22 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual Plane. This

1086
1087- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
1088
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001089- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001090 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1091 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001092
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001093 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1094 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1095 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1096 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1097 exception, logged, etc.
1098
1099 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1100 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001101
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001102- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
1103

1107- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1108 classic classes.
1109
1110- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1111 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1112 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1113 to effectively use __index__.
1114
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +00001115- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
1116 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
1117
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +00001118- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +00001120- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
1121 sys.stdin is closed.
1122
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +00001123- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
1124 the Python dll again.
1125
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001126- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
1127 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
1128 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
1129 will be regenerated.
1130
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +00001131- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
1132 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
1133 immediately popped off the stack.
1134
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +00001135- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

1142 generated for generator expressions.
1143
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001144- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
1145 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
1146 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
1147 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
1148
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001149- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001150 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is

1156
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +00001157- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001158 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +00001159 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
1160 duplicate UUIDs.
1161
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +00001162- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
1163 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
1164
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +00001165- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.

1253
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001254- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +00001255 returned a long (see PEP 353).
1256
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001257- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1258
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001259- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1260 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1261 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1262
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001263- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1264 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1265
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001266- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1267 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1268 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1269 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1270
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001271- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1272 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1273 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1274 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1275
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +00001276- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

1287
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +00001288- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and

1290
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001291- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001292 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001293 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001295- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001296 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001297 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

1307 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
1308
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +00001309- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

1316 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
1317
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +00001318- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001319 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +00001320 #1513611, and probably others.
1321
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +00001322- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
1323 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
1324
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001325- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1326 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1327 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1328 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1329 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1330
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001331- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +00001332 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].

Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +00001334- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
1335
Georg Brandldb232dc2006-08-20 13:15:43 +00001336- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
1337 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +00001338
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +00001339- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
1340 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
1341
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +00001342- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
1343
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +00001344- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
1345 value in the traceback module.
1346
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +00001347- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
1348
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001349- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1350
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001351- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1352 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1353 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1354 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1355 tuple pre-2.4.
1356
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001357- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1358
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001359- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1360 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1361 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1362 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1363 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1364 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1365 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1366 charset and language parts).
1367
1368 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1369 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1370
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001371- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
1372
1373- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
1374 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1375
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001376- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1377 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1378 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1379 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1386 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
1387 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
1388
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +00001389- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more

1391
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +00001392- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

1394
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001395- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by

1402 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
1403
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001404- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

1407
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001408- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
1409 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001410
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +00001411- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
1412 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
1413
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +00001414- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
1415 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
1416 sleepycat API allows.
1417
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +00001418- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different

1480
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001481- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1482 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1483 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1484 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1485 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1486 an extension.

1625-----------------
1626
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001627- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1628 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1629 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1630
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001631- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1632 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1633
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001634- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1635
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001636- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001637 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001638
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001639- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1640 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1641 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1642 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1643 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1644
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001645- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1646 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1647
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001648- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1649 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1650 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1651 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1652 requested.
1653
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001654- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1655 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1656
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001657- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1658 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1659 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1660
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001661- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1662 Unicode 4.1.
1663
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001664- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1665 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1666 fewer open calls on startup.
1667
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001668- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1669 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1670 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1671 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1672 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1673
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001674- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1675 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1676 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1677 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1678
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001679- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1680
1681- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1682 "base" parameter.
1683
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001684- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1685 objects.
1686
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001687- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1688 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1689 C library function.
1690
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001691- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1692
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001693- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1694
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001695- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1696 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1697 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1698 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1699
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001700- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1701
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001702- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1703
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001704- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1705 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1706 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1707 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1708
1709- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1710 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1711 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1712 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1720
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001721- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1722 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1723

Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001726- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1727 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1728 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1729 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

1742 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1743
1744- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1745 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1746
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001747- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

1749 Windows platforms).
1750
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001751- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

1769 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1770
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001771- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1772 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1773 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.

Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001810- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1811 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1812 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1813 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1814 of the matching pair.

1834 for lookup.
1835
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001836- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1837 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1838 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1839 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1840 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1919
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001920- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1921 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1922
1923 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1924 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx

1928
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001929- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1930
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001931- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1932 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1933 multiple times.
1934
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001935- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1936 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1937 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1938
1939- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1940 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1941
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001942- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1943 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1944 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001945 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001946 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001947
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001948 def __hash__(self):
1949 return id(self) # WRONG
1950
1951 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1952 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001953 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001954 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1955 necessarily so.
1956
1957- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001958 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001959 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001960 #1454844)
1961
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001962- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1963 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1964 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1965 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1966 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

1973
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001974- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()

Tim Peters8931ff12006-05-13 23:28:20 +00002070- ``PyString_FromFormat``, ``PyErr_Format``, and ``PyString_FromFormatV``
2071 now accept formats "%u" for unsigned ints, "%lu" for unsigned longs,
2072 and "%zu" for unsigned integers of type ``size_t``.

Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00002077- test_contextlib now checks contextlib.nested can cope with exceptions
2078 being raised and caught inside exit handlers.
2079
Nick Coghlan27ec1a72006-04-24 04:32:47 +00002080- test_cmd_line now checks operation of the -m and -c command switches
2081
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002082- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2083 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2084 the current Decimal context.
2085
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002086- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2087 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2088 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2089 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

2116-----------------
2117
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002118- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2119 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2120
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002121- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2122 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2123 end in .PYD.
2124
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002125- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2126 sys.stdout.encoding.
2127
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002128- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2129
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002130- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2131
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002132- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2133
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002134- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2135 5.4 and later versions.
2136
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002137- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2138 now gives a SyntaxError.
2139
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002140- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2141 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2142 (closes patch #1170323).
2143
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002144- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2145 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2146 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2147 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2148 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2149 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2150 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002151 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2152 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002153 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2154 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2155
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002156- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2157 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2158 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2159
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002160- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2161 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2162 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2163 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2164
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002165- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2166
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002167- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2168 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2169 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2170 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2171
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002172- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2173 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2174 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2175 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2176 absolute_import' is used.
2177
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002178- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2179 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2180 exceptions.
2181
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002182- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002183 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2184
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002185- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002186
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002187- Patch 1433928:
2188 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2189 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2190 KeyError.
2191
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002192- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2193 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2194 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002195 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002196 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2197 - The built-in file type.
2198 - The thread.LockType type.
2199 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2200 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2201 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002202
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002203- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2204 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2205
2206 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2207 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2208
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002209- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2210
2211- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2212 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2213 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2214 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2215 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002216
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002217- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2218 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2219 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2220
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002221- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2222 configure would break checking curses.h.
2223
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002224- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2225 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2226
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002227- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
2228
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00002229- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
2230
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002231- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2232
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002233- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2234 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2235
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002236- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00002237 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002238 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2239
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002240- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2241 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002242 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002243
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00002244- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
2245 now encodes backslash correctly.
2246
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00002247- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
2248
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002249- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00002250 and long longs.
2251
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002252- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002253 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002254 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002255
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002256- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2257 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2258 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2259 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2260 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
2261
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002262- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002263
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002264- Sped up some Unicode operations.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00002265

2267 syntax tree is available for read-only (non-compile) access
Martin v. Löwis577b5b92006-02-27 15:23:19 +00002268 to Python code; an _ast module was added.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00002269
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002270- SF bug #1167751: fix incorrect code being produced for generator expressions.
Neal Norwitz16af7342005-10-21 06:25:33 +00002271 The following code now raises a SyntaxError: foo(a = i for i in range(10))
2272

2276 Provide a warning when a directory is passed on the command line.
2277
Neal Norwitz40d37812005-10-02 01:48:49 +00002278- Fix segfault with invalid coding.
2279
2280- SF bug #772896: unknown encoding results in MemoryError.
2281
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002282- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002283 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
2284 was empty.
2285
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00002286- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
2287 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
2288
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002289- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00002290 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002291
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00002292- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
2293 codes.
2294
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00002295- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
2296 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
2297 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
2298
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00002299- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
2300 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
2301
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00002302- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00002303 (fixes bug #1119418).
2304
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00002305- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
2306
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00002307- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
2308 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
2309
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002310- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2311 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2312 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2313
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002314- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
2315
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00002316- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
2317 reference counts in some error exit cases.
2318
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002319- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2320 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2321 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002322 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002323 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2324 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2325 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2326 realloc.
2327
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00002328- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
2329 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
2330
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00002331- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
2332 like their int counterparts.
2333
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002334- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2335 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2336 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
2337 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html

Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002350- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2351 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2352 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2353 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002354 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002355 PyNumber_*().

2361 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2362
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002363- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
2364 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
2365 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2366 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
2367 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2368
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002369- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads

2421 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2422 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2423 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2424 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002635 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002636 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002637 module will not be built.

2640 aren't officially supported here, and trying to use them will probably
2641 raise an exception some day. But dicts have been allowed, and "mostly
2642 worked", so support for them won't go away without warning.

2662
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00002663- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
2664 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2665 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2666 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2667 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2668 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
2669 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2943
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002944- Enhancements to the csv module:
2945
2946 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002947 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002948 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002949 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2950 reporting.
2951 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2952 dictates.
2953 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002954 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002955 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002956 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2957 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002958 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2959 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002960 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002961 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2962 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2963 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2964 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2965 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2966 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2967 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2968 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2969 without first creating a dialect class.
2970 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2971 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2972 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002973 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002974 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2975 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002976 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2977 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2978 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2979 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002980 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2981 This has been fixed.
2982
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002983- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2984 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2985 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2986 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2987
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002988- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2989

2991 (Bug #951915).
2992
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002993- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2994 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2995 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002996 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002997
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002998- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2999
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00003000- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the

3010
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00003011- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
3012
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00003013- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
3014 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
3015 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
3016
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003017- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00003018 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003019
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00003020- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
3021 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
3022 tokenizer with very long source lines.
3023
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00003024- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
3025 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
3026 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00003027
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003028- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
3029 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003030
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003031- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3032 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
3033
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003034- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
3035 correctly.
3036
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003037- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3038 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3039 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3040 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3041 between two lines.
3042
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003043- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3044 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3045 handlers.
3046
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003047- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003048 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3049 encoding instead of a unicode string.

3061
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00003062- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
3063 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003064 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3065 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3066 special classes that use unicode.

3106
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003107- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3108 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3109 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3110 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3111 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3112 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3113 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3114 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).

3122-----
3123
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003124- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3125 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3126 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3127 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3128 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3129 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3130 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3131 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
