Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000309- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000310 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
311 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000312
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000313 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
314 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
315 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
316 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
317 exception, logged, etc.
318
319 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
320 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000321
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000322- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
323
324- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
325 with new-style classes.
326
327- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
328 classic classes.
329
330- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
331 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
332 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
333 to effectively use __index__.
334
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000335- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
336 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
337
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000338- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000340- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
341 sys.stdin is closed.
342
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000343- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
344 the Python dll again.
345
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000346- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
347 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
348 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
349 will be regenerated.
350
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000351- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored

353 immediately popped off the stack.
354
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000355- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

362 generated for generator expressions.
363
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000364- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
365 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
366 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
367 to be maintained manually as static string literal.

Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000377- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in

471
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000472- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000473 returned a long (see PEP 353).
474
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000475- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
476
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000477- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
478 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
479 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
480
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000481- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
482 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
483
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000484- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
485 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
486 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
487 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
488
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000489- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
490 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
491 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
492 the code to make that compiler happy again.
493
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000494- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

508
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000509- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000510 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000511 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

535
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000536- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done

545 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
546 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``

566
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000567- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
568
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000569- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
570 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
571 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
572 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
573 tuple pre-2.4.
574
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000575- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
576
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000577- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
578 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
579 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
580 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
581 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
582 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
583 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
584 charset and language parts).
585
586 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
587 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
588
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000589- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
590
591- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
592 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
593
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000594- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
595 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
596 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
597 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

Neal Norwitz9b0ca792006-08-02 06:46:21 +0000603- Patch #1519025 and bug #926423: If a KeyboardInterrupt occurs during
604 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
605 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
606
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000607- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more
608 openbsd target platforms.
609
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000610- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had
611 a memory leak, affecting pickles and deep copies.

620 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
621
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000622- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000623 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000624 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
625
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000626- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

638
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000639Tests
640-----
641
642- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
643 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
644 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
645
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000646- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
647 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when

656---
657
658- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
659 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
660
661- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
662 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000663 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

676 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
677
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000678- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
679 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
680
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000681- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
682 be released.

685 and atof().
686
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000687- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
688 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
689 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000690
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000691- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
692
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000693- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
694 now ints rather than longs.
695
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000696- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
697 started after line 256.
698
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000699- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
700 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
701 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
702 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
703 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
704 an extension.

721
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000722- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
723 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
724 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
725
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000726- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

751
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000752- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
753 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
754 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
755
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000756- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally
757 statement (bug #1509132).
758

763
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000764- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
765 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
766 now.
767
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000768Extension Modules
769-----------------
770
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000771- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
772 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
773 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000774
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000775- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
776 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
777
778- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
779 on non-Windows platforms.
780
781- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
782 integer or long, without range checking.
783
784- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
785 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
786 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
787
788- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
789 with the --without-threads option.
790
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000791- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
792 access, again.
793

806
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000807- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000808 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
809 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
810
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000811- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
812 with spaces in it.
813
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000814- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
815 of Tcl/Tk.
816
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000817- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

843-----------------
844
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000845- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
846 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
847 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
848
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000849- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
850 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
851
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000852- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
853
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000854- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000855 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000856
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000857- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
858 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
859 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
860 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
861 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
862
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000863- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
864 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
865
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000866- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
867 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
868 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
869 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
870 requested.
871
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000872- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
873 away like they were in Python 2.4.
874
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000875- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
876 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
877 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
878
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000879- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
880 Unicode 4.1.
881
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000882- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
883 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
884 fewer open calls on startup.
885
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000886- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
887 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
888 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
889 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
890 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
891
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000892- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
893 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
894 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
895 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
896
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000897- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
898
899- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
900 "base" parameter.
901
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000902- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
903 objects.
904
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000905- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
906 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
907 C library function.
908

912
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000913- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
914 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
915 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
916 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
917

921
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000922- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
923 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
924 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
925 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
926
927- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
928 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
929 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
930 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

960 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
961
962- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
963 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
964
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000965- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

988
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000989- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

1027
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001028- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1029 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1030 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1031 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1032 of the matching pair.

1049 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001050
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001051- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1052 for lookup.
1053
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001054- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1055 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1056 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1057 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1058 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1136-----------------
1137
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001138- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1139 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1140
1141 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1142 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1143 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1145 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1146
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001147- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1148
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001149- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1150 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1151 multiple times.
1152
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001153- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1154 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1155 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1156
1157- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1158 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1159
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001160- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1161 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1162 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001163 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001164 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001165
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001166 def __hash__(self):
1167 return id(self) # WRONG
1168
1169 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1170 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001171 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001172 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1173 necessarily so.
1174
1175- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001176 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001177 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001178 #1454844)
1179
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001180- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1181 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1182 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1183 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1184 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001185

1191
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001192- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1193 fails with an error condition.
1194
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001195- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1196
1197- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1198 the cachesize parameter.
1199
1200- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1201 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1202
1203- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1204 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001205
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001206- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1207 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1214 abusing errno.
1215
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001216- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1217 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1218 or exception is ignored).
1219

1230
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001231- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1232 .zip or .egg files.
1233
1234- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1235 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1236 in the filesystem or zip files.
1237
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001238- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

1299
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001300- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1301 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1302 the current Decimal context.
1303
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001304- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1305 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1306 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1307 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001333Core and builtins
1334-----------------
1335
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001336- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1337 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1338
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001339- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1340 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1341 end in .PYD.
1342
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001343- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1344 sys.stdout.encoding.
1345
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001346- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1347
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001348- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1349
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001350- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1351
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001352- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1353 5.4 and later versions.
1354
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001355- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1356 now gives a SyntaxError.
1357
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001358- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1359 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1360 (closes patch #1170323).
1361
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001362- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1363 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1364 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1365 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1366 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1367 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1368 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001369 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1370 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001371 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1372 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1373
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001374- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1375 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1376 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1377
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001378- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1379 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1380 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1381 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1382
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001383- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1384
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001385- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1386 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1387 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1388 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1389
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001390- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1391 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1392 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1393 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1394 absolute_import' is used.
1395
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001396- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1397 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1398 exceptions.
1399
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001400- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001401 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1402
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001403- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001404
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001405- Patch 1433928:
1406 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1407 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1408 KeyError.
1409
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001410- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1411 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1412 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001413 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001414 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1415 - The built-in file type.
1416 - The thread.LockType type.
1417 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1418 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1419 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001420
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001421- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1422 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1423
1424 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1425 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1426
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001427- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1428
1429- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1430 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1431 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1432 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1433 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001434
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001435- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1436 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1437 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1438
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001439- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1440 configure would break checking curses.h.
1441
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001442- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1443 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1444
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001445- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1446
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001447- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1448
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001449- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1450
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001451- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1452 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1453
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001454- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001456 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1457
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001458- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1459 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001460 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001461

1469
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001470- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001471 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001472 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001473
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001474- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1475 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1476 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1477 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1478 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1479
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001480- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1499
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001500- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001501 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001537- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1538 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1539 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001540 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001541 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1542 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1543 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1544 realloc.

1560
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001561- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1562 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1563 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1564

1567
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001568- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1569 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1570 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1571 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001572 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001576- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1577 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1578 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1579 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1580
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001581- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1582 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1583 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1584 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1585 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1586
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001587- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads

Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001854 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001855 module will not be built.

1882 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1883 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1884 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1885 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1886 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1887 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2161
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002162- Enhancements to the csv module:
2163
2164 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002165 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002166 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002167 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2168 reporting.
2169 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2170 dictates.
2171 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002172 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002173 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002174 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2175 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002176 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2177 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002178 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002179 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2180 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2181 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2182 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2183 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2184 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2185 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2186 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2187 without first creating a dialect class.
2188 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2189 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2190 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002191 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002192 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2193 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002194 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2195 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2196 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2197 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002198 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2199 This has been fixed.
2200
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002201- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2202 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2203 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2204 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2205
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002206- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2207
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002208- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2209 (Bug #951915).
2210
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002211- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2212 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2213 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002214 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002215
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002216- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2217
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002218- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2219 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2220
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002221- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2228
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002229- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2230
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002231- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2232 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2233 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2234
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002235- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002236 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002237
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002238- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2239 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2240 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2241
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002242- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2243 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2244 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002245
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002246- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002248
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002249- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2250 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2251
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002252- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2253 correctly.
2254
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002255- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2256 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2257 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2258 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2259 between two lines.
2260
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002261- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2262 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2263 handlers.
2264
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002265- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002266 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2267 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002268
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002269- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than

Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002280- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2281 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002282 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2283 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2284 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002311- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2312 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2313 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002314 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002316- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2317 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic

Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002322- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2323 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2324
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002325- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2326 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2327 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2328 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2329 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2330 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2331 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2332 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2333
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002334- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2335 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2336 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2337 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2340-----
2341
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002342- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2343 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2344 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2345 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2346 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2347 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2348 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2349 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2350 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2351 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2352
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002353- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

2358 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2359 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2360 mappings.
