11
12Core and builtins
13-----------------
14
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +000015- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
16 sys.stdin is closed.
17
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +000018- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
19 the Python dll again.
20
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +000021- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
22 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
23 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
24 will be regenerated.
25
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +000026- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
27 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
28 immediately popped off the stack.
29
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +000030- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().
31
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +000032
33Library
34-------
35
36- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
37 str(exception) raised an exception.
38
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +000039- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
40 generated for nested functions.

Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +000046- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.
47 Passing float arguments to struct.pack when integers are expected
48 now triggers a DeprecationWarning.
49
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +000050
51Tests
52-----
53
Georg Brandl9908d162006-08-06 07:06:33 +000054- Bug #1535182: really test the xreadlines() method of bz2 objects.
55
Andrew MacIntyre16ee33a2006-08-06 12:37:03 +000056- test_threading now skips testing alternate thread stack sizes on
57 platforms that don't support changing thread stack size.
58

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +000080
Anthony Baxter5d32a9f2006-08-02 07:43:09 +000081*Release date: 03-AUG-2006*
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +000082
83Core and builtins
84-----------------
85
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +000086- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t, it previously
87 returned a long (see PEP 353).
88
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +000089- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
90
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +000091- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
92 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
93 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
94
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +000095- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
96 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
97
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +000098- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
99 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
100 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
101 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
102
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000103- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
104 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
105 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
106 the code to make that compiler happy again.
107
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000108- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.
109
Martin v. Löwisd22968a2006-07-24 11:54:53 +0000110- Patch #1232023: Stop including current directory in search
111 path on Windows.
112
Neal Norwitze1fdb322006-07-21 05:32:28 +0000113- Fix some potential crashes found with failmalloc.
114
Neal Norwitze7563102006-07-17 01:00:16 +0000115- Fix warnings reported by Klocwork's static analysis tool.
116
Neal Norwitz84be93b2006-07-16 01:50:38 +0000117- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code within a function
118 had more than 255 blank lines.
119
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000120- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
121 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
122
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000123- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000124 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000125 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000126
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000127- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
128 The Python core compiles again then, and, in a build without threads, the
129 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
130 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
131
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000132- Bug #1525447: build on MacOS X on a case-sensitive filesystem.
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000133
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000134
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000135Library
136-------
137
Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +0000138- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
139 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
140
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000141- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
142 KeyboardInterrupt.
143
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +0000144- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
145 shutil.copytree on Windows
146
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000147- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
148 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
149
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000150- Rename of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done to
151 make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
152 #1513611, and probably others.
153
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000154- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
155 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
156
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000157- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
158 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
159 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
160 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
161 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
162
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +0000163- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and are now kept
164 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].
Martin v. Löwis997ceff2006-07-27 06:38:16 +0000165
Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +0000166- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
167
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000168- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names correctly
169 with title().
170
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000171- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
172 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
173
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000174- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
175
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000176- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
177 value in the traceback module.
178
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000179- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
180
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000181- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
182
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000183- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
184 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
185 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
186 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
187 tuple pre-2.4.
188
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000189- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
190
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000191- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
192 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
193 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
194 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
195 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
196 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
197 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
198 charset and language parts).
199
200 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
201 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
202
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000203- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
204
205- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
206 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
207
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000208- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
209 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
210 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
211 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000214Extension Modules
215-----------------
216
Neal Norwitz9b0ca792006-08-02 06:46:21 +0000217- Patch #1519025 and bug #926423: If a KeyboardInterrupt occurs during
218 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
219 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
220
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000221- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more
222 openbsd target platforms.
223
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000224- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had
225 a memory leak, affecting pickles and deep copies.
226
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000227- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by
Andrew M. Kuchling10c2b552006-07-26 17:22:21 +0000228 Paul Eggert.
229
Martin v. Löwisbda0dde2006-07-24 10:26:33 +0000230- Patch #1448199: Release interpreter lock in _winreg.ConnectRegistry.
231
Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000232- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
233 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
234 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
235
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000236- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000237 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000238 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
239
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000240- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
241 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000242
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000243- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
244 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
245
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000246- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
247 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
248 sleepycat API allows.
249
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000250- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
251 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
252
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000253Tests
254-----
255
256- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
257 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
258 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
259
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000260- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
261 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
262 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.
Tim Peters3e246a82006-07-27 15:09:20 +0000263
Martin v. Löwis0907f4d2006-07-30 14:09:47 +0000264Build
265-----
266
267- Bug #1439538: Drop usage of test -e in configure as it is not portable.
268
Ronald Oussoren26cad082006-08-01 21:00:57 +0000269Mac
270---
271
272- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
273 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
274
275- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
276 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
277 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users
278 expect.

288
Neil Schemenauer6ec6ab02006-07-09 21:19:29 +0000289- Bug #1441486: The literal representation of -(sys.maxint - 1)
290 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
291
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000292- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
293 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
294
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000295- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
296 be released.
297
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +0000298- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
299 and atof().
300
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000301- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
302 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
303 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000304
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000305- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
306
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000307- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
308 now ints rather than longs.
309
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000310- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
311 started after line 256.
312
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000313- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
314 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
315 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
316 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
317 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
318 an extension.

397
398- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
399 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param

Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000422 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
423 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
424
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000425- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

456Core and builtins
457-----------------
458
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000459- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
460 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
461 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
462
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000463- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
464 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
465
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000466- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
467
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000468- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000469 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000470
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000471- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
472 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
473 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
474 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
475 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
476
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000477- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
478 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
479
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000480- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
481 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
482 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
483 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
484 requested.
485
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000486- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
487 away like they were in Python 2.4.
488
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000489- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
490 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
491 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
492
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000493- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
494 Unicode 4.1.
495
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000496- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
497 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
498 fewer open calls on startup.
499
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000500- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
501 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
502 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
503 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
504 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
505
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000506- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
507 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
508 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
509 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
510
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000511- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
512
513- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
514 "base" parameter.
515
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000516- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
517 objects.
518
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000519- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
520 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
521 C library function.
522
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000523- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
524
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000525- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
526
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000527- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
528 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
529 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
530 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
531
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000532- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
533
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000534- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
535
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000536- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
537 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
538 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
539 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
540
541- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
542 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
543 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
544 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

552
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000553- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
554 buffer and actually follow its documentation.

559 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
560 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
561 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

574 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
575
576- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
577 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
578
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000579- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
580 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
581 Windows platforms).
582
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000583- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

634 mime.types file for determining MIME types.
635
Georg Brandl2605ca82006-06-14 06:08:31 +0000636- Bug #1339007: Shelf objects now don't raise an exception in their
637 __del__ method when initialization failed.
638

640 double-byte encodings.
641
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +0000642- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
643 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
644 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
645 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
646 of the matching pair.
647
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +0000648- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,
649 description, and epilog.
650

655
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +0000656- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
657
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +0000658- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
659 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
660 function when writing wrapper functions.

Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +0000664
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +0000665- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
666 for lookup.
667
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +0000668- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
669 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
670 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
671 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
672 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
673
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +0000674- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

692 tarfiles.
693
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000694- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and
695 stdout arguments, making it possible to redirect input and output
696 for remote debugging.
697

745=================================
746
747*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
748
749Core and builtins
750-----------------
751
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +0000752- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
753 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
754
755 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
756 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
757 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
758 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
759 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
760
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +0000761- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
762
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +0000763- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
764 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
765 multiple times.
766
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +0000767- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
768 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
769 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
770
771- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
772 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
773
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000774- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
775 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
776 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +0000777 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000778 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +0000779
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000780 def __hash__(self):
781 return id(self) # WRONG
782
783 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
784 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +0000785 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000786 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
787 necessarily so.
788
789- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000790 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000791 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000792 #1454844)
793
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +0000794- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
795 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
796 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
797 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
798 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000799
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +0000800Extension Modules

805
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +0000806- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()

815 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
816
817- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
818 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +0000819
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +0000820- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special

824-------
825
Peter Astrand7d1d4362006-07-14 14:04:45 +0000826- Bug #1223937: subprocess.CalledProcessError reports the exit status
827 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
828 abusing errno.
829
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +0000830- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

832 or exception is ignored).
833
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +0000834- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
835 caught inside exit handlers.
836
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +0000837- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
838 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
839 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
840 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
841
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +0000842- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
843 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
844
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +0000845- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
846 .zip or .egg files.
847
848- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
849 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
850 in the filesystem or zip files.
851
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +0000852- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
853 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
854 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
855 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +0000856
Tim Petersc7605f22006-04-17 21:12:33 +0000857- The ``__del__`` method of class ``local`` in module ``_threading_local``
858 returned before accomplishing any of its intended cleanup.

948-----------------
949
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +0000950- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
951 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
952
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +0000953- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
954 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
955 end in .PYD.
956
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +0000957- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
958 sys.stdout.encoding.
959
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +0000960- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
961
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +0000962- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
963
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +0000964- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
965
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +0000966- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
967 5.4 and later versions.
968
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +0000969- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
970 now gives a SyntaxError.
971
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +0000972- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
973 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
974 (closes patch #1170323).
975
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +0000976- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
977 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
978 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
979 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
980 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
981 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
982 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +0000983 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
984 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +0000985 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
986 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
987
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +0000988- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
989 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
990 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
991
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +0000992- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
993 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
994 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
995 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
996
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +0000997- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
998
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +0000999- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1000 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1001 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1002 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1003
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001004- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1005 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1006 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1007 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1008 absolute_import' is used.
1009
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001010- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1011 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1012 exceptions.
1013
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001014- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001015 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1016
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001017- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001018
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001019- Patch 1433928:
1020 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1021 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1022 KeyError.
1023
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001024- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1025 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1026 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001027 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001028 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1029 - The built-in file type.
1030 - The thread.LockType type.
1031 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1032 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1033 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001034
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001035- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1036 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1037
1038 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1039 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1040
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001041- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1042
1043- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1044 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1045 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1046 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1047 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001048
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001049- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1050 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1051 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1052
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001053- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1054 configure would break checking curses.h.
1055
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001056- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1057 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1058
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001059- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1060
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001061- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1062
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001063- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1064
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001065- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1066 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1067
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001068- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00001069 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001070 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1071
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001072- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1073 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001074 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001075
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001076- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1077 now encodes backslash correctly.
1078
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001079- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1080
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001081- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001082 and long longs.
1083
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001084- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001085 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001086 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001087
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001088- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1089 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1090 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1091 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1092 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1093
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001094- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001095
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001096- Sped up some Unicode operations.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00001097
Martin v. Löwisbd260da2006-02-26 19:42:26 +00001098- A new AST parser implementation was completed. The abstract
1099 syntax tree is available for read-only (non-compile) access
Martin v. Löwis577b5b92006-02-27 15:23:19 +00001100 to Python code; an _ast module was added.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00001101
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001102- SF bug #1167751: fix incorrect code being produced for generator expressions.
Neal Norwitz16af7342005-10-21 06:25:33 +00001103 The following code now raises a SyntaxError: foo(a = i for i in range(10))
1104
Neal Norwitz708e51a2005-10-03 04:48:15 +00001105- SF Bug #976608: fix SystemError when mtime of an imported file is -1.
1106
Neal Norwitz11bd1192005-10-03 00:54:56 +00001107- SF Bug #887946: fix segfault when redirecting stdin from a directory.
1108 Provide a warning when a directory is passed on the command line.
1109
Neal Norwitz40d37812005-10-02 01:48:49 +00001110- Fix segfault with invalid coding.
1111
1112- SF bug #772896: unknown encoding results in MemoryError.
1113
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001114- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001115 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1116 was empty.
1117
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001118- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1119 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1120
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001121- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001122 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001123
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00001124- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
1125 codes.
1126
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001127- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1128 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1129 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1130
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001131- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1132 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
1133
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00001134- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001135 (fixes bug #1119418).
1136
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001137- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1138
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001139- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1140 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1141
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001142- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1143 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1144 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1145
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001146- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1147
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001148- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1149 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1150
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001151- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1152 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1153 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001154 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001155 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1156 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1157 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1158 realloc.
1159
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001160- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1161 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1162
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001163- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1164 like their int counterparts.
1165
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001166- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1167 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1168 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1169 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1170 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1171
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001172- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1173 serializing floats.
1174
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001175- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1176 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1177 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1178
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001179- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1180 278.
1181
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001182- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1183 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1184 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1185 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001186 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001187 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001188 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001189
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001190- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1191 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1192 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1193 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1194
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001195- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1196 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1197 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1198 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1199 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1200
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001201- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1202 disabled caused a crash.
1203
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001204- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1205 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1206
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001207- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001208 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1209
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001210- Added two new builtins, any() and all().

1775
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001776- Enhancements to the csv module:
1777
1778 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00001779 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001780 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001781 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
1782 reporting.
1783 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
1784 dictates.
1785 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00001786 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00001787 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00001788 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
1789 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00001790 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
1791 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00001792 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001793 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
1794 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
1795 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
1796 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
1797 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
1798 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
1799 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
1800 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
1801 without first creating a dialect class.
1802 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
1803 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
1804 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00001805 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001806 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
1807 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00001808 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
1809 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
1810 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
1811 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001812 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
1813 This has been fixed.
1814
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00001815- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
1816 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
1817 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
1818 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
1819
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00001820- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
1821

1823 (Bug #951915).
1824
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00001825- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
1826 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
1827 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00001828 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00001829
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00001830- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
1831
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00001832- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the

1842
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00001843- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
1844
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00001845- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
1846 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
1847 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
1848
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001849- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001850 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001851
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00001852- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
1853 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
1854 tokenizer with very long source lines.
1855
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00001856- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
1857 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
1858 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00001859
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00001860- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
1861 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001862
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00001863- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
1864 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
1865
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00001866- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
1867 correctly.
1868
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00001869- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
1870 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
1871 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
1872 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
1873 between two lines.
1874
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00001875- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
1876 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
1877 handlers.
1878
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001879- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00001880 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
1881 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00001882
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00001883- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
1884 considering it exactly like a '*'.
1885
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00001886- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
1887 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00001888
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00001889- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
1890
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00001891- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
1892 touch the recursion limit.
1893
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00001894- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
1895 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00001896 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
1897 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
1898 special classes that use unicode.

1924
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00001925- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
1926 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
1927 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00001928 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00001930- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
1931 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
1932 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
1933
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00001934- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
1935
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00001936- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
1937 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
1938
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00001939- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
1940 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
1941 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
1942 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
1943 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
1944 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
1945 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
1946 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
1947
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00001948- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
1949 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
1950 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
1951 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

1954-----
1955
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00001956- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
1957 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
1958 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
1959 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
1960 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
1961 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
1962 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
1963 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
1964 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
1965 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
1966
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00001967- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
