321Core and builtins
322-----------------
323
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000324- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000325 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
326 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000327
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000328 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
329 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
330 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
331 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
332 exception, logged, etc.
333
334 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
335 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000336
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000337- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
338
339- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
340 with new-style classes.
341
342- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
343 classic classes.
344
345- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
346 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
347 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
348 to effectively use __index__.
349
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000350- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
351 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
352
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000353- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
354
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000355- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
356 sys.stdin is closed.
357
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000358- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
359 the Python dll again.
360
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000361- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
362 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
363 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
364 will be regenerated.
365
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000366- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
367 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
368 immediately popped off the stack.
369
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000370- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

375
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000376- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
377 generated for generator expressions.
378
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000379- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
380 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
381 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
382 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
383
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000384- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000385 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
386 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000387 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000388
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000389- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +0000390 an exception.
391
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000392- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000393 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000394 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
395 duplicate UUIDs.
396
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000397- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
398 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
399
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000400- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
401
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000402- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
403 file correctly even on Windows.
404
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +0000405- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
406 already been cleaned up.
407
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000408- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +0000409
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000410- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
411 str(exception) raised an exception.
412
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +0000413- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
414 generated for nested functions.

Georg Brandl3335a7a2006-08-14 21:42:55 +0000422- Patch #1535500: fix segfault in BZ2File.writelines and make sure it
423 raises the correct exceptions.
424
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +0000425- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The
426 '-no-stack-protector' compiler flag for OpenBSD has been removed.
427
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000428- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
429 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
430 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
431
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000432- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.
433 Passing float arguments to struct.pack when integers are expected
434 now triggers a DeprecationWarning.

486
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000487- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000488 returned a long (see PEP 353).
489
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000490- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
491
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000492- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
493 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
494 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
495
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000496- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
497 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
498
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000499- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
500 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
501 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
502 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
503
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000504- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
505 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
506 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
507 the code to make that compiler happy again.
508
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000509- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

520
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000521- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and

523
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000524- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000525 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000526 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000527
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000528- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000529 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000530 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
531 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.

540 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
541
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000542- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
543 KeyboardInterrupt.
544
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000545- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in

547
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000548- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
549 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
550
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000551- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000552 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000553 #1513611, and probably others.
554
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000555- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
556 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
557
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000558- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
559 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
560 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
561 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
562 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
563
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000564- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

568
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +0000569- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
570 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000571
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000572- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
573 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
574
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000575- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
576
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000577- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a

581
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000582- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
583
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000584- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
585 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
586 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
587 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
588 tuple pre-2.4.
589
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000590- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
591
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000592- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
593 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
594 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
595 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
596 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
597 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
598 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
599 charset and language parts).
600
601 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
602 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.

608
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000609- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
610 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
611 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
612 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

635 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
636
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000637- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

707
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000708- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are

713
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000714- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
715 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
716 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
717 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
718 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from

766
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000767- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
768 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
769 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
770
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000771- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

781 now.
782
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000783Extension Modules
784-----------------
785
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000786- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
787 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
788 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000789
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000790- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
791 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
792
793- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
794 on non-Windows platforms.
795
796- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
797 integer or long, without range checking.
798
799- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
800 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
801 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
802
803- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
804 with the --without-threads option.
805
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000806- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

821
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000822- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000823 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
824 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
825
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000826- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

857Core and builtins
858-----------------
859
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000860- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
861 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
862 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
863
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000864- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
865 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
866
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000867- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
868
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000869- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000870 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000871
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000872- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
873 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
874 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
875 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
876 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
877
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000878- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
879 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
880
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000881- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
882 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
883 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
884 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
885 requested.
886
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000887- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
888 away like they were in Python 2.4.
889
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000890- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
891 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
892 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
893
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000894- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
895 Unicode 4.1.
896
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000897- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
898 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
899 fewer open calls on startup.
900
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000901- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
902 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
903 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
904 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
905 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
906
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000907- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
908 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
909 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
910 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
911
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000912- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
913
914- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
915 "base" parameter.
916

918 objects.
919
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000920- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
921 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
922 C library function.
923

927
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000928- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
929 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
930 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
931 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
932
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000933- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.

936
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000937- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
938 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
939 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
940 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
941
942- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
943 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
944 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
945 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

960 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
961 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
962 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

975 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
976
977- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
978 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
979
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000980- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

982 Windows platforms).
983
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000984- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

1001 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1002 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1003
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001004- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1005 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1006 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1007
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001008- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

1042
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001043- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1044 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1045 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1046 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1047 of the matching pair.
1048
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001049- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1058
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001059- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1060 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1061 function when writing wrapper functions.
1062

1064 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001065
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001066- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1067 for lookup.
1068
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001069- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1070 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1071 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1072 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1073 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1150Core and builtins
1151-----------------
1152
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001153- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1154 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1155
1156 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1157 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1158 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1159 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1160 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1161
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001162- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1163
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001164- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1165 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1166 multiple times.
1167
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001168- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1169 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1170 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1171
1172- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1173 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1174
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001175- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1176 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1177 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001178 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001179 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001180
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001181 def __hash__(self):
1182 return id(self) # WRONG
1183
1184 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1185 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001186 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001187 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1188 necessarily so.
1189
1190- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001191 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001192 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001193 #1454844)
1194
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001195- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1196 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1197 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1198 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1199 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001200
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001201Extension Modules
1202-----------------
1203
Martin v. Löwis7e75f1a2006-04-15 08:35:59 +00001204- Patch #1191065: Fix preprocessor problems on systems where recvfrom
1205 is a macro.
1206
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001207- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1208 fails with an error condition.
1209
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001210- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1211
1212- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using

1229 abusing errno.
1230
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001231- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1232 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output

1314
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001315- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1316 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1317 the current Decimal context.
1318
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001319- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1320 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1321 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1322 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001348Core and builtins
1349-----------------
1350
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001351- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1352 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1353
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001354- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1355 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1356 end in .PYD.
1357
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001358- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1359 sys.stdout.encoding.
1360
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001361- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1362
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001363- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1364
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001365- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1366
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001367- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1368 5.4 and later versions.
1369
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001370- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1371 now gives a SyntaxError.
1372
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001373- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1374 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1375 (closes patch #1170323).
1376
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001377- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1378 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1379 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1380 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1381 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1382 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1383 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001384 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1385 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001386 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1387 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1388
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001389- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1390 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1391 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1392
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001393- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1394 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1395 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1396 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1397
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001398- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1399
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001400- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1401 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1402 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1403 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1404
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001405- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1406 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1407 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1408 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1409 absolute_import' is used.
1410
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001411- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1412 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1413 exceptions.
1414
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001415- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001416 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1417
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001418- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001419
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001420- Patch 1433928:
1421 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1422 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1423 KeyError.
1424
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001425- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1426 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1427 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001428 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001429 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1430 - The built-in file type.
1431 - The thread.LockType type.
1432 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1433 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1434 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001435
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001436- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1437 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1438
1439 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1440 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1441
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001442- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1443
1444- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1445 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1446 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1447 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1448 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001449
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001450- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1451 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1452 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1453
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001454- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1455 configure would break checking curses.h.
1456
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001457- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1458 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1459
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001460- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1461
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001462- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1463
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001464- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1465
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001466- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1467 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1468
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001469- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001471 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1472
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001473- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1474 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001475 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001476
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001477- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1478 now encodes backslash correctly.
1479
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001480- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1481
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001482- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001483 and long longs.
1484
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001485- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001486 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001487 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001488
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001489- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1490 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1491 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1492 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1493 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1494
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001495- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1514
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001515- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001516 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1517 was empty.
1518
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001519- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1520 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1521
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001522- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

1539
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001540- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1541 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1542
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001543- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1544 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1545 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1546
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001547- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1548
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001549- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1550 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1551
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001552- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1553 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1554 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001555 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001556 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1557 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1558 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1559 realloc.
1560
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001561- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1562 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1563
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001564- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1565 like their int counterparts.
1566
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001567- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1568 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1569 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1570 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1571 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1572
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001573- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1574 serializing floats.
1575
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001576- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1577 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1578 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1579
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001580- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1581 278.
1582
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001583- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1584 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1585 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1586 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001587 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001588 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001589 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001590
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001591- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1592 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1593 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1594 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1595
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001596- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1597 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1598 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1599 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1600 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1601
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001602- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1603 disabled caused a crash.
1604
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001605- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1606 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1607
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001608- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001609 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1610

1612
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001613- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001614 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1615 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1616 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001617

1630
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001631- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001632 an ferror() call.
1633
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001634- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001644
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001645- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1646 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1647 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1648
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001649- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1650 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1651 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1652
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001653- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1654 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1655 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1656 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1657 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001868 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001869 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001870 module will not be built.

1895
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001896- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1897 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1898 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1899 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1900 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1901 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1902 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2176
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002177- Enhancements to the csv module:
2178
2179 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002180 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002181 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002182 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2183 reporting.
2184 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2185 dictates.
2186 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002187 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002188 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002189 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2190 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002191 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2192 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002193 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002194 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2195 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2196 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2197 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2198 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2199 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2200 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2201 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2202 without first creating a dialect class.
2203 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2204 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2205 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002206 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002207 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2208 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002209 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2210 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2211 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2212 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002213 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2214 This has been fixed.
2215
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002216- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2217 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2218 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2219 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2220
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002221- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2222

2224 (Bug #951915).
2225
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002226- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2227 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2228 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002229 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002230

2232
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002233- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2234 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2235
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002236- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2243
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002244- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2245
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002246- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2247 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2248 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2249
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002250- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002251 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002252
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002253- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2254 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2255 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2256
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002257- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2258 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2259 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002260
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002261- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
2262 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002263
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002264- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2265 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2266
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002267- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2268 correctly.
2269
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002270- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2271 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2272 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2273 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2274 between two lines.
2275
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002276- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2277 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2278 handlers.
2279
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002280- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002281 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct

2285 considering it exactly like a '*'.
2286
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00002287- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
2288 ``encodings.aliases``.

2294
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002295- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2296 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002297 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2298 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2299 special classes that use unicode.

2328 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during

Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002337- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is

2339
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002340- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2341 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2342 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2343 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2344 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2345 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2346 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2347 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2348
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002349- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2350 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2351 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2352 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2355-----
2356
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002357- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2358 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2359 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2360 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2361 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2362 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2363 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2364 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2365 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2366 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2367
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002368- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

2374 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
