87XML is a standard for
88markup-based structured documents. Here is an example XML
89document:

90

91<EXAMPLE prop1="gnome is great" prop2="& linux too">

93
Welcome to Gnome

94

95 <chapter>
96
The Linux adventure

97
bla bla bla ...

98

99
...

100 </chapter>
101</EXAMPLE>

102
The first line specifies that it's an XML document and gives useful
103information about its encoding. Then the document is a text format whose
104structure is specified by tags between brackets. Each tag opened has
105to be closed. XML is pedantic about this. However, if a tag is empty
106(no content), a single tag can serve as both the opening and closing tag if
107it ends with
/>
rather than with
>
. Note
108that, for example, the image tag has no content (just an attribute) and is
109closed by ending the tag with
/>
.

110
XML can be applied sucessfully to a wide range of uses, from long term
111structured document maintenance (where it follows the steps of SGML) to
112simple data encoding mechanisms like configuration file formatting (glade),
113spreadsheets (gnumeric), or even shorter lived documents such as WebDAV where
114it is used to encode remote calls between a client and a server.
