71 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
72
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000073- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
74 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
75 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +000076 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
77 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +000078 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
79 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
80 DeprecationWarning.

Thomas Hellerbf027c42008-04-24 18:14:19 +0000102 reference to themselves.
103
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +0000104- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
105 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
106 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +0000107

122 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
123 build documentation for more information.
124
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000125- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
126 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
127 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
128 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
129
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000130- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
131 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
132 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
133
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +0000134- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
135 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
136 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
137
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000138Tests
139-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000140- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
141 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
142 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
143 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
144 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
145 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
146 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
147 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
148 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
149 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
150 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
151 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
152 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
153 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
154 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
155 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
156 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
157 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
158
159 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
160 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
161 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
162 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
163 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
164 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
165 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
166
167 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
168 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
169
170 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
171 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
172 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
173 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
174
175 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
176 run in parallel without issue.

182
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000183- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
184 gcc is used as compiler.
185
Ronald Oussoren580c7fe2008-05-02 19:45:11 +0000186- Issue #2573: On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework
187 with a different name using --with-framework-name=NAME.
188

190-----
191
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000192- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
193 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
194 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
195 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
196
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000197- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k
198 warnings.

439
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000440- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
441 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
442 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
443 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
444 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
445 module is:
446 from future_builtins import hex, oct
447
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000448- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
449 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
450 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
451 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
452 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
453 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
454
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000455- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
456 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
457 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
458 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
459 PyObject_Format().

Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000472 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
473 OS earlier.
474

477
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000478- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
479 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
480
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000481- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

505 generator.
506
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000507- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000508 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000509 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the

Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000611- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
612 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
613 shifts from ints to longs.
614
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000615- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
616 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
617 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
618 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
619 respectively, fixed the issues.
620
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000621- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
622 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
623 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
624 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.

633 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
634 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
635 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
636 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000683- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
684 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
685 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
686 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
687 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000688 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
689 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000690
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000691- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
692 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
693 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now

2039-----
2040
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002041- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
2042 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper

2044
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002045- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002046 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002047 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2048

2059
2060- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2061 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2062 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2063 results with huge strings.
2064
2065- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2066 and Py_REFCNT.
2067
