14
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +000015- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
16 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
17 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
18 will be regenerated.
19
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +000020- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
21 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
22 immediately popped off the stack.

Anthony Baxter5d32a9f2006-08-02 07:43:09 +000051*Release date: 03-AUG-2006*
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +000052
53Core and builtins
54-----------------
55
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +000056- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t, it previously
57 returned a long (see PEP 353).
58
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +000059- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
60
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +000061- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
62 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
63 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
64
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +000065- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
66 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
67
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +000068- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
69 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
70 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
71 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
72
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +000073- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
74 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
75 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
76 the code to make that compiler happy again.
77
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +000078- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.
79
Martin v. Löwisd22968a2006-07-24 11:54:53 +000080- Patch #1232023: Stop including current directory in search
81 path on Windows.
82
Neal Norwitze1fdb322006-07-21 05:32:28 +000083- Fix some potential crashes found with failmalloc.
84
Neal Norwitze7563102006-07-17 01:00:16 +000085- Fix warnings reported by Klocwork's static analysis tool.
86
Neal Norwitz84be93b2006-07-16 01:50:38 +000087- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code within a function
88 had more than 255 blank lines.
89
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +000090- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
91 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
92
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +000093- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +000094 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +000095 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +000096
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +000097- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
98 The Python core compiles again then, and, in a build without threads, the
99 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
100 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
101
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000102- Bug #1525447: build on MacOS X on a case-sensitive filesystem.
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000103
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000104
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000105Library
106-------
107
Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +0000108- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
109 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
110
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000111- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
112 KeyboardInterrupt.
113
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +0000114- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
115 shutil.copytree on Windows
116
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000117- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
118 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
119
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000120- Rename of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done to
121 make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
122 #1513611, and probably others.
123
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000124- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
125 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
126
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000127- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
128 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
129 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
130 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
131 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
132
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +0000133- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and are now kept
134 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].
Martin v. Löwis997ceff2006-07-27 06:38:16 +0000135
Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +0000136- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
137
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000138- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names correctly
139 with title().
140
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000141- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
142 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
143
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000144- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
145
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000146- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
147 value in the traceback module.
148
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000149- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
150
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000151- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
152
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000153- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
154 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
155 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
156 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
157 tuple pre-2.4.
158
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000159- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
160
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000161- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
162 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
163 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
164 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
165 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
166 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
167 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
168 charset and language parts).
169
170 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
171 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
172
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000173- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
174
175- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
176 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
177
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000178- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
179 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
180 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
181 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.
182
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000183
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000184Extension Modules
185-----------------
186
Neal Norwitz9b0ca792006-08-02 06:46:21 +0000187- Patch #1519025 and bug #926423: If a KeyboardInterrupt occurs during
188 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
189 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
190
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000191- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more
192 openbsd target platforms.
193
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000194- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had
195 a memory leak, affecting pickles and deep copies.
196
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000197- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by
Andrew M. Kuchling10c2b552006-07-26 17:22:21 +0000198 Paul Eggert.
199
Martin v. Löwisbda0dde2006-07-24 10:26:33 +0000200- Patch #1448199: Release interpreter lock in _winreg.ConnectRegistry.
201
Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000202- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
203 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
204 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
205
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000206- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000207 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000208 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
209
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000210- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
211 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000212
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000213- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
214 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
215
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000216- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
217 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
218 sleepycat API allows.
219
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000220- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
221 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
222
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000223Tests
224-----
225
226- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
227 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
228 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
229
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000230- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
231 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
232 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.
Tim Peters3e246a82006-07-27 15:09:20 +0000233
Martin v. Löwis0907f4d2006-07-30 14:09:47 +0000234Build
235-----
236
237- Bug #1439538: Drop usage of test -e in configure as it is not portable.
238
Ronald Oussoren26cad082006-08-01 21:00:57 +0000239Mac
240---
241
242- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
243 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
244
245- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
246 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
247 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users
248 expect.

256Core and builtins
257-----------------
258
Neil Schemenauer6ec6ab02006-07-09 21:19:29 +0000259- Bug #1441486: The literal representation of -(sys.maxint - 1)
260 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
261
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000262- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
263 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
264
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000265- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
266 be released.
267
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +0000268- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
269 and atof().
270
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000271- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
272 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
273 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000274
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000275- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
276
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000277- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
278 now ints rather than longs.
279
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000280- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
281 started after line 256.
282
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000283- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
284 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
285 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
286 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
287 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
288 an extension.
289

297
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000298- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +0000299 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
300 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.
301

305
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000306- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
307 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
308 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
309
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000310- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

317 degrees and radians.
318
Martin v. Löwis4c4300d2006-07-03 10:05:30 +0000319- Reimplement turtle.circle using a polyline, to allow correct
Martin v. Löwis2b88f632006-07-03 10:19:49 +0000320 filling of arcs.
Martin v. Löwis4c4300d2006-07-03 10:05:30 +0000321

337 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
338 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
339
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000340- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

366 integer or long, without range checking.
367
368- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
369 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
370 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
371
372- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
373 with the --without-threads option.

Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000392 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
393 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
394
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000395- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

425Core and builtins
426-----------------
427
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000428- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
429 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
430 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
431
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000432- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
433 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
434
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000435- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
436
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000437- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000438 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000439
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000440- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
441 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
442 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
443 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
444 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
445
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000446- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
447 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
448
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000449- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
450 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
451 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
452 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
453 requested.
454
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000455- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
456 away like they were in Python 2.4.
457
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000458- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
459 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
460 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
461
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000462- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
463 Unicode 4.1.
464
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000465- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
466 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
467 fewer open calls on startup.
468
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000469- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
470 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
471 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
472 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
473 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
474
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000475- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
476 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
477 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
478 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
479
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000480- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
481
482- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
483 "base" parameter.
484
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000485- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
486 objects.
487
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000488- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
489 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
490 C library function.
491
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000492- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
493
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000494- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
495
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000496- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
497 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
498 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
499 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
500
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000501- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
502
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000503- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
504
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000505- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
506 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
507 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
508 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
509
510- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
511 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
512 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
513 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

521
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000522- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
523 buffer and actually follow its documentation.

526
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +0000527- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
528 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
529 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
530 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

543 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
544
545- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
546 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
547
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000548- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
549 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
550 Windows platforms).
551
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000552- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

571
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000572- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

Tim Petersd6a9eef2006-06-05 01:48:21 +0000631- The optional ``isprivate`` argument to ``doctest.testmod()``, and the
632 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +0000633
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +0000634- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
635 for lookup.
636
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +0000637- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
638 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
639 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
640 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
641 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
642
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +0000643- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2
644 (thanks for J. J. Lee).
645
Georg Brandl2b330372006-05-28 20:23:12 +0000646- Patch #1496206: improve urllib2 handling of passwords with respect to
647 default HTTP and HTTPS ports.
648
George Yoshidaf3c65de2006-05-28 16:39:09 +0000649- Patch #1080727: add "encoding" parameter to doctest.DocFileSuite.
650
Bob Ippolito7298f272006-05-23 18:43:47 +0000651- Patch #1281707: speed up gzip.readline.
652
Georg Brandlb89316f2006-05-17 15:51:16 +0000653- Patch #1180296: Two new functions were added to the locale module:
654 format_string() to get the effect of "format % items" but locale-aware,
655 and currency() to format a monetary number with currency sign.
656
Georg Brandle3a25832006-05-17 14:56:04 +0000657- Patch #1486962: Several bugs in the turtle Tk demo module were fixed
658 and several features added, such as speed and geometry control.
659
Georg Brandl49c8f4c2006-05-15 19:30:35 +0000660- Patch #1488881: add support for external file objects in bz2 compressed
661 tarfiles.
662
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000663- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and
664 stdout arguments, making it possible to redirect input and output
665 for remote debugging.
666
667- Patch #1484695: Update the tarfile module to version 0.8. This fixes
668 a couple of issues, notably handling of long file names using the
669 GNU LONGNAME extension.
670
671- Patch #1478292. ``doctest.register_optionflag(name)`` shouldn't create a
672 new flag when ``name`` is already the name of an option flag.
673
674- Bug #1385040: don't allow "def foo(a=1, b): pass" in the compiler
675 package.
676
677- Patch #1472854: make the rlcompleter.Completer class usable on non-
678 UNIX platforms.

Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000713What's New in Python 2.5 alpha 2?
714=================================
715
716*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
717
718Core and builtins
719-----------------
720
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +0000721- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
722 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
723
724 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
725 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
726 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
727 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
728 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
729
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +0000730- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
731
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +0000732- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
733 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
734 multiple times.
735
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +0000736- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
737 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
738 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
739
740- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
741 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
742
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000743- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
744 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
745 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +0000746 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000747 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +0000748
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000749 def __hash__(self):
750 return id(self) # WRONG
751
752 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
753 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +0000754 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000755 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
756 necessarily so.
757
758- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000759 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000760 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000761 #1454844)
762
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +0000763- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
764 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
765 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
766 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
767 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000768
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +0000769Extension Modules

774
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +0000775- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()

781 the cachesize parameter.
782
783- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
784 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
785
786- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
787 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +0000788
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +0000789- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
790 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

Peter Astrand7d1d4362006-07-14 14:04:45 +0000795- Bug #1223937: subprocess.CalledProcessError reports the exit status
796 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
797 abusing errno.
798
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +0000799- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

801 or exception is ignored).
802
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +0000803- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
804 caught inside exit handlers.

Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +0000806- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
807 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
808 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
809 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
810
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +0000811- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
812 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
813
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +0000814- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
815 .zip or .egg files.
816
817- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
818 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
819 in the filesystem or zip files.
820
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +0000821- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

882
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +0000883- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
884 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
885 the current Decimal context.
886

888 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
889 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
890 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

918
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +0000919- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
920 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
921
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +0000922- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
923 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
924 end in .PYD.
925
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +0000926- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as

Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +0000933- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
934
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +0000935- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
936 5.4 and later versions.
937
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +0000938- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
939 now gives a SyntaxError.
940
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +0000941- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
942 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
943 (closes patch #1170323).
944
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +0000945- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
946 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
947 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
948 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
949 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
950 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
951 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +0000952 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
953 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +0000954 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
955 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
956
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +0000957- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
958 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
959 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
960
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +0000961- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
962 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
963 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
964 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
965
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +0000966- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
967
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +0000968- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
969 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
970 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
971 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
972
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +0000973- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
974 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
975 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
976 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
977 absolute_import' is used.
978
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +0000979- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
980 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
981 exceptions.
982
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +0000983- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +0000984 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
985
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +0000986- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +0000987
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +0000988- Patch 1433928:
989 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
990 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
991 KeyError.
992
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +0000993- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
994 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
995 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +0000996 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +0000997 The following objects have __context__ methods:
998 - The built-in file type.
999 - The thread.LockType type.
1000 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1001 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1002 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001003
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001004- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1005 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1006
1007 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1008 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1009
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001010- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1011
1012- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1013 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1014 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1015 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1016 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001017
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001018- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1019 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1020 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1021
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001022- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1023 configure would break checking curses.h.
1024
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001025- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1026 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1027
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001028- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1029
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001030- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1031
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001032- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1033
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001034- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1035 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1036
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001037- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00001038 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001039 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1040
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001041- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1042 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001043 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001044

1049
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001050- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001051 and long longs.
1052
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001053- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001054 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001055 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001056
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001057- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1058 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1059 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1060 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1061 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1062
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001063- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1082
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001083- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001084 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1085 was empty.
1086
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001087- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1088 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1089
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001090- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001091 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001092
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00001093- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
1094 codes.
1095
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001096- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1097 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1098 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1099
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001100- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1101 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
1102
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00001103- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001104 (fixes bug #1119418).
1105
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001106- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1107
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001108- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1109 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1110
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001111- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1112 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1113 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1114
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001115- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1116
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001117- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1118 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1119
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001120- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1121 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1122 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001123 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001124 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1125 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1126 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1127 realloc.
1128
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001129- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1130 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1131
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001132- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1133 like their int counterparts.
1134
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001135- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1136 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1137 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1138 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1139 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1140
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001141- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1142 serializing floats.
1143
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001144- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1145 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1146 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1147
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001148- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1149 278.
1150
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001151- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1152 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1153 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1154 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001155 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001156 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001157 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001158
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001159- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1160 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1161 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1162 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1163
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001164- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1165 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1166 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1167 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1168 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1169
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001170- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1171 disabled caused a crash.
1172
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001173- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1174 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1175
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001176- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001177 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1178
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001179- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
1180
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001181- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001182 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1183 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1184 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001185
Martin v. Löwis96d743e2005-03-03 23:00:26 +00001186- Patch #1115086: Support PY_LONGLONG in structmember.
1187
Raymond Hettingerb67cc802005-03-03 16:45:19 +00001188- Bug #1155938: new style classes did not check that __init__() was

1193
Martin v. Löwisff232d72005-03-03 09:24:38 +00001194- Bug #723201: Raise a TypeError for passing bad objects to 'L' format.
1195
Michael W. Hudson8e1afab2005-02-17 14:55:21 +00001196- Bug #1124295: the __name__ attribute of file objects was
1197 inadvertently made inaccessible in restricted mode.
1198
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001199- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001200 an ferror() call.
1201
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001202- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in
1203 list.sort().
1204
Raymond Hettingerc34f8672005-01-02 06:17:33 +00001205- The peephole optimizer now performs simple constant folding in expressions:
1206 (2+3) --> (5).
1207
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00001208- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
1209
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00001210- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption
1211 in calls to os.read().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001212
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001213- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal

1222 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1223 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1224 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1225 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001436 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001437 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001438 module will not be built.

1441 aren't officially supported here, and trying to use them will probably
1442 raise an exception some day. But dicts have been allowed, and "mostly
1443 worked", so support for them won't go away without warning.

1463
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001464- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1465 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1466 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1467 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1468 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1469 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1470 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.
1471
Walter Dörwald40108c92006-03-27 08:15:44 +00001472- Patches #1436130/#1443155: codecs.lookup() now returns a CodecInfo object
1473 (a subclass of tuple) that provides incremental decoders and encoders
1474 (a way to use stateful codecs without the stream API). Python functions
1475 codecs.getincrementaldecoder() and codecs.getincrementalencoder() as well
1476 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
1477 have been added.

1742
Martin v. Löwis22b457e2005-01-16 08:40:58 +00001743- os.{SEEK_SET, SEEK_CUR, SEEK_END} have been added for convenience.
1744
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001745- Enhancements to the csv module:
1746
1747 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00001748 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001749 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001750 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
1751 reporting.
1752 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
1753 dictates.
1754 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00001755 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00001756 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00001757 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
1758 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00001759 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
1760 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00001761 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001762 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
1763 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
1764 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
1765 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
1766 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
1767 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
1768 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
1769 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
1770 without first creating a dialect class.
1771 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
1772 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
1773 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00001774 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001775 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
1776 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00001777 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
1778 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
1779 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
1780 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001781 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
1782 This has been fixed.
1783
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00001784- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
1785 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
1786 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
1787 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
1788
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00001789- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
1790

1792 (Bug #951915).
1793
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00001794- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
1795 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
1796 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00001797 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00001798
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00001799- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.

1811
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00001812- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
1813
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00001814- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
1815 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
1816 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
1817
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001818- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001819 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001820
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00001821- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
1822 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
1823 tokenizer with very long source lines.
1824
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00001825- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001831
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00001832- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
1833 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
1834
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00001835- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
1836 correctly.
1837
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00001838- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
1839 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
1840 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
1841 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
1842 between two lines.
1843
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00001844- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
1845 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
1846 handlers.
1847
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001848- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00001849 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
1850 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00001852- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
1853 considering it exactly like a '*'.
1854
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00001855- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
1856 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00001857
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00001858- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
1859
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00001860- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
1861 touch the recursion limit.
1862
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00001863- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
1864 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00001865 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
1866 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
1867 special classes that use unicode.

1907
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00001908- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
1909 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
1910 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
1911 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
1912 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
1913 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
1914 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
1915 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
1916
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00001917- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
1918 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
1919 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.

1923-----
1924
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00001925- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
1926 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
1927 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
1928 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
1929 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
1930 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
1931 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
1932 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
1933 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
1934 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
1935
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00001936- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
