70Core and Builtins
71-----------------
72
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000073- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
74
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000075- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
76 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
77 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
78 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
79 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
80 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
81 64bit values.
82
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000083- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
84 error.
85
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000086- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
87 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
88 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
89 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
90
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000091- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
92 a unicode argument.
93
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000094- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
95
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000096- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000097 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000098 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
99
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000100- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000101 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
102 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
103 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
104 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
105 type object.
106
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000107- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
108
109- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
110
111- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
112
113- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
114
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000115- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
116 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
117
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000118- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
119 ``__delslice__``.
120
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000121- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
122 library targets in the Makefile.
123
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000124- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
125 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
126 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
127
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +0000128C-API

134-------
135
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000136- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
137 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
138

142
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000143- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
144 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
145 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
146
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +0000147- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

176 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
177 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
178 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
179
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000180- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

243
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000244*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000245
246Core and Builtins
247-----------------
248
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000249- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
250 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
251 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
252 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
253 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
254 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
255 default.
256
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000257- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
258 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
259
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000260- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
261 value again.
262
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000263- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
264 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
265 and introducing s*.
266
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000267- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
268 object was stored in the freelist.
269
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000270- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
271 ValueError consistently across platforms.
272
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000273- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
274 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
275 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
276
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000277- Apply security patches from Apple.
278
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000279- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
280 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
281
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000282- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
283 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
284
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000285- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
286 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
287 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
288
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000289- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
290 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
291 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
292 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
293 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
294 failed have been fixed.
295
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000296Library
297-------
298
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000299- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
300
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000301- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
302 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
303
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000304- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
305 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
306 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
307
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000308- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
309 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
310 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
311 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
312 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
313 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
314
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000315- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
316 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
317
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000318- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
319

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000440Core and Builtins
441-----------------
442
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000443- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
444 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
445 an integer using operator.index().
446
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000447- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
448 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
449
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000450- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
451 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
452
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000453- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
454 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
455 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
456
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000457- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
458 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
459 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
460 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
461 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
462 level.
463
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000464- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
465 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
466 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
467 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
468 all imports from that module to fail.
469
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000470- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
471 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
472 new-style classes.
473
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000474- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
475 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
476 another file in sys.stdout.
477
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000478- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
479 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
480 another thread's dictionary.
481
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000482- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
483 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
484 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
485 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
486 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
487 10, -1).
488
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000489- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
490 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
491 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000492
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000493- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

502 error when they failed.
503
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000504- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000529- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
530 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000531 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000532 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
533 merged into trunk.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001003- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1004 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1005 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1006 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1007 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1008 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1009 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001073- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1074 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1075 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1076 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1077 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1078 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1079 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1080 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1081 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1082 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1083 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1084 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1085 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1086 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1087 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1088 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1089 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1090 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1091 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1092 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1093
1094 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1095 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1096 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1097 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1098 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1099 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1100 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1101 access to the underlying socket used.
1102
1103 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1104 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1105 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001106
1107 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001108 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1110 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1111
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001112 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1113 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1391
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001392- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1393 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1394 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1395 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1396 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1397 module is:
1398 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1399
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001400- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1401 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1402 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1403 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1404 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1405 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1406
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001407- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1408 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1409 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1410 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1411 PyObject_Format().
1412
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001413- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1414 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1415 state.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001424- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1425 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1426 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001427
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001428- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1429 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1430 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001431
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001432- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
