421
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000422- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
423 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
424 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
425 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
426 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
427 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
428 64bit values.
429
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000430- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

434 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
435 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
436 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
437
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000438- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with

446
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000447- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000448 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__

593Core and Builtins
594-----------------
595
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000596- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
597 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
598 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
599 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
600 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
601 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
602 default.
603
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000604- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
605 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
606
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000607- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
608 value again.
609
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000610- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
611 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
612 and introducing s*.
613
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000614- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
615 object was stored in the freelist.
616
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000617- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
618 ValueError consistently across platforms.
619
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000620- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
621 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
622 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
623
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000624- Apply security patches from Apple.
625
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000626- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
627 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
628
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000629- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
630 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
631
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000632- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
633 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
634 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
635
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000636- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
637 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
638 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
639 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
640 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
641 failed have been fixed.

657 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
658 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000787Core and Builtins
788-----------------
789
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000790- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
791 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
792 an integer using operator.index().
793
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000794- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
795 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
796
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000797- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
798 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
799
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000800- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
801 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
802 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
803
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000804- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
805 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
806 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
807 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
808 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
809 level.
810
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000811- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
812 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
813 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
814 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
815 all imports from that module to fail.
816
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000817- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
818 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
819 new-style classes.
820
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000821- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
822 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
823 another file in sys.stdout.
824
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000825- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
826 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
827 another thread's dictionary.
828
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000829- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
830 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
831 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
832 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
833 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
834 10, -1).
835
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000836- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
837 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
838 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000839
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000840- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000876- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
877 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000878 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000879 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
880 merged into trunk.

897

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001420- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1421 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1422 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1423 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1424 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1425 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1426 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1427 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1428 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1429 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1430 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1431 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1432 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1433 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1434 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1435 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1436 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1437 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1438 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1439 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1440
1441 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1442 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1443 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1444 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1445 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1446 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1447 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1448 access to the underlying socket used.
1449
1450 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1451 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1452 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001453
1454 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1749 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1750 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1751 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1752 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1753

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001993- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1994 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1995 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001998 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
