Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000018Extensions Modules
19------------------
20
Gregory P. Smith671c5d92008-04-09 18:18:43 +000021- zlib.decompressobj().flush(value) no longer crashes the interpreter when
22 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
23
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000024- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
25 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
26 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
27 possible.
28
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000029Library
30-------
31
Nick Coghlan106fc482008-04-15 10:25:31 +000032- Issue #2439: Added new function pkgutil.get_data(), which is a
33 convenience wrapper for the PEP 302 get_data() API.
34
Thomas Heller046e6a42008-04-14 16:10:07 +000035- Issue #2616: The ctypes.pointer() and ctypes.POINTER() functions are
36 now implemented in C for better performance.
37
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc02f33b42008-04-08 23:10:07 +000038- Issue #2408: The ``_types`` module, which was used as in implementation
39 detail of the public ``types`` module, has been removed and replaced by pure
40 python code.
41
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +000042- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
43 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
44 build documentation for more information.
45
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +000046- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
47 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
48 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
49 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
50
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000051- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
52 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
53 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
54
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +000055- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
56 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
57 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
58
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000059Tests
60-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000061- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
62 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
63 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
64 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
65 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
66 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
67 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
68 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
69 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
70 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
71 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
72 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
73 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
74 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
75 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
76 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
77 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
78 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
79
80 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
81 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
82 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
83 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
84 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
85 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
86 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
87
88 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
89 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
90
91 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
92 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
93 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
94 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
95
96 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
97 run in parallel without issue.

335Core and builtins
336-----------------
337
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000338- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000339 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000340
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000341- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
342
343- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000344
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000345- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000346 issue 215555 for a discussion.
347
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000348- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
349 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
350 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
351 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
352 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
353 module is:
354 from future_builtins import hex, oct
355
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000356- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
357 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
358 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
359 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
360 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
361 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
362
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000363- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
364 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
365 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
366 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
367 PyObject_Format().
368
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000369- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
370 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
371
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000372- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
373 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access a slot
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000374 on a registered virtual subclass.
375
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000376- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as real or
377 imaginary part.
378
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000379- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000380 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
381 OS earlier.
382
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000383- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a subclass of
384 collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set to a bound method.
385
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000386- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
387 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
388
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000389- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
390 each.
391
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc578a8ca2008-02-04 20:53:14 +0000392- Patch #1953: Added ``sys._compact_freelists()`` and the C API functions
393 ``PyInt_CompactFreeList`` and ``PyFloat_CompactFreeList``

395
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +0000396- Bug #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty() calls.
397 Python expected the return type int but the fork familie returns pi_t.
398
Mark Dickinson105be772008-01-31 22:17:37 +0000399- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they appear
400 in the same code unit.

Christian Heimes908caac2008-01-27 23:34:59 +0000409 internal lookup cache for ref leak tests.
410
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000411- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
412 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
413 generator.
414
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000415- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000416 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000417 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
418 "else" suite.
419
Guido van Rossumeead05f2008-01-24 18:21:02 +0000420- A few crashers fixed: weakref_in_del.py (issue #1377858);

Christian Heimesb2302ba2008-01-23 17:15:06 +0000425 suppressed while an extension is loaded by calling SetErrorMode in
426 dynload_win.c. The error is still reported properly.
427
Christian Heimes082c9b02008-01-23 14:20:50 +0000428- Bug #1915: Python compiles with --enable-unicode=no again. However

Christian Heimes9c201962008-01-14 03:33:52 +0000448
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4c270c2008-01-14 00:29:41 +0000449- Patch #1700288: added a type attribute cache that caches method accesses,
450 resulting in speedups in heavily object-oriented code.
451
Neal Norwitz3fc15b82008-01-10 05:42:58 +0000452- Bug #1776: __import__() no longer accepts filenames on any platform.
453 The first parameter to __import__() must be a valid module name.
Christian Heimes3403f152008-01-09 19:56:33 +0000454

518
Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000519- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
520 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
521 shifts from ints to longs.
522
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000523- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
524 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
525 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
526 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
527 respectively, fixed the issues.
528
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000529- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
530 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
531 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
532 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
533

538 list by using the recursion counter.
539
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000540- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
541 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
542 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
543 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
544 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
545
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000546- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

Neal Norwitz0ac60192007-05-27 04:08:54 +0000559- Add new attribute names for function objects. All the func_* become
560 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
561
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000562- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
563 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.

Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000568- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or
569 "except E as target:". This is to provide forwards compatibility with
570 Python 3.0.
571
Brett Cannon229cee22007-05-05 01:34:02 +0000572- Deprecate BaseException.message as per PEP 352.

575 inherited from a builtin base.
576
Vinay Sajip8549ce32007-05-06 17:53:37 +0000577- When __slots__ are set to a unicode string, make it work the same as
Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000578 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
579
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000580- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

588
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000589- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
590
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000591- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
592 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
593 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
594 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
595 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000596 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
597 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000598
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000599- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
600 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
601 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
602 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
603
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000604- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.
605 The old and the new class are still required to have the same slot names.
