add build_log to kernel build
After getting thoroughly sick of trying to reverse-engineer the kernel
build version out of an older test-harness' control files, it struck
me we should just record the thing during the build processes as we
know it. The attached patch creates an easily parsible build_log file
recording the main actions we took during build.
Plus I fixed up a couple of bugs in the extraversion() handling.
