Amaury Forgeot d'Arc00c94ed2008-10-07 20:40:09 +000015- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
16 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
17 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
18 it correctly refers to the initial element.

118-----------------
119
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000120- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
121
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000122- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
123 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
124 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
125 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
126 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
127 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
128 64bit values.
129
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000130- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
131 error.
132
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000133- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
134 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
135 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
136 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
137
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000138- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
139 a unicode argument.
140
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000141- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
142
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000143- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000144 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000145 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
146
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000147- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000148 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
149 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
150 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
151 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
152 type object.
153
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000154- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
155
156- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
157
158- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
159
160- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
161
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000162- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
163 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
164
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000165- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
166 ``__delslice__``.
167
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000168- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
169 library targets in the Makefile.
170
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000171- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
172 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
173 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
174

Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000190- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
191 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
192 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000292
293Core and Builtins
294-----------------
295
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000296- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
297 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
298 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
299 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
300 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
301 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
302 default.
303
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000304- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
305 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
306
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000307- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
308 value again.
309
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000310- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
311 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
312 and introducing s*.
313
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000314- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
315 object was stored in the freelist.
316
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000317- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
318 ValueError consistently across platforms.
319
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000320- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
321 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return

334 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
335
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000336- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
337 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
338 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
339 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
340 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
341 failed have been fixed.

354
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000355- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable

357 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
358 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in

486
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000487Core and Builtins
488-----------------
489
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000490- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
491 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
492 an integer using operator.index().
493
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000494- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
495 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
496
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000497- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
498 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
499
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000500- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
501 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
502 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
503
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000504- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
505 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
506 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
507 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
508 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
509 level.
510
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000511- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
512 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
513 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
514 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
515 all imports from that module to fail.
516
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000517- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
518 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
519 new-style classes.
520
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000521- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
522 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
523 another file in sys.stdout.
524
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000525- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
526 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
527 another thread's dictionary.
528
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000529- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
530 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
531 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
532 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
533 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
534 10, -1).
535
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000536- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
537 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
538 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000539
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000540- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
541 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
542 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000576- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
577 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000578 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000579 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
580 merged into trunk.
581
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000582- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000595- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
596 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
597
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000598- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

1052 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1053 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001119
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001120- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1121 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1122 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1123 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1124 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1125 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1126 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1127 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1128 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1129 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1130 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1131 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1132 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1133 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1134 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1135 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1136 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1137 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1138 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1139 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1140
1141 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1142 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1143 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1144 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1145 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1146 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1147 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1148 access to the underlying socket used.
1149
1150 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1151 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1152 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001153
1154 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001155 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1158
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001159 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001693- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1694 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1695 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1696 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1697 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001698 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1699 as supported by type.__new__().

1703 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1704 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
