Improve configure tests for ffsl

In particular:
- ffsl always returns int, not long, on FreeBSD, Linux, and OSX.
- Mute compiler warnings about rv being unused (and the potential for
compilers optimizing out the call completely) by dumping the value
   with printf(3).
