10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000015- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
16 ValueError consistently across platforms.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000018- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
19 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
20 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
21
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000022- Apply security patches from Apple.
23
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000024- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
25 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
26
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000027- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
28 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
29
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000030- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
31 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
32 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
33
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000034- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
35 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
36 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
37 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
38 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
39 failed have been fixed.

42-------
43
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000044- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
45 the reload() built-in has been removed.
46
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000047- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
48 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
49 ConfigParser, cookielib, DocXMLRPCServer, email, filecmp, fileinput, inspect,
50 logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile, pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter,
Brett Cannon03446c42008-08-08 04:19:32 +000051 SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter,
52 test.test_support, textwrap, threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse,
53 wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000054
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +000055- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
56 raised an AttributeError.
57
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000058- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
59 asking for a specific length.
60
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000061- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
62 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
63
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000064- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
65
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +000066- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
67 on a closed shelf.
68
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000069- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
70
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000071- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
72
73- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
74 invalid arguments.
75
76- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
77 with None arguments.
78
79- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
80 configuration files.
81
82- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
83
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000084- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
85 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
86 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
87
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +000088- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
89 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
90 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
91
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +000092Build
93-----
94
95- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".

98-------------
99
100- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
101 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
102 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
103 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

110
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000111Core and Builtins
112-----------------
113
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000114- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
115 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
116 an integer using operator.index().
117
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000118- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
119 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
120
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000121- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
122 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
123
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000124- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
125 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
126 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
127
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000128- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
129 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
130 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
131 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
132 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
133 level.
134
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000135- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
136 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
137 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
138 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
139 all imports from that module to fail.
140
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000141- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
142 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
143 new-style classes.
144
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000145- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
146 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
147 another file in sys.stdout.
148
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000149- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
150 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
151 another thread's dictionary.
152
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000153- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
154 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
155 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
156 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
157 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
158 10, -1).
159
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000160- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
161 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
162 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000163
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000164- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
165 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
166 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000167
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000168Library
169-------

172
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000173- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method

Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000179- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
180 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
181

Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000184- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
185 a valid dlerror() message.
186
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000187- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000195
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000196- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
197 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000198 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000199 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
200 merged into trunk.
201
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000202- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

207
208- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
209 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000210 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.

216 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
217
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000218- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
219 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000225 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
226 Prevents a deadlock.
227
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000228- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
229 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
230 default https port (443).
231
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000232- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
233 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
234 if the new process uses the threading module.
235
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000236Tests
237-----
238

240 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
241 have been added to test_warnings.
242
Martin v. Löwisd84fd952008-06-30 06:57:39 +0000243Build

273 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
274 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
275 bus error.
276
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca8919fe2008-06-16 19:12:42 +0000277- Issue #3100: Corrected a crash on deallocation of a subclassed weakref which

Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +0000605 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000606
607 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
608
609 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
610
611 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
612
613 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
614
615 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
616
617 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000667- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
668 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
669 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
670 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
671 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
672 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
673 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

735-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000736
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000737- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
738 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
739 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
740 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
741 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
742 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
743 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
744 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
745 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
746 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
747 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
748 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
749 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
750 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
751 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
752 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
753 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
754 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
755 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
756 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
757
758 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
759 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
760 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
761 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
762 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
763 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
764 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
765 access to the underlying socket used.
766
767 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
768 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
769 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000770
771 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000772 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000773 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
774 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
775
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000776 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
777 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1055
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001056- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1057 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1058 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1059 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1060 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1061 module is:
1062 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1063
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001064- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1065 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1066 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1067 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1068 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1069 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1070
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001071- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001077- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1078 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent

1090 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001091
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001092- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
