8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +000015- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
16 value again.
17
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000018- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
19 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
20 and introducing s*.
21
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000022- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
23 object was stored in the freelist.
24
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000025- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
26 ValueError consistently across platforms.
27
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000028- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
29 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
30 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
31
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000032- Apply security patches from Apple.
33
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000034- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
35 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
36
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000037- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
38 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
39
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000040- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
41 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
42 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
43
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000044- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
45 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
46 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
47 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
48 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
49 failed have been fixed.
50
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000051Library
52-------
53
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +000054- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
55 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
56 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
57
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +000058- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
59 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
60 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
61 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
62 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
63 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
64
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +000065- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
66 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
67
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +000068- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
69
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +000070- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
71
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +000072- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
73
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +000074- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
75 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
76
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +000077- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
78 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
79
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000080- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
81 in a redirect.
82
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000083- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000084 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000085
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000086- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
87 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
88
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000089- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
90 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
91 regular expression.
92
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000093- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
94 thread-safe.
95
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000096- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
97 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
98 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
99
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000100- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
101
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000102- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
103 menu entries were not deleted.
104
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000105- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
106 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
107
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000108- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
109 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
110
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000111- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
112 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
113 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
114
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000115- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
116 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
117 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
118
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000119- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
120 the reload() built-in has been removed.
121
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000122- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000123 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000124 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
125 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
126 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
127 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
128 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000129
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000130- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
131 raised an AttributeError.
132
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000133- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000134 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
135 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000136
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000137- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
138 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
139
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000140- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
141
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000142- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
143 on a closed shelf.
144
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +0000145- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
146
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000147- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
148
149- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
150 invalid arguments.
151
152- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
153 with None arguments.
154
155- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
156 configuration files.
157
158- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
159
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000160- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
161 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
162 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
163
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000164- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
165 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
166 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
167
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000168Build

171- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
172
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000173Documentation
174-------------
175
Nick Coghlan6e8fef02008-08-18 13:14:22 +0000176- Issue #2235: the C API function PyObject_HashNotImplemented and its
177 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
178
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000179- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
180 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
181 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
182 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000188*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
189
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000190Core and Builtins
191-----------------
192
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000193- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
194 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
195 an integer using operator.index().
196
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000197- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
198 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
199
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000200- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
201 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
202
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000203- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
204 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
205 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
206
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000207- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
208 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
209 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
210 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
211 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
212 level.
213
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000214- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
215 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
216 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
217 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
218 all imports from that module to fail.
219
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000220- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
221 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
222 new-style classes.
223
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000224- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
225 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
226 another file in sys.stdout.
227
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000228- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
229 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
230 another thread's dictionary.
231
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000232- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
233 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
234 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
235 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
236 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
237 10, -1).
238
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000239- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
240 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
241 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000242
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000243- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
244 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
245 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000246
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000247Library
248-------
249
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000250- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
251 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
252 error when they failed.
253
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000254- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
255
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000256- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
257
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000258- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.

261
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000262- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
263 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
264
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000265- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000266
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000267- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
268 a valid dlerror() message.
269
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000270- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
271 incomplete structure was created.
272
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000273- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
274
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +0000275- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
276
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000277- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000278
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000279- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
280 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000281 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000282 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
283 merged into trunk.
284
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000285- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

289- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
290
291- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
292 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000293 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000294
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000295- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000296 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000297
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000298- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
299 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
300
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000301- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
302 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000821- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
822 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
823 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
824 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
825 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
826 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
827 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
828 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
829 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
830 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
831 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
832 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
833 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
834 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
835 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
836 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
837 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
838 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
839 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
840 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
841
842 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
843 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
844 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
845 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
846 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
847 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
848 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
849 access to the underlying socket used.
850
851 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
852 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
853 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000854
855 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000856 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

858 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
859
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000860 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001148- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1149 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1150 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1151 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1152 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1153 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1154
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001155- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001394- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1395 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1396 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1397 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1398 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001399 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1400 as supported by type.__new__().

1404 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1405 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
