem is unmounted or
746 mounted read-only. Changed struct ext2fs_sb to struct
Theodore Ts'oef9abe52001-01-01 15:31:53 +0000747 ext2_super_block, and cleaned up old code which was needed
748 for old versions of ext2_fs.h (not needed since we're

Theodore Ts'od4cf2fc2000-12-31 14:09:38 +0000753 * fsck.c (check_all): Call interpet_device to resolve LABEL= and
754 UUID= right away so that the device_already_active() logic
755 can do the right thing. Also cleaned up the the root
756 filesystem logic checking code; fixed up a logic bug with
757 the parallel_root option.
758
Theodore Ts'of10748d2000-12-31 13:55:14 +0000759 * lsattr.1.in: Add pointer to chattr man page for definition of
760 the file attributes.
761
762 * lsattr.c (list_attributes): Minor cleanup to smooth out logic
763 flow. Also removed static initialized variables to zero.
764
Theodore Ts'o9a718842000-12-31 13:48:12 +0000765 * chattr.c (decode_arg, get_flag): Use a table-driven method for

767 support for the journaled data flag.
768
769 * chattr.1.in: Document the -j/+j/=j flag.

Theodore Ts'od48755e2000-12-09 14:36:04 +0000789 * mke2fs.c (main, parse_journal_opts): Add support for creating V1
790 superblocks. We now pass in a journal_flags field to the
791 journal creation routines for this purpose.
792
793 * mke2fs.c: Remove zero initializers to save a few bytes from the
794 executable image. (Are we excited yet?)
795
Theodore Ts'o74a74d22000-12-09 14:33:29 +0000796 * findsuper.c: And non-subtle copyright licensing restriction to

804
805 * base_device.c (base_device): New version moved from fsck.c which

814 #63442)
815
Theodore Ts'oe9f9dd82000-12-02 06:35:07 +0000816 * fsck.c (wait_one): When we let a new fsck take control of the

840
Theodore Ts'of6f65832000-10-25 03:01:37 +0000841 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Applied Andreas Dilger's patch to make the -r -s
842 handling a bit more sane. (Even though -s is deprecated
843 at this point.)
844
Theodore Ts'o0056be12000-10-25 02:24:33 +0000845 * get_device_by_label.c: Apply fix from Erik Troan to support 16
846 character labels.
847
Theodore Ts'o43819662000-10-25 02:06:09 +0000848 * fsck.c (device_already_active): Add a special case check for MD
849 devices, so we don't try to check them in parallel with
850 other devices.
851
Theodore Ts'o85ef4ae2000-10-24 19:33:45 +0000852 * mke2fs.c (PRS, main), mke2fs.8.in: Add support for the -j
853 option, which builds an ext2/3 filesystem with an ext3
854 journal.
855
Theodore Ts'oe294cf22000-10-24 18:41:44 +00008562000-10-24 <tytso@valinux.com>

867
868 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Fix error message printed when zap_sector
869 fails.
870
871 * dumpe2fs.c (list_desc): Fixed format string bug when printing
872 the inode table location in non-hex format.
873
Theodore Ts'o556ccbd2000-08-20 19:11:05 +00008742000-08-20 <tytso@valinux.com>
875
876 * get_device_by_label.c: Add call to ext2fs_find_block_device if
877 we can't find the device using the name given by
878 /proc/partitions. (This can happen if devfs is compiled
879 into the kernel, but not mounted.)

Theodore Ts'o80c22c92000-08-14 15:32:11 +00008812000-06-27 Andreas Dilger <adilger@turbolabs.com>
882
883 * dumpe2fs.c (usage): add fhx options to usage message, add -x option
884 to print out the per-group block numbers in hex, add line for
885 location of primary/backup superblock and group descriptors
886
887 * mke2fs.c: rename max to group_blk_max avoid potential macro conflict
888
Theodore Ts'oe41784e2000-08-14 14:44:15 +00008892000-08-14 <tytso@valinux.com>
890
891 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Change zap_bootsect to more general
892 zap_sect.
893 (main): Clear the superblock when starting mke2fs, to
894 avoid leaving the filesystem in an inconsistent state.
895
Theodore Ts'o28412de2000-07-27 02:45:55 +00008962000-07-26 <tytso@valinux.com>
897
898 * get_device_by_label.c: Improve /proc/partitions parsing in
899 fsck, and speed up fsck -a.
900
Theodore Ts'of9e67062000-07-13 23:25:54 +00009012000-07-13 <tytso@valinux.com>

Theodore Ts'oa551b782000-07-13 22:05:31 +00009052000-07-13 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
906
907 * badblocks.8.in: Added text explaining that the -n and -w options
908 are mutually exclusive.
909
910 * badblocks.c (usage): Fix usage message to make it clear that the
911 block count must be specified if the starting block is to
912 be specified. (The starting block should be a option, in
913 the long run.)
914
915 * badblocks.c (test_nd): Save and restore the currently_testing
916 variable before going into the write verification loop.
917 This avoids a loop termination problem if the last block
918 on the disk is bad. Also, turn off the SIGALRM signal
919 while restoring blocks after the user types ^C. The
920 num_saved variable is now static so that it won't get
921 clobbered by a longjmp. buf_used and bb_count are no
922 longer static, since they aren't used by the cleanup
923 routines anymore.
924
925 * badblocks.c (main): Removed an unsued varaible (buf_size).
926 Fixed bad getopt argument that didn't allow the 'b' option
927 to take an argument. Added error checking when parsing
928 the starting block number. Fixed lint warning in fscanf
929 format string.
930
Theodore Ts'o35964b52000-07-06 13:19:43 +00009312000-07-06 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
932
Theodore Ts'o19c68912000-07-07 03:25:13 +0000933 * fsck.c (execute, wait_one): Treat fsck.ext3 the same as
934 fsck.ext2 (because they are the same) for the purposes of
935 the progress bar display logic.
936
Theodore Ts'o45d9e2f2000-07-07 03:12:54 +0000937 * tune2fs.8.in: Update manual page to document what happens if
938 max_mount_count is negative.
939
940 * tune2fs.c (main): Allow setting the maximal count value to be
941 negative, since the kernel interprets that as forcing a
942 check.
943
Theodore Ts'o5b1519b2000-07-06 14:16:08 +0000944 * fsck.c (lookup, load_fs_info, check_all): Use lazy evaluation
945 for calling interpret_device(), since this requires root
946 privileges if the partitions need to be scanned.
947 Otherwise, it's not possible to do non-proot fsck's for
948 removeable devices such as floppies if there are any
949 LABEL= or UUID= entries in /etc/fstab.
950
Theodore Ts'o981dc562000-07-06 14:13:29 +0000951 * badblocks.c (check_mount, main): Check to see if the filesystem
952 is mounted before doing a read/write or non-destructive
953 test. This can be overriden using the new -f option.
954
Theodore Ts'o35964b52000-07-06 13:19:43 +0000955 * badblocks.8.in: Update manual page to reflect that the
956 blocks-count parameter is now optional. Also properly
Theodore Ts'o981dc562000-07-06 14:13:29 +0000957 document the start-block parameter. Added documentation
958 for the -f option.
Theodore Ts'o35964b52000-07-06 13:19:43 +0000959
960 * badblocks.c (main): Allow the blocks-count parameter to be
961 optional. If it's not specified, use the size of the
962 device as a default.
963
Theodore Ts'od49a22b2000-07-06 00:31:27 +00009642000-07-05 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
965
966 * badblocks.c (test_nd): Significantly simplify the logic so that
967 it's more obviously what's going on. Fixed a few
968 potential cases which weren't handled correctly in the
969 old, overly complicated logic.
970 (flush_bufs): Now doesn't take a second argument, and
971 always forces a sync; this is required before it's really
972 safe to call BLKFLSBUF, at least for some kernels.
973
Theodore Ts'o26ab5312000-05-29 15:05:42 +00009742000-05-29 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
975
976 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Add a much more specific error message if the
977 filesystem size is defaulted and get_device_size returns a
978 size of zero. Otherwise, users get a confusing "invalid
979 argument while passed to ext2 library" error message.
980
Theodore Ts'o4ea0a112000-05-08 13:33:17 +00009812000-05-08 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
982
Theodore Ts'oc96e5112000-05-08 14:47:15 +0000983 * fsck.c (interpret_device): Add better error messages if a UUID=
984 or LABEL= specification is given.
985
Theodore Ts'o4ea0a112000-05-08 13:33:17 +0000986 * mke2fs.c (main): We forcibly turn off the filetype feature if
987 the OS is the hurd, since the hurd doesn't support it.
988 (And since the hurd allows the transmogrification of files
989 to special files and vice versa --- for no good reason
990 that I can understand --- it can't support the filetype
991 feature for the forseeable future, either.)
992
993 * mke2fs.c (proceed_question): Fix reversed sense of
994 proceed_question that was busted due to the
995 internationalization patch. Fixed bug where if
996 proceed_question was called twice, the input buffer wasn't
997 cleared of the previous question's newline.

1081
1082 * badblocks.c: Folded in patches David Beattie <dbeattie@usa.net>.
1083 Need to do cleanup before release: use of GCC extensions
1084 (dynamic arrays); unclean coding tricks (use of || instead
1085 of if statements, etc.). Comments from David Beattie:
1086
1087 "I added non-destructive write-testing, and quite a few
1088 other features. The non-destructive write testing,
1089 triggered by new "-n" command-line option, will write test
1090 patterns to the disk, but only after reading data off the
1091 disk into memory. Then, comparing the test patterns gives
1092 a result as to whether or not those sectors are reliable.
1093 Finally, the original data is written back.
1094
1095 To streamline this operation, I added another option, "-c
1096 blocks_at_once", which will give the number of disk blocks
1097 to process at one time (mnemonic--"count"). I made this
1098 default to 16 (as in the read-only testing mode), and also
1099 affect the read-only testing mode. Of course, read-only
1100 mode needs (count * block_size) amount of memory, and
1101 non-destructive read-write needs 3 times that much, so it
1102 makes sense to do the calculations and not overrun
1103 available RAM...I would have liked to implement and
1104 auto-memory-usage heuristic, but I have no idea if it's
1105 even possible to determine the amount of free memory on a
1106 Unix system except by reading /proc entries, and that
1107 didn't seem portable. I did NOT make this blocks_at_once
1108 affect the behavior of the test_rw routine, as it is
1109 processing the whole disk at once, anyway.
1110
1111 I *think* that I got higher detection rates on my hard
1112 drive using random test data than patterned test data, so
1113 my non-destructive mode initializes its test data buffer
1114 randomly.
1115
1116 I fixed a typo in flush_bufs that caused the ioctl
1117 BLKFLSBUF to never get compiled into the program.
1118
1119 Also, I added an "undocumented" (I didn't put it into the
1120 usage message; you can if you think it's useful) "-h"
1121 option to specify the host device to flush--useful if you
1122 want to test out my "non-destructive" code on something
1123 other than a hard drive, such as a file on a hard drive,
1124 and want the host hard drive to flush.
1125
1126 I provided support for an "input" file (via option "-i",
1127 similar to the "-o" option)...containing a list of
1128 already-known bad blocks; it will skip testing those
1129 blocks, thus adding speed to the bad block scan (on my
1130 computer, hitting a physically bad block causes a
1131 half-second-or-more freeze as the kernel waits for the
1132 hard drive to give up and reset itself; pretty annoying
1133 when you already know the block is bad from a previous
1134 scan).
1135
1136 Finally, the real killer, the persistent re-scan (option:
1137 "-p num_passes") that I created will, if desired,
1138 persistently re-scan the drive until it has completed a
1139 user-decidable number of passes in a row during which no
1140 new bad blocks are found. On my drive, I would see
1141 behavior that a certain percentage of bad blocks would be
1142 found with each pass (it was not reliable in the defective
1143 areas!), so I wanted it to check it over and over again
1144 until it didn't find any more, several times. Perhaps
1145 this will be useful to others. Defaults of course to
1146 zero, meaning it will stop after the first pass. I used
1147 "-p 2" on my drive, and it ran for 2 1/2 days...then used
1148 "-p 3" a couple days later and it ran for a few more
1149 hours, and since then the rest of my drive has been
1150 completely reliable.
1151
1152 Implementation of these last two features, "-i" and "-p",
1153 I did using a bb_list from libext2fs. I debated whether
1154 bad blocks input through "-i" should be output into the
1155 "-o" file (or stdout, of course), and decided against it,
1156 but left the code to do so in place, commented out, just
1157 for your information.
1158
1159 In order to maintain data integrity upon interruption of a
1160 non-destructive-write test, I created a signal handler
1161 which I install which will write back whatever original
1162 disk data is in the buffers upon any of the fatal signals
1163 (except SIGKILL, of course).
1164
1165 Of course, ideally, the new options would be reflected in
1166 the badblocks manual page, but I am not experienced at
1167 manual page modification; if you decide my patch to
1168 badblocks should be incorporated into the distribution, I
1169 could learn how to update the manpage and other
1170 documentation, or you could do it for me after exercising
1171 your opinions, if you have any, on exactly what the
1172 command-line parameters should be called and which ones
1173 should be in the distribution."

1403 * mke2fs.c (write_inode_tables): Add kludge code so that when the
1404 MKE2FS_SYNC environment variable is set, mke2fs will sync

1406 the inode tables. This is to work around a VM bug in the
1407 2.0 kernel. I've heard a report that a RAID user was able
1408 to trigger it even using a 2.2 kernel.

1773
1774 * chattr.c (main): Fixed bug so that chattr -v works. (Bug report
1775 and fix sent by Charles Howes, chowes@eznet.ca)
1776
1777Fri Aug 9 11:52:42 1996 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1778
1779 * tune2fs.8.in:
1780 * tune2fs.c: Added support for the -L option which sets the volume
1781 label, the -M option which sets the last mounted
1782 directory, and the -U option which sets the filesystem UUID.
1783
1784 * mke2fs.8.in:
1785 * mke2fs.c: Added support for the -o option, which overrides the
1786 creator OS. Generate a UUID for the filesystem, if
1787 applicable. Added support for the -L option which sets
1788 the volume label, and the -M option which sets the last
1789 mounted directory.
1790
1791Sat Jun 22 17:43:17 1996 Remy Card <card@bbj.linux.eu.org>
1792
1793 * chattr.c (decode_arg): Integrated Michael Nonweiler's fix to
1794 avoid a segmentation fault when the "-v" option is used
1795 and no version number is specified.
1796
Theodore Ts'o62c06f71997-04-29 14:34:47 +00001797Thu May 16 11:12:30 1996 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1798
1799 * Release of E2fsprogs version 1.04
1800
1801Wed May 15 21:15:43 1996 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1802
1803 * Makefile.in (fsck): fsck doesn't need to be linked with the ext2
1804 libraries.
1805
Theodore Ts'o7f88b041997-04-26 14:48:50 +00001806Wed Mar 27 00:33:40 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1807
1808 * Release of E2fsprogs version 1.03
1809
1810Thu Mar 7 03:43:20 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1811
1812 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Add (for development only) support to
1813 specify revision and inode size of the new filesystem.
1814
1815Tue Mar 5 03:51:35 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1816
1817 * mke2fs.8.in: Fix a few minor typo's in the man page.
1818
1819 * mke2fs.c (reserve_inodes): Add support for dynamic first inode
1820 revision.
1821
1822Mon Feb 5 22:19:49 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1823
1824 * fsck.c (check_all, PRS): Added new flag -P, which turns on the
1825 parallel root option. This allows you to check the root
1826 filesystem in parallel with the other filesystems. Note
1827 that this is not the safest thing in the world to do,
1828 since if the root filesystem is in doubt things like
1829 the e2fsck executable might be corrupted! But some
1830 sysadmins, who don't want to repartition the root
1831 filesystem to be small and compact, may really want this
1832 option turned on.
1833
Theodore Ts'o74becf31997-04-26 14:37:06 +00001834Wed Jan 31 11:06:08 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>

1836 * Release of E2fsprogs version 1.02
1837
1838Tue Oct 30 21:14:12 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1839
1840 * mke2fs.c (check_plausibility): Add check to warn user if they
1841 are trying to mke2fs the whole disk. (/dev/hda
1842 vs. /dev/hda1)
1843
1844Fri Dec 15 19:09:56 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1845
1846 * fsck.c (check_all): If we break out of the loop because we are
1847 serializing and have just started at fsck we haven't
1848 finished the pass. We need to go round again in case there
1849 are more filesystems to be done in this pass. (Patch
1850 submitted by Mike Jagdis)
1851
1852Sat Dec 9 10:07:16 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1853
1854 * dumpe2fs.c (in_use): test_bit() was renamed to
1855 ext2fs_test_bit().
1856
Theodore Ts'o297f47a1997-04-26 14:25:20 +00001857Mon Oct 30 20:21:18 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1858
1859 * fsck.c (fsck_device): Check fstype instead of type; this was a
1860 stupid typo which caused coredumps in some cases.
1861
Theodore Ts'oa418d3a1997-04-26 14:00:26 +00001862Thu Oct 26 12:05:18 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1863
1864 * Makefile.in (install): Strip programs when they are installed.
1865
1866Fri Aug 18 15:10:40 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@dcl>
1867
1868 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Move call of check_mount() from main() to PRS(),
1869 so we do the check to see if the filesystem is mounted
1870 *before* we try to determine the size of the device.
1871
1872Wed Sep 6 23:34:07 1995 Remy Card <card@bbj>
1873
1874 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): Load the informations from /etc/fstab in
1875 the same order.
1876
1877Thu Aug 17 22:33:09 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1878
1879 * mke2fs.c (check_mount): Use the new ext2fs_check_if_mounted()
1880 function to determine if the device is mounted.
1881
1882 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Change call to use the new
1883 ext2fs_get_device_size() function in order to determine
1884 the size of the filesystem. Remove get_size() and
1885 is_valid_offset(), which are no longer called.
1886
1887Fri Aug 11 08:26:24 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@lurch.mit.edu>
1888
1889 * fsck.c (fsck_device): Make sure fstype has been set by the user
1890 and that it does not begin with "no" and the user has
1891 specified exactly one type before using it as the type to
1892 check.
1893
1894Fri Aug 11 14:17:18 1995 Remy Card <card@bbj>
1895
1896 * badblocks.8:
1897 * chattr.1:
1898 * dumpe2fs.8:
1899 * fsck.8:
1900 * lsattr.1:
1901 * mke2fs.8:
1902 * mklost+found.8:
1903 * tune2fs.8: Updated date and version number.
1904
1905Thu Aug 10 14:18:36 1995 Remy Card <card@bbj>
1906
1907 * tune2fs.c: Fixed a bug which prevented the use of user and group
1908 names with the -g and -u options. Thanks to Jean Christophe
1909 ANDRE <progfou@mycrob.cafard.freenix.fr>.
1910
1911 * mke2fs.8:
1912 * tune2fs.8: Fixed a spelling error in Ted's name :-)
1913
1914Wed Aug 9 20:41:54 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@dcl>
1915
1916 * mke2fs.c (count_blocks): Divide the size by
1917 EXT2_BLOCK_SIZE(&param), instead of assuming that the
1918 blocksize is always 1024 bytes.
1919
1920Sat Aug 5 12:00:51 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@lurch.mit.edu>
1921
1922 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Use malloc() instead of alloca() --- alloca() is
1923 not portable!! In any case putenv() in some systems must
1924 take a static character array or malloc()'ed memory;
1925 passing memory allocated using alloca() to putenv() is not
1926 advisable.
1927
1928 * chattr.c (chattr_dir_proc):
1929 * lsattr.c (lsattr_dir_proc): Use malloc() instead of alloca() ---
1930 alloca is not portable!
1931
1932 * fsck.c (fsck_device): If the filesystem type is specified by the
1933 user using the -t option, let it override the type in
1934 /etc/fstab.
1935
1936 * fsck.c (strdup): Don't build strdup() if the system defines it.
1937
1938Mon Jun 12 19:15:10 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o (tytso@dcl)
1939
1940 * chattr.c, lsattr.c: Include <sys/types.h> for <dirent.h>'s
1941 benefit.
1942
1943 * The $(UPROGS) go in bin, not sbin.
1944
1945 * badblocks.c, chattr.c, dumpe2fs.c, fsck.c, lsattr.c, mke2fs.c,
1946 tune2fs.c: Don't include <getopt.h> if it doesn't exist.
1947
1948Mon Jun 12 16:36:04 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@dcl>
1949
1950 * badblocks.c, chattr.c, dumpe2fs.c, fsck.c, lsattr.c, mke2fs.c,
1951 tune2fs.c: Only include getopt.h if HAVE_GETOPT_H is defined.
1952
1953Sat Jun 10 23:37:09 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@lurch.mit.edu>
1954
1955 * chattr.c: Include errno.h, since we use errno
1956
1957 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): If HAVE_MNTENT_H is not defined,
1958 explicitly initialize filesys_info to be NULL.
1959
1960 * mke2fs.c: Include the stdio.h and errno.h header files
1961
1962Thu Jun 8 13:25:23 1995 Miles Bader <miles@churchy.gnu.ai.mit.edu>
1963
1964 * mke2fs.c: Only include <linux/fs.h> if we can.
1965 (get_size): Don't try to use the BLKGETSIZE ioctl unless it's defined.
1966 (check_mount): Only check to see if the device is mounted if
1967 HAVE_MNTENT_H is defined (by configure).
1968
1969 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): Only try to get info about filesystems if
1970 HAVE_MNTENT_H is defined (by configure).
1971 (main): Allocate space for a new fsck_path instead of append to a
1972 statically sized buffer.
1973 (PRS): Use alloca to allocate the new path string, instead of
1974 having a fixed size buffer (which was the wrong size anyway).
1975
1976 * chattr.c (chattr_dir_proc): Use alloca to allocate space for a
1977 filename instead of using a fixed-size buffer.
1978 * lsattr.c (lsattr_dir_proc): Ditto.
1979 * mklost+fond.c (main): Calculate the actual needed size for the
1980 path buffer instead of using MAXPATHLEN (which not all systems have).
1981
1982 * badblocks.c: Only include linux include files if we have them.
1983 (flush_bufs): New function to flush a block device, optionally
1984 syncing it first. This replaces other copies of this code.
1985 (test_ro): Replace calls to ioctl with flush_bufs().
1986 (test_rw): Ditto.
1987
1988 * Makefile.in: Rewritten to conform to GNU coding standards and
1989 support separate compilation directories.
1990
Theodore Ts'of3db3561997-04-26 13:34:30 +00001991Sat Mar 11 10:59:58 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@localhost>
1992
1993 * mke2fs.c (main, zap_bootblock): Added new function
1994 zap_bootblock() which clears the first 512 bytes of the
1995 filesystem. This protects the filesystem from being
1996 misidentified as a MS-DOS FAT filesystem.
1997
1998 * badblocks.c (alarm_intr, test_ro, test_rw): Increase the space
1999 allocated for printing the block numbers, so that the
2000 display doesn't get corrupted when running badblocks on a
2001 very large partition.
2002
2003 * badblocks.c (do_test, test_ro, test_rw): Added missing cast to
2004 ext2_loff_t, so that when checking a large device,
2005 spurious seek errors aren't reported.
2006
2007 * mke2fs.c (count_blocks): Declare mid to be of type ext2_loff_t
2008 instead of type int, so that it works for filesystems
2009 greater than 2 GB. (Fortunately count_blocks is only
2010 called if the device does not support the BLKGETSIZE
2011 ioctl, which most do.)
2012
2013 * fsck.c (ignore): Add check to ignore filesystems with a pass
2014 number of zero. (This check was accidentally deleted at
2015 during 0.5b development.)
2016
2017Sat Dec 31 00:47:16 1994 <tytso@rsx-11.mit.edu>
2018
2019 * mke2fs.c (new_table_block, alloc_tables, PRS, main): Add a new
2020 option, -S, which only writes the superblock and group
2021 descriptors. Useful for recovering when all of the
2022 superblocks are corrupted somehow (as a last ditch
2023 measure).
2024
2025 Also, don't bother initializing the bitmap blocks in
2026 alloc_tables(), since they will be overwritten at the end
2027 anyway. (Should speed up mke2fs by a little.)
2028
2029Tue Dec 6 02:20:55 1994 <tytso@rsx-11.mit.edu>
2030
2031 * fsck.c (main): Fix stupid typo where a null inst would be freed.
2032
2033 * fsck.c (wait_one): Check WIFEXITED on status before trying to
2034 extract the exit status. In other cases, return
2035 FSCK_ERROR if the back end processor exited with a signal.
2036
2037Tue Nov 15 10:20:00 1994 Remy Card <card@bbj>
2038
2039 * tune2fs.c (main): Fixed a bug which prevented the use of the
2040 new options.
2041 Added the `w' (week) suffix recognition in the check interval.
2042
2043Sun Nov 13 15:58:48 1994 (tytso@rsx-11)
2044
2045 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): If the user has an obviously old
2046 /etc/fstab file, issue a warning message and assume that
2047 all partitions should be checked.
2048
2049Sat Nov 12 00:33:18 1994 (tytso@rsx-11)
2050
2051 * dumpe2fs.c (list_desc): Update to new inode and block bitmap
2052 structures.
2053
2054 * mke2fs.c (create_root_dir): Create the root directory owned by
2055 the effective uid.
2056
2057Mon Nov 7 22:04:37 1994 Remy Card <card@bbj>
2058
2059 * tune2fs.c (main.c): Added support for new options:
2060 -r reserved_blocks_count, -g reserved_gid, -u reserved_uid.
2061
2062Sun Aug 21 00:57:33 1994 Theodore Y. Ts'o (tytso@rt-11)
2063
2064 * fsck.c (ignore): If the pass number is 0, ignore the filesystem.
2065
2066Wed Aug 17 21:55:03 1994 Remy Card (card@bbj)
2067
2068 * badblocks.c (test_rw): Added verbose output like in the
2069 read-only test.
2070
2071 (do_test and test_rw): Use the llseek system call if available.
2072
2073 * chattr.c: Added support for new attributes.
2074
2075 * lsattr.c: Added support for long format.
2076
2077 * mke2fs.c (usage): Fixed bogus usage message.
2078
2079 (valid_offset): Use the llseek system call if available.
2080
2081Wed Aug 17 10:50:57 1994 Theodore Y. Ts'o (tytso@rt-11)
2082
2083 * mke2fs.c (handle_bad_blocks): Check to see if a bad block is
2084 where a backup superblock/group descriptor is stored. If so,
2085 print a warning message and adjust the superblock counts so that
2086 they are correct. (Otherwise, the bad block will get counted
2087 twice and the # of free blocks count will be wrong.)
2088
2089 (alloc_tables): Removed code which calcualated the free block
2090 statistics, which was moved to lib/ext2fs/initialize.c. This
2091 allows the bad block code to adjust the group descriptor
2092 statistics if necessary.
