12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000015- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
16 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000018- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
19 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
20 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
21
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000022- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
23 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
24 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
25 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
26 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
27 failed have been fixed.

33 asking for a specific length.
34
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000035- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
36 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
37
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000038- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.

41 on a closed shelf.
42

44
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000045- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
46
47- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
48 invalid arguments.
49
50- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
51 with None arguments.
52
53- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
54 configuration files.
55
56- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
57
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000058- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
59 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
60 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
61
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000062

67
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000068Core and Builtins
69-----------------
70
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000071- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
72 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
73 an integer using operator.index().
74
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000075- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
76 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
77
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000078- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
79 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
80
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000081- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
82 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
83 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
84
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000085- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
86 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
87 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
88 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
89 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
90 level.
91
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000092- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
93 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
94 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
95 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
96 all imports from that module to fail.
97
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000098- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
99 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
100 new-style classes.
101
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000102- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
103 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
104 another file in sys.stdout.
105
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000106- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
107 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
108 another thread's dictionary.
109
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000110- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
111 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
112 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
113 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
114 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
115 10, -1).
116
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000117- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
118 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
119 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000120
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000121- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
122 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
123 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000124

133
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000134- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with

140 a valid dlerror() message.
141
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000142- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
143 incomplete structure was created.
144

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000151- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
152 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000153 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000154 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
155 merged into trunk.
156
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000157- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

162
163- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously

171 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
172
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000173- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
174 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000180 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
181 Prevents a deadlock.
182
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000183- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
184 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
185 default https port (443).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000622- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
623 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
624 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
625 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
626 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
627 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
628 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
629 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

690-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000691
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000692- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
693 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
694 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
695 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
696 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
697 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
698 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
699 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
700 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
701 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
702 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
703 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
704 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
705 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
706 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
707 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
708 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
709 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
710 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
711 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
712
713 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
714 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
715 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
716 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
717 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
718 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
719 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
720 access to the underlying socket used.
721
722 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
723 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
724 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000725
726 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000727 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000728 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
729 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
730
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000731 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
732 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001007
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001008- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001009 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1010
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001011- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1012 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1013 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1014 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1015 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1016 module is:
1017 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1018
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001019- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1020 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1021 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1022 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1023 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1024 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1025
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001026- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1027 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1028 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1029 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1030 PyObject_Format().
1031
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001032- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1033 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1034 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001035
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001036- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001037 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1038 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001043- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1044 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1045 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001046
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001047- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1048 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1049 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001050
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001051- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1052 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1053

1062 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1063 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001064
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001065- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

1082 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1083 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
