8=============================================
9
10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000015- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
16 error.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000018- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
19 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
20 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
21 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
22
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000023- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
24 a unicode argument.
25
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000026- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
27
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000028- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000029 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000030 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
31
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000032- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000033 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
34 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
35 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
36 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
37 type object.
38
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000039- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
40

44
45- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
46
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000047- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
48 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
49

51 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
52
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000053- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
54 ``__delslice__``.
55
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000056- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
57 library targets in the Makefile.
58
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000059- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
60 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
61 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000154What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
155================================
156
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000157*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000158
159Core and Builtins
160-----------------
161
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000162- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
163 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
164 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
165 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
166 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
167 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
168 default.
169
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000170- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
171 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
172
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000173- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
174 value again.
175
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000176- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
177 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
178 and introducing s*.
179
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000180- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
181 object was stored in the freelist.
182
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000183- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
184 ValueError consistently across platforms.
185
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000186- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
187 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
188 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
189
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000190- Apply security patches from Apple.
191
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000192- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
193 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
194
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000195- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
196 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
197
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000198- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
199 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
200 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
201
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000202- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
203 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
204 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
205 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
206 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
207 failed have been fixed.
208
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000209Library
210-------
211
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000212- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
213
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000214- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
215 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
216
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000217- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
218 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
219 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
220
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000221- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
222 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
223 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
224 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
225 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
226 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
227
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000228- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
229 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
230
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000231- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
232
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000233- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
234
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000235- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
236
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000237- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
238 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
239
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000240- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
241 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
242
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000243- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
244 in a redirect.
245
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000246- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000247 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000248
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000249- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
250 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
251
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000252- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
253 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
254 regular expression.
255
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000256- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
257 thread-safe.
258
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000259- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
260 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
261 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
262
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000263- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
264
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000265- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
266 menu entries were not deleted.
267
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000268- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
269 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
270
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000271- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
272 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
273
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000274- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
275 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
276 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
277
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000278- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
279 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
280 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
281
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000282- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
283 the reload() built-in has been removed.

354-----------------
355
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000356- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
357 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
358 an integer using operator.index().
359
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000360- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
361 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
362
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000363- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
364 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
365
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000366- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
367 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
368 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
369
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000370- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
371 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
372 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
373 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
374 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
375 level.
376
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000377- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
378 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
379 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
380 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
381 all imports from that module to fail.
382
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000383- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
384 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
385 new-style classes.

390
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000391- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

393 another thread's dictionary.
394
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000395- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
396 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
397 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
398 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
399 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
400 10, -1).
401
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000402- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
403 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
404 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000442- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
443 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000444 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000445 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000916- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
917 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
918 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
919 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
920 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
921 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
922 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
923 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000986- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
987 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
988 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
989 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
990 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
991 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
992 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
993 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
994 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
995 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
996 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
997 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
998 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
999 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1000 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1001 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1002 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1003 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1004 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1005 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1006
1007 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1008 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1009 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1010 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1011 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1012 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1013 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1014 access to the underlying socket used.
1015
1016 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1017 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1018 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001019
1020 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001021 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1023 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1024
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001025 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1026 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1304
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001305- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1306 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1307 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1308 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1309 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1310 module is:
1311 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1312
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001313- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1314 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1315 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1316 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1317 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1318 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1319
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001320- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1321 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1322 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1323 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1324 PyObject_Format().
1325
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001326- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1327 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1328 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001329
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001330- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1338 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1339 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001340
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001341- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1342 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1343 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001344
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001345- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1346 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1347

1354
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001355- Issue #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty()
1356 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1357 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001358
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001359- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001371- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1372 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1373 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001374
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001375- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1376 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1377 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1378 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001559- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1560 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1561 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001564 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
