Neal Norwitz92422fb2006-08-18 03:57:54 +000010*Release date: XX-XXX-200X*
11
12Core and builtins
13-----------------
14
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +000015- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
16 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
17 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
18 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
19
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +000020- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their
21 throw() method even though string exceptions no longer allowed.
22
Brett Cannona0c05512007-09-10 21:38:27 +000023- Issue #1096: Prevent a segfault from getting the repr of a very deeply nested
24 list by using the recursion counter.
25
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +000026- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
27 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
28 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
29 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
30 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
31
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +000032- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source
33 encoding.
34
Neal Norwitz766d8802007-08-03 06:46:29 +000035- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not defined.
36
Martin v. Löwis68192102007-07-21 06:55:02 +000037- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while keeping
38 backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size, and
39 PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
40
Georg Brandl7c3b50d2007-07-12 08:38:00 +000041- Patch #1673759: add a missing overflow check when formatting floats
42 with %G.
43
Martin v. Löwis6371cd82007-06-09 07:42:52 +000044- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.

49 when a large width is passed on 32-bit platforms.
Neal Norwitz7dbd2a32007-06-09 03:36:34 +000050
Martin v. Löwisda587ab2007-06-08 17:29:20 +000051- Bug #1733488: Fix compilation of bufferobject.c on AIX.
52
Georg Brandl25497a12007-06-01 19:20:27 +000053- Bug #1722485: remove docstrings again when running with -OO.
Georg Brandla5ea6892007-06-01 11:33:33 +000054
Neal Norwitz0ac60192007-05-27 04:08:54 +000055- Add new attribute names for function objects. All the func_* become
56 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
57
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +000058- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
59 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.
60
Georg Brandl2134e752007-05-21 20:34:16 +000061- Patch #1686487: you can now pass any mapping after '**' in function
62 calls.

69
Armin Rigo9790a272007-05-02 19:23:31 +000070- Bug #1303614: don't expose object's __dict__ when the dict is
71 inherited from a builtin base.
72
Vinay Sajip8549ce32007-05-06 17:53:37 +000073- When __slots__ are set to a unicode string, make it work the same as
Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +000074 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
75
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +000076- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.
77

79 translations that only remove characters without re-mapping the
80 remaining characters.
81
Georg Brandl5cb76c12007-03-21 09:00:39 +000082- Patch #1682205: a TypeError while unpacking an iterable is no longer
83 masked by a generic one with the message "unpack non-sequence".
84
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +000085- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
86
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +000087- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
88 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
89 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
90 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
91 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +000092 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
93 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +000094
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +000095- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
96 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
97 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
98 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
99
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000100- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.

115 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
116
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +0000117- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
118 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
119 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
120
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +0000121- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
122 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).

127 forms. This means complex(repr(x)) now works instead of raising a
128 ValueError.
129
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +0000130- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
131 makes the filenames the warning module prints much more sensible when
132 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
133
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +0000134- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
135 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
136 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like

142
Georg Brandl0fca97a2007-03-05 22:28:08 +0000143- Patch #1674228: when assigning a slice (old-style), check for the
144 sq_ass_slice instead of the sq_slice slot.
145
Neal Norwitz88516a62007-02-26 22:41:45 +0000146- When printing an unraisable error, don't print exceptions. before the name.

Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +00001059
1060Core and builtins
1061-----------------
1062
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001063- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001064 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1065 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001066
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001067 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1068 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1069 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1070 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1071 exception, logged, etc.
1072
1073 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1074 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001075
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001076- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
1077
1078- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
1079 with new-style classes.
1080
1081- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1082 classic classes.
1083
1084- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1085 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1086 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1087 to effectively use __index__.
1088
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +00001089- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
1090 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
1091
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +00001092- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +00001094- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
1095 sys.stdin is closed.
1096
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +00001097- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
1098 the Python dll again.
1099
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001100- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
1101 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
1102 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
1103 will be regenerated.
1104
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +00001105- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
1106 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
1107 immediately popped off the stack.
1108
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +00001109- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

1116 generated for generator expressions.
1117
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001118- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
1119 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
1120 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
1121 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
1122
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001123- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001124 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is

1130
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001131- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001132 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +00001133 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
1134 duplicate UUIDs.
1135
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +00001136- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
1137 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().

1225
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001226- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously

1228
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001229- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1230
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001231- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1232 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1233 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1234
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001235- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1236 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1237
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001238- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1239 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1240 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1241 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1242
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001243- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1244 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1245 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1246 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1247
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +00001248- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

1262
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001263- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001264 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001268 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001269 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

1289
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001290- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001291 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

1293
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +00001294- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
1295 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
1296
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001297- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1298 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1299 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1300 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1301 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1302
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001303- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

1307
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +00001308- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with

1313
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +00001314- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.

Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +00001316- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
1317 value in the traceback module.
1318
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +00001319- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
1320
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001321- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1322
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001323- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1324 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1325 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1326 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1327 tuple pre-2.4.
1328
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001329- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1330
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001331- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1332 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1333 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1334 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1335 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1336 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1337 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1338 charset and language parts).
1339
1340 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1341 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1342
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001343- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
1344
1345- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
1346 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1347
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001348- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1349 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1350 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1351 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1360
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +00001361- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more

Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +00001364- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001450- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1451 started after line 256.
1452
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001453- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1454 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1455 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1456 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1457 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1458 an extension.

1597-----------------
1598
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001599- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1600 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1601 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1602
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001603- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1604 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1605
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001606- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1607
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001608- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001609 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001610
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001611- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1612 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1613 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1614 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1615 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1616
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001617- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1618 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1619
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001620- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1621 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1622 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1623 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1624 requested.
1625
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001626- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1627 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1628
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001629- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1630 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1631 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1632
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001633- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1634 Unicode 4.1.
1635
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001636- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1637 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1638 fewer open calls on startup.
1639
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001640- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1641 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1642 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1643 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1644 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1645
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001646- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1647 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1648 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1649 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1650
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001651- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1652
1653- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1654 "base" parameter.
1655
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001656- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1657 objects.
1658
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001659- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1660 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1661 C library function.
1662
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001663- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1664
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001665- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1666
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001667- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1668 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1669 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1670 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1671
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001672- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1673
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001674- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1675
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001676- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1677 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1678 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1679 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1680
1681- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1682 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1683 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1684 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1692
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001693- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1694 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1695

Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001698- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1699 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1700 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1701 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

1714 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1715
1716- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1717 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1718
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001719- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1720 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1721 Windows platforms).
1722
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001723- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

1745 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1746
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001747- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

1781
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001782- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1783 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1784 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1785 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1786 of the matching pair.

1806 for lookup.
1807
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001808- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1809 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1810 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1811 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1812 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001892- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1893 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1894
1895 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile

1900
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001901- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1902
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001903- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1904 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1905 multiple times.
1906
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001907- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1908 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1909 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1910
1911- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1912 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1913
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001914- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1915 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1916 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001917 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001918 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001919
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001920 def __hash__(self):
1921 return id(self) # WRONG
1922
1923 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1924 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001925 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001926 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1927 necessarily so.
1928
1929- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001930 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001931 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001932 #1454844)
1933
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001934- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1935 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1936 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1937 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1938 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

1984
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001985- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in

Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00002049- test_contextlib now checks contextlib.nested can cope with exceptions
2050 being raised and caught inside exit handlers.
2051
Nick Coghlan27ec1a72006-04-24 04:32:47 +00002052- test_cmd_line now checks operation of the -m and -c command switches
2053
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002054- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2055 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2056 the current Decimal context.
2057
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002058- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2059 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2060 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2061 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

2088-----------------
2089
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002090- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2091 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2092
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002093- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2094 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2095 end in .PYD.
2096
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002097- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2098 sys.stdout.encoding.
2099
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002100- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2101
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002102- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2103
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002104- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2105
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002106- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2107 5.4 and later versions.
2108
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002109- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2110 now gives a SyntaxError.
2111
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002112- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2113 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2114 (closes patch #1170323).
2115
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002116- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2117 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2118 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2119 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2120 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2121 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2122 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002123 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2124 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002125 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2126 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2127
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002128- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2129 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2130 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2131
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002132- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2133 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2134 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2135 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2136
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002137- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2138
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002139- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2140 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2141 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2142 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2143
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002144- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2145 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2146 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2147 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2148 absolute_import' is used.
2149
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002150- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2151 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2152 exceptions.
2153
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002154- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002155 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2156
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002157- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002158
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002159- Patch 1433928:
2160 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2161 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2162 KeyError.
2163
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002164- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2165 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2166 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002167 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002168 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2169 - The built-in file type.
2170 - The thread.LockType type.
2171 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2172 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2173 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002174
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002175- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2176 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2177
2178 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2179 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2180
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002181- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2182
2183- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2184 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2185 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2186 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2187 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002188
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002189- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2190 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2191 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2192
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002193- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2194 configure would break checking curses.h.
2195
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002196- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2197 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2198
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002199- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
2200
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00002201- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
2202
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002203- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2204
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002205- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2206 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2207
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002208- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00002209 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002210 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2211
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002212- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2213 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002214 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002215
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00002216- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
2217 now encodes backslash correctly.
2218
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00002219- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
2220
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002221- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00002222 and long longs.
2223
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002224- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002225 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002226 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002227
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002228- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2229 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2230 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2231 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2232 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
2233
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002234- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002235

2239 syntax tree is available for read-only (non-compile) access
Martin v. Löwis577b5b92006-02-27 15:23:19 +00002240 to Python code; an _ast module was added.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00002241
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002242- SF bug #1167751: fix incorrect code being produced for generator expressions.
Neal Norwitz16af7342005-10-21 06:25:33 +00002243 The following code now raises a SyntaxError: foo(a = i for i in range(10))

2253
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002254- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002255 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
2256 was empty.
2257
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00002258- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
2259 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
2260
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002261- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00002262 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002263
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00002264- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
2265 codes.
2266
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00002267- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
2268 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
2269 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
2270
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00002271- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
2272 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
2273
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00002274- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00002275 (fixes bug #1119418).
2276
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00002277- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
2278
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00002279- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
2280 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
2281
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002282- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2283 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2284 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2285
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002286- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
2287
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00002288- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
2289 reference counts in some error exit cases.
2290
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002291- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2292 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2293 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002294 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002295 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2296 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2297 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2298 realloc.
2299
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00002300- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
2301 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
2302
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00002303- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
2304 like their int counterparts.
2305
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002306- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2307 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2308 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
2309 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
2310 for a longer write-up of the problem).
2311
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00002312- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
2313 serializing floats.
2314
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002315- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2316 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2317 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
2318

2320 278.
2321
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002322- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2323 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2324 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2325 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002326 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002327 PyNumber_*().

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002330- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
2331 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
2332 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
2333 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2334
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002335- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before

2337 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2338 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
2339 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2340
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002341- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads

2393 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2394 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2395 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2396 the same thread id).

Georg Brandlc5e3d8a2006-07-17 13:26:33 +00002588- Patch #1388073: Numerous __-prefixed attributes of unittest.TestCase have
2589 been renamed to have only a single underscore prefix. This was done to
2590 make subclassing easier.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002591
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002592- PEP 338: new module runpy defines a run_module function to support
2593 executing modules which provide access to source code or a code object
2594 via the PEP 302 import mechanisms.
2595

2597 flag to -1 (unknown) since it can't tell from the date whether it should

2605
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002606- Added the sqlite3 package. This is based on pysqlite2.1.3, and provides
Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002607 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002608 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002609 module will not be built.
2610
Tim Petersc17976e2006-04-01 00:26:53 +00002611- Bug #1460340: ``random.sample(dict)`` failed in various ways. Dicts
2612 aren't officially supported here, and trying to use them will probably
2613 raise an exception some day. But dicts have been allowed, and "mostly
2614 worked", so support for them won't go away without warning.
2615
Georg Brandl338ef7d2006-03-31 18:42:16 +00002616- Bug #1445068: getpass.getpass() can now be given an explicit stream

Raymond Hettingerfd3fcf02006-03-24 20:43:29 +00002627- Queue.Queue objects now support .task_done() and .join() methods
2628 to make it easier to monitor when daemon threads have completed
2629 processing all enqueued tasks. Patch #1455676.

2634
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00002635- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
2636 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2637 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2638 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2639 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2640 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
2641 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.
2642
Walter Dörwald40108c92006-03-27 08:15:44 +00002643- Patches #1436130/#1443155: codecs.lookup() now returns a CodecInfo object
2644 (a subclass of tuple) that provides incremental decoders and encoders
2645 (a way to use stateful codecs without the stream API). Python functions
2646 codecs.getincrementaldecoder() and codecs.getincrementalencoder() as well
2647 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
2648 have been added.
Walter Dörwaldabb02e52006-03-15 11:35:15 +00002649
Walter Dörwald067db482006-03-15 22:17:27 +00002650- Patch #1359365: Calling next() on a closed StringIO.String object raises
2651 a ValueError instead of a StopIteration now (like file and cString.String do).
2652 cStringIO.StringIO.isatty() will raise a ValueError now if close() has been
2653 called before (like file and StringIO.StringIO do).
Walter Dörwald197e8322006-03-15 22:13:13 +00002654
Martin v. Löwis04824ce2006-03-10 21:26:16 +00002655- A regrtest option -w was added to re-run failed tests in verbose mode.

2734 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
2735 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

2844 support for datetime.{datetime, date, time} objects. With use_datetime set
2845 to True, applications shouldn't have to fiddle with the DateTime wrapper
2846 class at all.
2847
Martin v. Löwis55f1bb82005-03-21 20:56:35 +00002848- distutils.commands.upload was added to support uploading distribution

2853
Raymond Hettinger267b8682005-03-27 10:47:39 +00002854- decimal operator and comparison methods now return NotImplemented
2855 instead of raising a TypeError when interacting with other types. This
2856 allows other classes to implement __radd__ style methods and have them
2857 work as expected.
2858
Raymond Hettingerbea3f6f2005-03-15 04:59:17 +00002859- Bug #1163325: Decimal infinities failed to hash. Attempting to

2915
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002916- Enhancements to the csv module:
2917
2918 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002919 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002920 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002921 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2922 reporting.
2923 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2924 dictates.
2925 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002926 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002927 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002928 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2929 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002930 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2931 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002932 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002933 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2934 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2935 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2936 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2937 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2938 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2939 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2940 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2941 without first creating a dialect class.
2942 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2943 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2944 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002945 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002946 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2947 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002948 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2949 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2950 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2951 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002952 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2953 This has been fixed.
2954
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002955- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2956 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2957 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2958 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2959
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002960- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2961

2963 (Bug #951915).
2964
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002965- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2966 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2967 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002968 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002969
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002970- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2971
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002972- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2973 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2974
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002975- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2976
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00002977- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.

2980
Raymond Hettinger6c92d762004-12-05 03:28:00 +00002981- the pstats module no longer uses the deprecated ignore() method.
2982
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002983- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2984
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002985- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2986 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2987 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2988
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002989- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002990 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002991
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002992- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2993 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2994 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2995
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002996- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2997 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2998 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002999
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003000- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
3001 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003002
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003003- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3004 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
3005
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003006- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
3007 correctly.
3008
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003009- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3010 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3011 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3012 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3013 between two lines.
3014
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003015- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3016 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3017 handlers.
3018
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003019- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003020 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3021 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003022
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003023- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
3024 considering it exactly like a '*'.
3025
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00003026- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
3027 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003028
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00003029- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
3030
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00003031- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
3032 touch the recursion limit.
3033
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00003034- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
3035 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003036 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3037 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3038 special classes that use unicode.

3064
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00003065- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
3066 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
3067 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00003068 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00003070- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
3071 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
3072 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
3073
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00003074- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
3075
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00003076- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is

3078
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003079- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3080 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3081 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3082 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3083 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3084 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3085 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3086 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
3087
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00003088- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
3089 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
3090 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.

3094-----
3095
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003096- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3097 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3098 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3099 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3100 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3101 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3102 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3103 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3104 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3105 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
