14
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000015- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
16 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
17 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
18
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000019- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
20 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
21 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
22 it correctly refers to the initial element.

129-----------------
130
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000131- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
132
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000133- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
134 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
135 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
136 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
137 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
138 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
139 64bit values.
140
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000141- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
142 error.
143
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000144- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
145 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
146 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
147 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
148
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000149- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
150 a unicode argument.
151
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000152- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
153
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000154- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000155 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000156 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
157
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000158- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000159 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
160 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
161 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
162 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
163 type object.
164
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000165- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
166
167- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
168
169- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
170
171- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
172
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000173- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
174 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
175
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000176- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
177 ``__delslice__``.
178
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000179- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
180 library targets in the Makefile.
181
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000182- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
183 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
184 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
185

193
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000194- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
195 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.

Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000201- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
202 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
203 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000303
304Core and Builtins
305-----------------
306
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000307- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
308 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
309 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
310 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
311 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
312 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
313 default.
314
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000315- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
316 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
317
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000318- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
319 value again.
320
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000321- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
322 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,

326 object was stored in the freelist.
327
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000328- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
329 ValueError consistently across platforms.
330
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000331- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
332 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
333 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
334
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000335- Apply security patches from Apple.
336
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000337- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
338 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
339
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000340- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
341 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
342
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000343- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
344 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
345 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
346
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000347- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
348 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
349 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
350 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
351 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
352 failed have been fixed.

361
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000362- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
363 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
364 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
365
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000366- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
367 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
368 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
369 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
370 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
371 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
372
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000373- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things

384
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000385- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()

399 regular expression.
400
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000401- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now

414 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
415
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000416- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise

418
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000419- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
420 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
421 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
422
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000423- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that

467
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000468- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
469 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
470 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
471
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000472- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000496*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
497
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000498Core and Builtins
499-----------------
500
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000501- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
502 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
503 an integer using operator.index().
504
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000505- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
506 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
507
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000508- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
509 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
510
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000511- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
512 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
513 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
514
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000515- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
516 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
517 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
518 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
519 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
520 level.
521
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000522- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
523 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
524 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
525 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
526 all imports from that module to fail.
527
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000528- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
529 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
530 new-style classes.
531
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000532- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
533 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
534 another file in sys.stdout.
535
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000536- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
537 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
538 another thread's dictionary.
539
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000540- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
541 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
542 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
543 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
544 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
545 10, -1).
546
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000547- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
548 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
549 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000550
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000551- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
552 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
553 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000554

556-------
557
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000558- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
559 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
560 error when they failed.
561
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000562- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

569
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000570- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
571 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
572
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000573- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000574
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000575- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
576 a valid dlerror() message.
577
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000578- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000586
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000587- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
588 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000589 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000590 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
591 merged into trunk.
592
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000593- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

598
599- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
600 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000601 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000602
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000603- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000604 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000605
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000606- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
607 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
608
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000609- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
610 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000616 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
617 Prevents a deadlock.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001131- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1132 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1133 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1134 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1135 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1136 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1137 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1138 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1139 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1140 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1141 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1142 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1143 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1144 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1145 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1146 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1147 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1148 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1149 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1150 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1151
1152 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1153 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1154 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1155 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1156 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1157 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1158 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1159 access to the underlying socket used.
1160
1161 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1162 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1163 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001164
1165 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001450- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1451 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1452 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1453 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1454 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1455 module is:
1456 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1457
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001458- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1459 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1460 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1461 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1462 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1463 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1464
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001465- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1466 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1467 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1468 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1469 PyObject_Format().
1470

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001704- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1705 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1706 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1707 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1708 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001709 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
