323Core and builtins
324-----------------
325
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000326- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000327 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
328 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000329
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000330 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
331 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
332 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
333 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
334 exception, logged, etc.
335
336 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
337 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000338
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000339- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
340
341- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
342 with new-style classes.
343
344- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
345 classic classes.
346
347- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
348 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
349 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
350 to effectively use __index__.
351
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000352- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
353 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
354
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000355- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
356
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000357- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
358 sys.stdin is closed.
359
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000360- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
361 the Python dll again.
362
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000363- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
364 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
365 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
366 will be regenerated.
367
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000368- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
369 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
370 immediately popped off the stack.
371
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000372- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

377
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000378- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
379 generated for generator expressions.
380
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000381- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
382 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
383 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
384 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
385
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000386- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000387 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
388 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000389 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000390
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000391- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +0000392 an exception.
393
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000394- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000395 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000396 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
397 duplicate UUIDs.
398
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000399- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
400 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
401
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000402- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
403
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000404- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
405 file correctly even on Windows.
406
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +0000407- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
408 already been cleaned up.
409
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000410- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +0000411
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000412- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
413 str(exception) raised an exception.
414
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +0000415- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
416 generated for nested functions.

Georg Brandl3335a7a2006-08-14 21:42:55 +0000424- Patch #1535500: fix segfault in BZ2File.writelines and make sure it
425 raises the correct exceptions.
426
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +0000427- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The
428 '-no-stack-protector' compiler flag for OpenBSD has been removed.
429
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000430- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
431 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
432 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
433
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000434- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.
435 Passing float arguments to struct.pack when integers are expected
436 now triggers a DeprecationWarning.

488
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000489- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000490 returned a long (see PEP 353).
491
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000492- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
493
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000494- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
495 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
496 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
497
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000498- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
499 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
500
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000501- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
502 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
503 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
504 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
505
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000506- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
507 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
508 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
509 the code to make that compiler happy again.
510
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000511- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

522
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000523- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and

525
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000526- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000527 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000528 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000529
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000530- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000531 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000532 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
533 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.

542 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
543
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000544- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
545 KeyboardInterrupt.
546
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000547- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in

549
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000550- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
551 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
552
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000553- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000554 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000555 #1513611, and probably others.
556

558 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
559
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000560- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
561 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
562 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
563 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
564 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
565
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000566- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

570
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +0000571- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with

Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000573
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000574- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback

583
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000584- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
585
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000586- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
587 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
588 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
589 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
590 tuple pre-2.4.
591
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000592- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
593
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000594- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
595 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
596 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
597 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
598 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
599 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
600 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
601 charset and language parts).
602
603 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
604 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.

612 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
613 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
614 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

637 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
638
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000639- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

715
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000716- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
717 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
718 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
719 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
720 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from

768
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000769- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
770 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
771 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
772
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000773- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

783 now.
784
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000785Extension Modules
786-----------------
787
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000788- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
789 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
790 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000791
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000792- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
793 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
794
795- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
796 on non-Windows platforms.
797
798- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
799 integer or long, without range checking.
800
801- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
802 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
803 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
804
805- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
806 with the --without-threads option.
807
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000808- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

823
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000824- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000825 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
826 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
827
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000828- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

859Core and builtins
860-----------------
861
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000862- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
863 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
864 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
865
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000866- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
867 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
868
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000869- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
870
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000871- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000872 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000873
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000874- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
875 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
876 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
877 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
878 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
879
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000880- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
881 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
882
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000883- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
884 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
885 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
886 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
887 requested.
888
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000889- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
890 away like they were in Python 2.4.
891
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000892- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
893 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
894 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
895
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000896- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
897 Unicode 4.1.
898
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000899- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
900 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
901 fewer open calls on startup.
902
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000903- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
904 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
905 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
906 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
907 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
908
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000909- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
910 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
911 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
912 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
913
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000914- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
915
916- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
917 "base" parameter.
918
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000919- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
920 objects.
921
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000922- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
923 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
924 C library function.
925
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000926- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
927
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000928- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
929
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000930- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
931 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
932 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
933 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
934
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000935- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.

938
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000939- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
940 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
941 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
942 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
943
944- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
945 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
946 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
947 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

962 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
963 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
964 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

977 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
978
979- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
980 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
981
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000982- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

984 Windows platforms).
985
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000986- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
987 may deadlock.

1003 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1004 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1005
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001006- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1007 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1008 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1009
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001010- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

1044
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001045- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1046 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1047 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1048 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1049 of the matching pair.

1058
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00001059- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
1060
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001061- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1062 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1063 function when writing wrapper functions.
1064

1066 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001067
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001068- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1069 for lookup.
1070
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001071- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1072 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1073 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1074 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1075 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1076

1095 tarfiles.
1096
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001097- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1150*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
1151
1152Core and builtins
1153-----------------
1154
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001155- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1156 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1157
1158 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1159 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1160 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1161 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1162 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1163
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001164- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1165
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001166- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1167 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1168 multiple times.
1169
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001170- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1171 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1172 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1173
1174- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1175 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1176
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001177- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1178 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1179 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001180 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001181 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001182
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001183 def __hash__(self):
1184 return id(self) # WRONG
1185
1186 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1187 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001188 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001189 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1190 necessarily so.
1191
1192- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001193 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001194 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001195 #1454844)
1196
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001197- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1198 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1199 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1200 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1201 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001202
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001203Extension Modules
1204-----------------
1205
Martin v. Löwis7e75f1a2006-04-15 08:35:59 +00001206- Patch #1191065: Fix preprocessor problems on systems where recvfrom
1207 is a macro.
1208
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001209- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1210 fails with an error condition.
1211
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001212- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

1316
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001317- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1318 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1319 the current Decimal context.
1320
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001321- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1322 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1323 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1324 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1351-----------------
1352
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001353- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1354 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1355
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001356- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1357 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1358 end in .PYD.
1359
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001360- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1361 sys.stdout.encoding.
1362
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001363- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1364
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001365- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1366
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001367- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1368
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001369- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1370 5.4 and later versions.
1371
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001372- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1373 now gives a SyntaxError.
1374
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001375- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1376 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1377 (closes patch #1170323).
1378
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001379- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1380 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1381 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1382 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1383 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1384 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1385 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001386 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1387 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001388 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1389 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1390
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001391- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1392 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1393 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1394
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001395- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1396 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1397 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1398 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1399
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001400- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1401
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001402- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1403 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1404 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1405 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1406
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001407- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1408 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1409 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1410 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1411 absolute_import' is used.
1412
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001413- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1414 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1415 exceptions.
1416
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001417- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001418 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1419
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001420- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001421
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001422- Patch 1433928:
1423 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1424 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1425 KeyError.
1426
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001427- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1428 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1429 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001430 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001431 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1432 - The built-in file type.
1433 - The thread.LockType type.
1434 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1435 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1436 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001437
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001438- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1439 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1440
1441 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1442 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1443
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001444- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1445
1446- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1447 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1448 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1449 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1450 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001451
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001452- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1453 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1454 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1455
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001456- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1457 configure would break checking curses.h.
1458
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001459- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1460 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1461
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001462- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1463
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001464- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1465
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001466- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1467
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001468- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1469 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1470
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001471- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001473 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1474
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001475- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1476 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001477 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001478
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001479- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1480 now encodes backslash correctly.
1481
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001482- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1483
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001484- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001485 and long longs.
1486
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001487- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001488 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001489 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001490
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001491- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1492 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1493 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1494 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1495 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1496

1516
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001517- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001518 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1519 was empty.
1520
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001521- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1522 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1523

1541
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001542- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1543 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1544
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001545- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1546 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1547 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1548
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001549- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1550

1552 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1553
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001554- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1555 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1556 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001557 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001558 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1559 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1560 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1561 realloc.
1562
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001563- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1565
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001566- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1567 like their int counterparts.
1568
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001569- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1570 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1571 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1572 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1573 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1574
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001575- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1576 serializing floats.
1577
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001578- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1579 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1580 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1581
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001582- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1583 278.
1584
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001585- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1586 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1587 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1588 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001589 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001590 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001591 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001592
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001593- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1594 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1595 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1596 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1597
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001598- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1599 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1600 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1601 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1602 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1603
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001604- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1605 disabled caused a crash.
1606
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001607- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1608 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1609
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001610- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

1614
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001615- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001616 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1617 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1618 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001633- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001634 an ferror() call.
1635
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001636- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001647- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1648 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1649 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1650
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001651- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1652 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1653 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1654
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001655- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1656 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1657 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1658 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1659 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001870 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001871 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001872 module will not be built.

1899 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1900 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1901 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1902 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1903 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1904 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2178
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002179- Enhancements to the csv module:
2180
2181 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002182 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002183 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002184 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2185 reporting.
2186 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2187 dictates.
2188 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002189 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002190 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002191 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2192 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002193 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2194 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002195 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002196 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2197 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2198 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2199 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2200 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2201 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2202 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2203 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2204 without first creating a dialect class.
2205 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2206 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2207 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002208 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002209 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2210 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002211 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2212 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2213 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2214 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002215 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2216 This has been fixed.
2217
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002218- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2219 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2220 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2221 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2222
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002223- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2224
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002225- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2226 (Bug #951915).
2227
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002228- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2229 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2230 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002231 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002232
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002233- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2234
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002235- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2236 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2237
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002238- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2245
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002246- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2247
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002248- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2249 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2250 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2251
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002252- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002253 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002254
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002255- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2256 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2257 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2258
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002259- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2260 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2261 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002262
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002263- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
2264 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002265
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002266- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2267 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2268
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002269- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2270 correctly.
2271
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002272- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2273 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2274 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2275 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2276 between two lines.
2277
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002278- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2279 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2280 handlers.
2281
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002282- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002283 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2284 encoding instead of a unicode string.

2287 considering it exactly like a '*'.
2288
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00002289- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
2290 ``encodings.aliases``.

2296
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002297- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2298 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002299 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2300 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2301 special classes that use unicode.

2330 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during

Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002339- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2340 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2341
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002342- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2343 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2344 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2345 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2346 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2347 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2348 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2349 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2350
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002351- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2352 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2353 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2354 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2357-----
2358
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002359- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2360 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2361 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2362 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2363 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2364 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2365 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2366 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2367 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2368 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2369
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002370- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

2376 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
