103
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000104- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
105
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000106- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
107 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
108 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
109 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
110 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
111 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
112 64bit values.
113
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000114- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
115 error.
116
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000117- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
118 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
119 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
120 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
121
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000122- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
123 a unicode argument.
124
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000125- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
126
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000127- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000128 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000129 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
130
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000131- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000132 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
133 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
134 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
135 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
136 type object.
137
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000138- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
139
140- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
141
142- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
143
144- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
145
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000146- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
147 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
148
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000149- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
150 ``__delslice__``.
151
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000152- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
153 library targets in the Makefile.
154
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000155- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
156 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
157 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000174- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
175 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
176 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

207 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
208 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
209 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
210
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000211- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

277Core and Builtins
278-----------------
279
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000280- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
281 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
282 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
283 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
284 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
285 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
286 default.
287
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000288- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
289 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
290
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000291- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
292 value again.
293
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000294- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
295 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
296 and introducing s*.
297
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000298- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
299 object was stored in the freelist.
300
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000301- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
302 ValueError consistently across platforms.
303
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000304- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
305 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
306 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
307
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000308- Apply security patches from Apple.
309
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000310- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
311 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
312
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000313- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
314 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
315
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000316- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
317 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
318 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
319
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000320- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
321 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
322 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
323 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
324 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
325 failed have been fixed.

331
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000332- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of

334
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000335- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
336 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
337 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
338
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000339- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
340 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
341 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
342 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
343 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
344 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
345
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000346- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things

357
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000358- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()

369
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000370- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
371 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
372 regular expression.
373
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000374- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now

387 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
388
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000389- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
390 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
391
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000392- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
393 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
394 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
395
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000396- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that

440
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000441- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
442 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
443 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
444
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000445- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

470
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000471Core and Builtins
472-----------------
473
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000474- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
475 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
476 an integer using operator.index().
477
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000478- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
479 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
480
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000481- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
482 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
483
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000484- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
485 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
486 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
487
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000488- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
489 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
490 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
491 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
492 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
493 level.
494
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000495- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
496 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
497 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
498 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
499 all imports from that module to fail.
500
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000501- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
502 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
503 new-style classes.
504
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000505- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
506 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
507 another file in sys.stdout.
508
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000509- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
510 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
511 another thread's dictionary.
512
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000513- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
514 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
515 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
516 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
517 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
518 10, -1).
519
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000520- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
521 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
522 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000523
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000524- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
525 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
526 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000527

529-------
530
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000531- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
532 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
533 error when they failed.
534
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000535- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

542
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000543- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
544 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
545
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000546- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000547
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000548- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
549 a valid dlerror() message.
550
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000551- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000559
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000560- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
561 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000562 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000563 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
564 merged into trunk.
565
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000566- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

571
572- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously

Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000574 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000575
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000576- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000577 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000578
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000579- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
580 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
581
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000582- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
583 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000589 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
590 Prevents a deadlock.
591
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000592- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
593 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
594 default https port (443).
595
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000596- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001034- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1035 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1036 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1037 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1039 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1040 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001104- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1105 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1106 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1107 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1108 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1109 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1110 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1111 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1112 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1113 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1114 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1115 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1116 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1117 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1118 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1119 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1120 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1121 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1122 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1123 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1124
1125 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1126 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1127 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1128 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1129 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1130 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1131 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1132 access to the underlying socket used.
1133
1134 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1135 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1136 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001137
1138 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001139 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1142
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001143 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1144 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1422
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001423- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1424 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1425 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1426 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1427 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1428 module is:
1429 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1430
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001431- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1432 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1433 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1434 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1435 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1436 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1437
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001438- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1439 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1440 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1441 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1442 PyObject_Format().
1443
