10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000015- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
16 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
17 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
18 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
19 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
20 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
21 64bit values.
22
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000023- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
24 error.
25
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000026- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
27 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
28 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
29 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000031- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
32 a unicode argument.
33
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000034- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
35
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000036- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000037 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000038 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
39
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000040- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000041 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
42 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
43 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
44 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
45 type object.
46
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000047- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
48
49- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
50
51- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
52
53- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
54
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000055- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
56 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
57
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000058- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
59 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
60
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000061- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
62 ``__delslice__``.
63
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000064- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
65 library targets in the Makefile.
66
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000067- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
68 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
69 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
70

164
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000165*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000166
167Core and Builtins
168-----------------
169
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000170- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
171 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
172 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
173 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
174 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
175 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
176 default.
177
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000178- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
179 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
180
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000181- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
182 value again.
183
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000184- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
185 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
186 and introducing s*.
187
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000188- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
189 object was stored in the freelist.
190
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000191- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
192 ValueError consistently across platforms.
193
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000194- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
195 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
196 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
197
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000198- Apply security patches from Apple.
199
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000200- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
201 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
202
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000203- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
204 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
205
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000206- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
207 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
208 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
209
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000210- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
211 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
212 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
213 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
214 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
215 failed have been fixed.
216
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000217Library
218-------
219
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000220- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
221
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000222- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
223 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
224
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000225- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
226 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
227 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
228
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000229- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
230 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
231 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
232 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
233 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
234 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
235
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000236- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
237 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
238
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000239- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
240
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000241- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
242
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000243- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
244
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000245- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
246 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
247
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000248- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
249 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
250
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000251- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
252 in a redirect.
253
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000254- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000255 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000256
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000257- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
258 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
259
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000260- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
261 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
262 regular expression.
263
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000264- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
265 thread-safe.
266
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000267- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
268 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
269 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
270
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000271- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
272
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000273- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
274 menu entries were not deleted.
275
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000276- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
277 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
278
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000279- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
280 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
281
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000282- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
283 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
284 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
285
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000286- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
287 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
288 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
289
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000290- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
291 the reload() built-in has been removed.

298 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
299 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000300
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000301- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
302 raised an AttributeError.
303

363
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000364- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
365 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
366 an integer using operator.index().
367
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000368- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
369 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
370
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000371- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
372 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
373
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000374- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
375 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
376 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
377
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000378- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
379 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
380 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
381 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
382 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
383 level.
384
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000385- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
386 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
387 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
388 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
389 all imports from that module to fail.
390
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000391- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
392 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
393 new-style classes.
394
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000395- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

397 another file in sys.stdout.
398
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000399- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

401 another thread's dictionary.
402
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000403- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
404 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
405 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
406 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
407 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
408 10, -1).
409
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000410- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000450- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
451 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000452 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000453 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000924- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
925 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
926 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
927 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
928 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
929 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
930 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
931 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000994- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
995 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
996 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
997 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
998 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
999 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1000 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1001 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1002 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1003 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1004 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1005 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1006 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1007 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1008 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1009 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1010 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1011 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1012 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1013 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1014
1015 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1016 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1017 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1018 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1019 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1020 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1021 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1022 access to the underlying socket used.
1023
1024 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1025 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1026 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001027
1028 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001029 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1031 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1032
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001033 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1034 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1312
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001313- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1314 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1315 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1316 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1317 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1318 module is:
1319 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1320
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001321- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1322 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1323 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1324 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1325 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1326 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1327
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001328- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1329 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1330 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1331 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1332 PyObject_Format().
1333
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001334- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1335 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1336 state.

1347 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001348
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001349- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1365 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001366

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001567- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1568 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1569 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

1571 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001572 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001574
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001575- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
