36- Issue #3850: recursion tests in Misc/find_recursion_limit.py can raise
37 AttributeError instead of RuntimeError, depending in which C API call
38 exactly the recursion limit is exceeded. Consequently, both exception types
39 are caught and silenced.

54-----------------
55
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000056- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
57
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000058- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
59 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
60 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
61 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
62 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
63 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
64 64bit values.
65
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000066- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
67 error.
68
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000069- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
70 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
71 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
72 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
73
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000074- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
75 a unicode argument.
76
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000077- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
78
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000079- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000080 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000081 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
82
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000083- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000084 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
85 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
86 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
87 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
88 type object.
89
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000090- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
91
92- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
93
94- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
95
96- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
97
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000098- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
99 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
100
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000101- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
102 ``__delslice__``.
103
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000104- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
105 library targets in the Makefile.
106
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000107- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
108 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
109 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

120 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
121

125
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000126- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
127 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
128 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
129

159 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
160 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
161 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
162
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000163- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000228
229Core and Builtins
230-----------------
231
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000232- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
233 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
234 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
235 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
236 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
237 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
238 default.
239
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000240- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
241 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
242
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000243- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
244 value again.
245
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000246- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
247 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
248 and introducing s*.
249
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000250- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
251 object was stored in the freelist.
252
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000253- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
254 ValueError consistently across platforms.
255
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000256- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
257 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
258 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
259
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000260- Apply security patches from Apple.
261
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000262- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
263 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
264
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000265- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
266 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
267
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000268- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
269 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
270 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
271
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000272- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
273 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
274 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
275 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
276 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
277 failed have been fixed.
278
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000279Library
280-------
281
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000282- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
283
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000284- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
285 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
286
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000287- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
288 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
289 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
290
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000291- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
292 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
293 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
294 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
295 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
296 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
297
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000298- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
299 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
300
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000301- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
302
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000303- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
304
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000305- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
306
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000307- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
308 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
309
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000310- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
311 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
312
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000313- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
314 in a redirect.
315
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000316- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000317 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000318
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000319- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000423Core and Builtins
424-----------------
425
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000426- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
427 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
428 an integer using operator.index().
429
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000430- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
431 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
432
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000433- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
434 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
435
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000436- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
437 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
438 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
439
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000440- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
441 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
442 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
443 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
444 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
445 level.
446
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000447- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
448 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
449 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
450 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
451 all imports from that module to fail.
452
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000453- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
454 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
455 new-style classes.
456
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000457- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
458 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
459 another file in sys.stdout.
460
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000461- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
462 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
463 another thread's dictionary.
464
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000465- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
466 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
467 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
468 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
469 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
470 10, -1).
471
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000472- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
473 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
474 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000475
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000476- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

485 error when they failed.
486
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000487- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000512- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
513 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000514 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000515 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
516 merged into trunk.

533
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000534- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

921
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000922- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
923 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +0000924 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000925
926 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
927
928 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
929
930 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
931
932 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
933
934 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
935
936 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000986- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
987 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
988 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
989 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
990 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
991 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
992 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
993 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

1017
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +00001018- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
1019 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
1020 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +00001021

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001035- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +00001036 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
1037 build documentation for more information.
1038
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +00001039- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
1040 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
1041 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
1042 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
1043
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +00001044- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released

1054-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001055
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001056- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1057 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1058 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1059 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1060 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1061 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1062 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1063 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1064 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1065 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1066 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1067 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1068 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1069 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1070 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1071 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1072 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1073 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1074 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1075 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1076
1077 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1078 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1079 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1080 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1081 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1082 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1083 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1084 access to the underlying socket used.
1085
1086 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1087 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1088 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001089
1090 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001091 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001092 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1093 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1094
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001095 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1096 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1149
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +00001150- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001151 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
1152 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the
1153 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
1154 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'
1155 codec.

1374
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001375- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1376 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1377 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1378 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1379 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1380 module is:
1381 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1382
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001383- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1384 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1385 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1386 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1387 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1388 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1389
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001390- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1391 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1392 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and

1394 PyObject_Format().
1395
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001396- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1397 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent

1409 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001410
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001411- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1427 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001428

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001556- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the
1557 possibility of having a self-referential tuple, which is possible

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001629- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1630 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1631 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1632 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1633 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001634 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1635 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001636
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001637- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
1638 object to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back
1639 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1640 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1641 method.
