Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000386- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
387 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
388 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
389 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
390 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
391 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
392 64bit values.

557Core and Builtins
558-----------------
559
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000560- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
561 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
562 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
563 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
564 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
565 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
566 default.
567
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000568- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
569 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
570
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000571- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
572 value again.
573
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000574- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
575 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
576 and introducing s*.
577
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000578- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
579 object was stored in the freelist.
580
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000581- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
582 ValueError consistently across platforms.
583
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000584- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
585 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
586 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
587
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000588- Apply security patches from Apple.
589
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000590- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
591 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
592
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000593- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
594 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
595
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000596- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
597 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
598 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
599
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000600- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
601 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
602 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
603 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
604 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
605 failed have been fixed.

611
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000612- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
613 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
614
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000615- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
616 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
617 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
618
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000619- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
620 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000751Core and Builtins
752-----------------
753
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000754- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
755 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
756 an integer using operator.index().
757
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000758- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
759 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
760
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000761- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
762 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
763
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000764- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
765 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
766 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
767
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000768- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
769 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
770 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
771 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
772 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
773 level.
774
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000775- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
776 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
777 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
778 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
779 all imports from that module to fail.
780
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000781- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
782 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
783 new-style classes.
784
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000785- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
786 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
787 another file in sys.stdout.
788
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000789- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
790 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
791 another thread's dictionary.
792
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000793- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
794 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
795 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
796 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
797 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
798 10, -1).
799
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000800- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
801 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
802 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000803
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000804- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

813 error when they failed.
814
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000815- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000840- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
841 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000842 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000843 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
844 merged into trunk.

861

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001314- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the

1316 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1317 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1382-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001383
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001384- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1385 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1386 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1387 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1388 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1389 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1390 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1391 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1392 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1393 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1394 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1395 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1396 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1397 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1398 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1399 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1400 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1401 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1402 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1403 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1404
1405 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1406 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1407 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1408 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1409 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1410 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1411 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1412 access to the underlying socket used.
1413
1414 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1415 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1416 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001417
1418 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001419 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1422
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001423 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

1482 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'

1702
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001703- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1704 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1705 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1706 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1707 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1708 module is:
1709 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1710
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001711- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1712 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1713 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1714 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1715 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1716 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1717
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001718- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1719 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1720 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1721 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1722 PyObject_Format().
1723
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001724- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1725 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1726 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001727
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001728- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
