Randy Dunlap9beeb9f2007-01-30 14:30:08 -080012 A cluster filesystem.
David Teiglandb3b94fa2006-01-16 16:50:04 +000013
Randy Dunlap9beeb9f2007-01-30 14:30:08 -080014 Allows a cluster of computers to simultaneously use a block device
15 that is shared between them (with FC, iSCSI, NBD, etc...). GFS reads
16 and writes to the block device like a local filesystem, but also uses
17 a lock module to allow the computers coordinate their I/O so
18 filesystem consistency is maintained. One of the nifty features of
19 GFS is perfect consistency -- changes made to the filesystem on one
20 machine show up immediately on all other machines in the cluster.

Steven Whitehouse048bca22008-05-23 14:46:04 +010022 To use the GFS2 filesystem in a cluster, you will need to enable
23 the locking module below. Documentation and utilities for GFS2 can
Randy Dunlap9beeb9f2007-01-30 14:30:08 -080024 be found here: http://sources.redhat.com/cluster

Steven Whitehousef057f6c2009-01-12 10:43:39 +000026 The "nolock" lock module is now built in to GFS2 by default. If
27 you want to use the DLM, be sure to enable HOTPLUG and IPv4/6
28 networking.

Randy Dunlap9beeb9f2007-01-30 14:30:08 -080034 Multiple node locking module for GFS2
David Teiglandb3b94fa2006-01-16 16:50:04 +000035
Steven Whitehousef057f6c2009-01-12 10:43:39 +000036 Most users of GFS2 will require this. It provides the locking
Randy Dunlap9beeb9f2007-01-30 14:30:08 -080037 interface between GFS2 and the DLM, which is required to use GFS2
38 in a cluster environment.
