60
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000061- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
62
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000063- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
64 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
65 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
66 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
67 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
68 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
69 64bit values.
70
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000071- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
72 error.
73
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000074- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
75 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
76 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
77 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
78
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000079- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
80 a unicode argument.
81
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000082- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
83
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000084- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000085 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000086 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
87
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000088- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000089 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
90 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
91 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
92 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
93 type object.
94
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000095- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
96
97- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
98
99- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
100
101- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
102
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000103- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
104 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
105
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000106- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
107 ``__delslice__``.
108
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000109- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
110 library targets in the Makefile.
111
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000112- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
113 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
114 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

123
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000124- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
125 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
126

130
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000131- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
132 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
133 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
134

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000233
234Core and Builtins
235-----------------
236
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000237- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
238 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
239 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
240 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
241 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
242 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
243 default.
244
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000245- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
246 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
247
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000248- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
249 value again.
250
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000251- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
252 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
253 and introducing s*.
254
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000255- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
256 object was stored in the freelist.
257
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000258- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
259 ValueError consistently across platforms.
260
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000261- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
262 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
263 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
264
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000265- Apply security patches from Apple.
266
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000267- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
268 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
269
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000270- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
271 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
272
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000273- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
274 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
275 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
276
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000277- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
278 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
279 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
280 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
281 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
282 failed have been fixed.
283
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000284Library
285-------
286
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000287- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
288
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000289- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
290 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
291
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000292- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
293 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
294 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
295
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000296- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
297 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
298 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
299 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
300 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
301 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
302
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000303- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
304 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
305
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000306- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
307
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000308- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
309
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000310- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
311
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000312- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
313 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
314
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000315- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
316 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
317
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000318- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
319 in a redirect.
320

Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000431- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
432 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
433 an integer using operator.index().
434
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000435- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
436 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
437
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000438- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
439 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
440
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000441- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
442 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
443 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
444
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000445- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
446 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
447 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
448 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
449 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
450 level.
451
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000452- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
453 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
454 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
455 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
456 all imports from that module to fail.
457
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000458- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
459 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
460 new-style classes.
461
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000462- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

464 another file in sys.stdout.
465
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000466- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

468 another thread's dictionary.
469
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000470- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
471 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
472 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
473 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
474 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
475 10, -1).
476
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000477- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
478 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
479 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000517- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
518 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000519 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000520 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

924
Brett Cannonb61d8012008-05-11 23:39:04 +0000925- ``Lib/lib-old`` is now added to sys.path.
926
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000927- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
928 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +0000929 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000930
931 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
932
933 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
934
935 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
936
937 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
938
939 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
940
941 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000991- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
992 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
993 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
994 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
995 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
996 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
997 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001060
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001061- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1062 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1063 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1064 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1065 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1066 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1067 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1068 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1069 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1070 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1071 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1072 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1073 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1074 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1075 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1076 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1077 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1078 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1079 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1080 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1081
1082 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1083 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1084 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1085 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1086 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1087 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1088 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1089 access to the underlying socket used.
1090
1091 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1092 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1093 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001094
1095 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001096 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001097 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1098 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1099
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001100 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1101 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1379
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001380- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1381 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1382 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1383 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1384 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1385 module is:
1386 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1387
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001388- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1389 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1390 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1391 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1392 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1393 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1394
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001395- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

1413 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1414 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001415

1432 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001433
