75XML is a standard for
76markup-based structured documents. Here is an example XML
77document:

78

79<EXAMPLE prop1="gnome is great" prop2="& linux too">
80

81
Welcome to Gnome

82

83 <chapter>
84
The Linux adventure

85
bla bla bla ...

86

87
...

88 </chapter>
89</EXAMPLE>

90
The first line specifies that it's an XML document and gives useful
91information about its encoding. Then the document is a text format whose
92structure is specified by tags between brackets. Each tag opened has
93to be closed. XML is pedantic about this. However, if a tag is empty
94(no content), a single tag can serve as both the opening and closing tag if
95it ends with
/>
rather than with
>
. Note
96that, for example, the image tag has no content (just an attribute) and is
97closed by ending the tag with
/>
.

98
XML can be applied sucessfully to a wide range of uses, from long term
99structured document maintenance (where it follows the steps of SGML) to
100simple data encoding mechanisms like configuration file formatting (glade),
101spreadsheets (gnumeric), or even shorter lived documents such as WebDAV where
102it is used to encode remote calls between a client and a server.
