16 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
17 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
18 it correctly refers to the initial element.

115-----------------
116
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000117- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
118
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000119- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
120 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
121 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
122 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
123 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
124 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
125 64bit values.
126
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000127- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
128 error.
129
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000130- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
131 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
132 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
133 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
134
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000135- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
136 a unicode argument.
137
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000138- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
139
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000140- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000141 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000142 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
143
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000144- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000145 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
146 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
147 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
148 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
149 type object.
150
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000151- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
152
153- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
154
155- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
156
157- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
158
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000159- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
160 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
161
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000162- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
163 ``__delslice__``.
164
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000165- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
166 library targets in the Makefile.
167
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000168- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
169 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
170 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

186
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000187- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
188 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
189 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

290Core and Builtins
291-----------------
292
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000293- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
294 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
295 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
296 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
297 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
298 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
299 default.
300
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000301- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
302 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
303
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000304- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
305 value again.
306
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000307- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
308 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
309 and introducing s*.
310
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000311- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
312 object was stored in the freelist.
313
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000314- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
315 ValueError consistently across platforms.
316
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000317- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
318 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
319 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
320
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000321- Apply security patches from Apple.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000323- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
324 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
325
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000326- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
327 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
328
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000329- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
330 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
331 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
332
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000333- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
334 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
335 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
336 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
337 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
338 failed have been fixed.

347
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000348- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
349 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
350 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
351
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000352- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
353 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
354 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
355 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
356 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,

358
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000359- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things

401
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000402- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise

404
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000405- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"

407 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
408

453
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000454- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
455 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
456 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
457
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000458- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

481
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000482*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
483
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000484Core and Builtins
485-----------------
486
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000487- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
488 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
489 an integer using operator.index().
490
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000491- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
492 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
493
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000494- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
495 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
496
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000497- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
498 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
499 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
500
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000501- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
502 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
503 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
504 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
505 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
506 level.
507
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000508- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
509 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
510 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
511 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
512 all imports from that module to fail.
513
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000514- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
515 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
516 new-style classes.
517
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000518- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
519 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
520 another file in sys.stdout.
521
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000522- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
523 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
524 another thread's dictionary.
525
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000526- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
527 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
528 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
529 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
530 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
531 10, -1).
532
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000533- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
534 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
535 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000536
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000537- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
538 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
539 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000540

545 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
546 error when they failed.
547
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000548- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

555
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000556- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
557 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
558
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000559- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

563
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000564- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000572
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000573- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
574 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000575 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000576 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
577 merged into trunk.
578
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000579- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000590 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000591
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000592- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
593 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
594
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000595- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

603 Prevents a deadlock.
604
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000605- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the

607 default https port (443).
608
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000609- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001117- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1118 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1119 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1120 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1121 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1122 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1123 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1124 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1125 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1126 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1127 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1128 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1129 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1130 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1131 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1132 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1133 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1134 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1135 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1136 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1137
1138 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1139 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1140 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1141 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1142 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1143 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1144 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1145 access to the underlying socket used.
1146
1147 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1148 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1149 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001150
1151 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1445 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1446 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1447 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1448 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1449 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1450

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001690- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1691 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1692 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1693 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1694 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001695 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
