10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000013- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
14 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
15 new-style classes.
16
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000017- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
18 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
19 another file in sys.stdout.
20
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000021- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
22 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
23 another thread's dictionary.
24
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000025- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
26 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
27 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
28 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
29 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
30 10, -1).
31
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000032- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
33 would not cause a syntax error. This was regression from 2.4 caused by the
34 switch to the new compiler.
35
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000036- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
37 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
38 calls them via gc.collect().

41-------
42
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000043- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
44 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
45 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ with the
46 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
47 merged into trunk.
48
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000049- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
50

52
53- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
54
55- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
56 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
57 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
58
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +000059- Issue #449227: Now with the rlcompleter module, callable objects are added
60 "(" when completed.
61
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +000062- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
63 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
64
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000065- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
66 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
67
68- Issue #2885 (partial): lib2to3 has been updated to handle the renaming of the
69 urllib module in Python 3.0 to urllib.request, urllib.parse, and
70 urllib.error.
71
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +000072- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is

81 default https port (443).

84-----

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000492- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
493 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
494 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
495 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

497 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
498 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

560-----

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000562- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
563 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
564 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
565 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
566 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
567 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
568 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
569 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
570 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
571 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
572 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
573 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
574 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
575 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
576 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
577 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
578 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
579 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
580 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
581 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
582
583 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
584 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
585 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
586 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
587 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
588 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
589 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
590 access to the underlying socket used.
591
592 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
593 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
594 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000595

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000872 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000873
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000874- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
875
876- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000877
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000878- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000879 issue 215555 for a discussion.
880
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000881- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
882 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
883 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
884 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
885 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
886 module is:
887 from future_builtins import hex, oct
888
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000889- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
890 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
891 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
892 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
893 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
894 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
895
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000896- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
897 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
898 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
899 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
900 PyObject_Format().
901
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000902- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
903 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
904 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000905
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000906- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000907 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
908 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000909
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000910- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
911 real or imaginary part.

914 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
915 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000916
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000917- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
918 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
919 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000920
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000921- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
922 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
923
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000924- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256

932 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
933 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +0000934
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000935- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

948 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
949 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000950

952 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
953 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
954 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000955

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001135- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1136 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1137 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1138 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1139 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001140 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1141 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001142
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001143- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
1144 object to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back
1145 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath

Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +00001183- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
