86XML is a standard for
87markup-based structured documents. Here is an example XML
88document:

89

90<EXAMPLE prop1="gnome is great" prop2="& linux too">

92
Welcome to Gnome

93

95
The Linux adventure

96
bla bla bla ...

97

98
...

99 </chapter>
100</EXAMPLE>

101
The first line specifies that it's an XML document and gives useful
102information about its encoding. Then the document is a text format whose
103structure is specified by tags between brackets. Each tag opened has
104to be closed. XML is pedantic about this. However, if a tag is empty
105(no content), a single tag can serve as both the opening and closing tag if
106it ends with
/>
rather than with
>
. Note
107that, for example, the image tag has no content (just an attribute) and is
108closed by ending the tag with
/>
.

109
XML can be applied sucessfully to a wide range of uses, from long term
110structured document maintenance (where it follows the steps of SGML) to
111simple data encoding mechanisms like configuration file formatting (glade),
112spreadsheets (gnumeric), or even shorter lived documents such as WebDAV where
113it is used to encode remote calls between a client and a server.
