8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000015- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
16 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
17 and introducing s*.
18
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000019- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
20 object was stored in the freelist.
21
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000022- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
23 ValueError consistently across platforms.
24
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000025- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
26 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
27 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
28
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000029- Apply security patches from Apple.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000031- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
32 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
33
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000034- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
35 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000037- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
38 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
39 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
40
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000041- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
42 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
43 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
44 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
45 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
46 failed have been fixed.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000048Library
49-------
50
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000051- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
52 in a redirect.
53
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000054- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000055 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000056
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000057- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
58 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
59
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000060- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
61 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
62 regular expression.
63
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000064- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
65 thread-safe.
66
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000067- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
68 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
69 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
70
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +000071- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
72
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +000073- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
74 menu entries were not deleted.
75
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +000076- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
77 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
78
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +000079- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
80 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
81
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000082- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
83 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
84 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
85
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000086- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
87 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
88 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
89
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000090- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
91 the reload() built-in has been removed.
92
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000093- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +000094 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +000095 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
96 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
97 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
98 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
99 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000100
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000101- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
102 raised an AttributeError.
103
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000104- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000105 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
106 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000107
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000108- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
109 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
110
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000111- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
112
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000113- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
114 on a closed shelf.
115
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +0000116- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
117
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000118- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
119
120- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
121 invalid arguments.
122
123- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
124 with None arguments.
125
126- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
127 configuration files.
128
129- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
130
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000131- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
132 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
133 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
134
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000135- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
136 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
137 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
138
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000139Build
140-----

142- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
143
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000144Documentation
145-------------
146
147- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
148 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
149 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
150 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

157
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000158Core and Builtins
159-----------------
160
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000161- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
162 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
163 an integer using operator.index().
164
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000165- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
166 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
167
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000168- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
169 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
170
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000171- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
172 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
173 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
174
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000175- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
176 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
177 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
178 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
179 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
180 level.
181
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000182- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
183 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
184 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
185 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
186 all imports from that module to fail.
187
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000188- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
189 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
190 new-style classes.
191
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000192- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
193 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
194 another file in sys.stdout.
195
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000196- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
197 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
198 another thread's dictionary.
199
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000200- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
201 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
202 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
203 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
204 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
205 10, -1).
206
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000207- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
208 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
209 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000210
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000211- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
212 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
213 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000214
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000215Library
216-------
217
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000218- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
219 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
220 error when they failed.
221
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000222- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
223
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000224- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
225
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000226- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
227

229
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000230- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
231 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
232
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000233- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000234
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000235- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
236 a valid dlerror() message.
237
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000238- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
239 incomplete structure was created.
240

242
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +0000243- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
244
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000245- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000246
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000247- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
248 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000249 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000250 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
251 merged into trunk.
252
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000253- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
254

256
257- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
258
259- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
260 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000261 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000262
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000263- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000264 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000265
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000266- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
267 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
268
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000269- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
270 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000275- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000276 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
277 Prevents a deadlock.
278
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000279- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
280 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
281 default https port (443).
282
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000283- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
284 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
285 if the new process uses the threading module.
286
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000287Tests
288-----
289
290- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
291 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
292 have been added to test_warnings.

719 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
720 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

786-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000787
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000788- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
789 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
790 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
791 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
792 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
793 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
794 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
795 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
796 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
797 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
798 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
799 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
800 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
801 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
802 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
803 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
804 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
805 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
806 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
807 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
808
809 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
810 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
811 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
812 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
813 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
814 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
815 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
816 access to the underlying socket used.
817
818 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
819 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
820 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000821
822 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000823 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

825 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
826
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000827 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001100- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1101

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001103
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001104- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001105 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1106
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001107- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1108 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1109 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1110 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1111 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1112 module is:
1113 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1114
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001115- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1116 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1117 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1118 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1119 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1120 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1121
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001122- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1123 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1124 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1125 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1126 PyObject_Format().
1127
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001128- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1129 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1130 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001131
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001132- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001133 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1134 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001135
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001136- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
1137 real or imaginary part.
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +00001138
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001139- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1140 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1141 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001142
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001143- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1144 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
