8=============================================
9
10*Release date: XX-AUG-2006*
11
12Core and builtins
13-----------------
14
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +000015- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
16 the Python dll again.
17
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +000018- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
19 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
20 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
21 will be regenerated.
22
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +000023- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
24 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
25 immediately popped off the stack.
26
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +000027- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().
28
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +000029
30Library
31-------
32
33- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
34 str(exception) raised an exception.
35
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +000036- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
37 generated for nested functions.

57================================
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +000058
Anthony Baxter5d32a9f2006-08-02 07:43:09 +000059*Release date: 03-AUG-2006*
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +000060
61Core and builtins
62-----------------
63
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +000064- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t, it previously
65 returned a long (see PEP 353).
66
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +000067- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
68
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +000069- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
70 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
71 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
72
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +000073- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
74 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
75
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +000076- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
77 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
78 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
79 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
80
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +000081- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
82 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
83 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
84 the code to make that compiler happy again.
85
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +000086- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.
87
Martin v. Löwisd22968a2006-07-24 11:54:53 +000088- Patch #1232023: Stop including current directory in search
89 path on Windows.
90
Neal Norwitze1fdb322006-07-21 05:32:28 +000091- Fix some potential crashes found with failmalloc.
92
Neal Norwitze7563102006-07-17 01:00:16 +000093- Fix warnings reported by Klocwork's static analysis tool.
94
Neal Norwitz84be93b2006-07-16 01:50:38 +000095- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code within a function
96 had more than 255 blank lines.
97
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +000098- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
99 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
100
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000101- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000102 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000103 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000104
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000105- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
106 The Python core compiles again then, and, in a build without threads, the
107 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
108 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
109
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000110- Bug #1525447: build on MacOS X on a case-sensitive filesystem.
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000111
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000112
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000113Library
114-------
115
Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +0000116- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
117 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
118
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000119- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
120 KeyboardInterrupt.
121
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +0000122- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
123 shutil.copytree on Windows
124
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000125- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
126 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
127
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000128- Rename of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done to
129 make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
130 #1513611, and probably others.
131
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000132- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
133 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
134
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000135- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
136 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
137 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
138 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
139 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
140
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +0000141- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and are now kept
142 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].
Martin v. Löwis997ceff2006-07-27 06:38:16 +0000143
Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +0000144- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
145
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000146- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names correctly
147 with title().
148
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000149- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
150 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
151
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000152- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
153
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000154- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
155 value in the traceback module.
156
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000157- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
158
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000159- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
160
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000161- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
162 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
163 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
164 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
165 tuple pre-2.4.
166
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000167- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
168
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000169- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
170 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
171 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
172 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
173 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
174 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
175 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
176 charset and language parts).
177
178 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
179 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
180
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000181- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
182
183- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
184 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
185
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000186- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
187 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
188 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
189 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.
190
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000191
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000192Extension Modules
193-----------------
194
Neal Norwitz9b0ca792006-08-02 06:46:21 +0000195- Patch #1519025 and bug #926423: If a KeyboardInterrupt occurs during
196 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
197 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
198
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000199- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more
200 openbsd target platforms.
201
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000202- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had
203 a memory leak, affecting pickles and deep copies.
204
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000205- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by
Andrew M. Kuchling10c2b552006-07-26 17:22:21 +0000206 Paul Eggert.
207
Martin v. Löwisbda0dde2006-07-24 10:26:33 +0000208- Patch #1448199: Release interpreter lock in _winreg.ConnectRegistry.
209
Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000210- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
211 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
212 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
213
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000214- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000215 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000216 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
217
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000218- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
219 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000220
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000221- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
222 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
223
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000224- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
225 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
226 sleepycat API allows.
227
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000228- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
229 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
230
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000231Tests
232-----
233
234- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
235 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
236 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
237
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000238- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
239 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
240 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.
Tim Peters3e246a82006-07-27 15:09:20 +0000241
Martin v. Löwis0907f4d2006-07-30 14:09:47 +0000242Build
243-----
244
245- Bug #1439538: Drop usage of test -e in configure as it is not portable.
246
Ronald Oussoren26cad082006-08-01 21:00:57 +0000247Mac
248---
249
250- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
251 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
252
253- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
254 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
255 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users
256 expect.
257

268 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
269
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000270- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned

275
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +0000276- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
277 and atof().
278
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000279- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to

281 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000282
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000283- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
284
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000285- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
286 now ints rather than longs.
287
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000288- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
289 started after line 256.
290
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000291- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
292 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
293 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
294 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
295 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
296 an extension.
297

305
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000306- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +0000307 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
308 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.
309

313
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000314- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
315 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
316 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
317
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000318- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

345 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
346 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
347
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000348- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

373- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
374 integer or long, without range checking.
375
376- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
377 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
378 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
379
380- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
381 with the --without-threads option.

Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000400 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
401 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
402
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000403- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

433Core and builtins
434-----------------
435
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000436- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
437 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
438 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
439
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000440- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
441 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
442
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000443- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
444
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000445- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000446 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000447
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000448- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
449 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
450 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
451 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
452 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
453
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000454- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
455 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
456
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000457- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
458 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
459 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
460 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
461 requested.
462
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000463- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
464 away like they were in Python 2.4.
465
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000466- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
467 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
468 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
469
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000470- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
471 Unicode 4.1.
472
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000473- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
474 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
475 fewer open calls on startup.
476
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000477- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
478 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
479 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
480 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
481 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
482
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000483- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
484 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
485 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
486 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
487
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000488- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
489
490- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
491 "base" parameter.
492
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000493- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
494 objects.
495
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000496- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
497 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
498 C library function.
499
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000500- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
501
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000502- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
503
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000504- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
505 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
506 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
507 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
508
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000509- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
510
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000511- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
512
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000513- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
514 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
515 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
516 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
517
518- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
519 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
520 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
521 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

529
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000530- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
531 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
532

534
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +0000535- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
536 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
537 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
538 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000550- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
551 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
552
553- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
554 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
555
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000556- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
557 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
558 Windows platforms).
559
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000560- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
561 may deadlock.

579
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000580- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

629
Greg Ward7f547402006-06-11 00:40:49 +0000630- Bug #1361643: fix textwrap.dedent() so it handles tabs appropriately;
631 clarify docs.
632
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +0000633- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
634
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +0000635- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
636 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
637 function when writing wrapper functions.
638
Tim Petersd6a9eef2006-06-05 01:48:21 +0000639- The optional ``isprivate`` argument to ``doctest.testmod()``, and the

Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +0000641
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +0000642- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
643 for lookup.
644
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +0000645- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
646 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
647 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
648 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
649 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
650
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +0000651- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

669 tarfiles.
670
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000671- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and
672 stdout arguments, making it possible to redirect input and output
673 for remote debugging.
674
675- Patch #1484695: Update the tarfile module to version 0.8. This fixes
676 a couple of issues, notably handling of long file names using the
677 GNU LONGNAME extension.

722=================================
723
724*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
725
726Core and builtins
727-----------------
728
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +0000729- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
730 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
731
732 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
733 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
734 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
735 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
736 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
737
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +0000738- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
739
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +0000740- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
741 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
742 multiple times.
743
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +0000744- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
745 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
746 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
747
748- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
749 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
750
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000751- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
752 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
753 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +0000754 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000755 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +0000756
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000757 def __hash__(self):
758 return id(self) # WRONG
759
760 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
761 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +0000762 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000763 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
764 necessarily so.
765
766- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000767 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000768 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000769 #1454844)
770
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +0000771- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
772 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
773 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
774 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
775 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000776
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +0000777Extension Modules

782
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +0000783- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
784 fails with an error condition.
785

789 the cachesize parameter.
790
791- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
792 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
793
794- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
795 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +0000796
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +0000797- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
798 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

802
Peter Astrand7d1d4362006-07-14 14:04:45 +0000803- Bug #1223937: subprocess.CalledProcessError reports the exit status
804 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
805 abusing errno.
806
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +0000807- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

809 or exception is ignored).
810
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +0000811- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and

Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +0000814- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
815 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
816 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
817 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
818
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +0000819- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
820 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
821
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +0000822- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
823 .zip or .egg files.
824
825- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
826 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
827 in the filesystem or zip files.
828
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +0000829- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

831 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
832 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +0000833

893 the current Decimal context.
894
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +0000895- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
896 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
897 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
898 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

948
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +0000949- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
950 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
951 (closes patch #1170323).
952
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +0000953- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
954 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
955 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
956 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
957 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
958 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
959 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +0000960 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
961 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +0000962 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
963 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
964
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +0000965- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
966 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
967 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
968
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +0000969- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
970 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
971 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
972 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
973
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +0000974- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
975
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +0000976- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
977 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
978 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
979 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
980
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +0000981- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
982 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
983 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
984 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
985 absolute_import' is used.
986
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +0000987- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
988 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
989 exceptions.
990
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +0000991- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +0000992 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
993
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +0000994- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +0000995
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +0000996- Patch 1433928:
997 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
998 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
999 KeyError.
1000
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001001- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1002 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1003 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001004 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001005 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1006 - The built-in file type.
1007 - The thread.LockType type.
1008 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1009 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1010 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001011
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001012- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1013 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1014
1015 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1016 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1017
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001018- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1019
1020- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1021 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1022 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1023 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1024 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001025
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001026- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1027 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1028 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1029
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001030- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1031 configure would break checking curses.h.
1032
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001033- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1034 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1035
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001036- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1037
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001038- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1039
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001040- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1041
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001042- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1043 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1044
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001045- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00001046 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001047 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1048
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001049- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1050 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001051 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001052

1057
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001058- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001059 and long longs.
1060
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001061- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001062 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001063 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001064
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001065- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1066 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1067 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1068 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1069 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1070
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001071- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1076 syntax tree is available for read-only (non-compile) access
Martin v. Löwis577b5b92006-02-27 15:23:19 +00001077 to Python code; an _ast module was added.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00001078

1090
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001091- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001092 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1093 was empty.
1094
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001095- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1096 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1097
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001098- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001099 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001100
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00001101- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
1102 codes.
1103
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001104- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1105 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1106 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1107
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001108- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1109 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
1110
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00001111- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001112 (fixes bug #1119418).
1113
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001114- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1115
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001116- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1117 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1118
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001119- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1120 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1121 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1122
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001123- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1124
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001125- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1126 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1127
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001128- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1129 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1130 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001131 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001132 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1133 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1134 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1135 realloc.
1136
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001137- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1138 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1139
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001140- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1141 like their int counterparts.
1142
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001143- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1144 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1145 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1146 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1147 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1148
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001149- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1150 serializing floats.
1151
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001152- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1153 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1154 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1155
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001156- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1157 278.
1158
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001159- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1160 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1161 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1162 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001163 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001164 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001165 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001166
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001167- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1168 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1169 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1170 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1171
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001172- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1173 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1174 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1175 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1176 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1177
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001178- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1179 disabled caused a crash.
1180
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001181- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1182 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1183
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001184- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001185 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1186
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001187- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
1188
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001189- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001190 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1191 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1192 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001193
Martin v. Löwis96d743e2005-03-03 23:00:26 +00001194- Patch #1115086: Support PY_LONGLONG in structmember.
1195
Raymond Hettingerb67cc802005-03-03 16:45:19 +00001196- Bug #1155938: new style classes did not check that __init__() was

1198
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001199- Patch #802188: Report characters after line continuation character

1201
Martin v. Löwisff232d72005-03-03 09:24:38 +00001202- Bug #723201: Raise a TypeError for passing bad objects to 'L' format.
1203
Michael W. Hudson8e1afab2005-02-17 14:55:21 +00001204- Bug #1124295: the __name__ attribute of file objects was
1205 inadvertently made inaccessible in restricted mode.
1206
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001207- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001208 an ferror() call.
1209
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001210- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in
1211 list.sort().
1212
Raymond Hettingerc34f8672005-01-02 06:17:33 +00001213- The peephole optimizer now performs simple constant folding in expressions:

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001444 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001445 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001446 module will not be built.

1471
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001472- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1473 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1474 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1475 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1476 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1477 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been

1752
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001753- Enhancements to the csv module:
1754
1755 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00001756 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001757 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001758 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
1759 reporting.
1760 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
1761 dictates.
1762 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00001763 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00001764 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00001765 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
1766 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00001767 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
1768 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00001769 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001770 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
1771 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
1772 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
1773 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
1774 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
1775 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
1776 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
1777 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
1778 without first creating a dialect class.
1779 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
1780 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
1781 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00001782 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001783 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
1784 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00001785 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
1786 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
1787 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
1788 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001789 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
1790 This has been fixed.
1791
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00001792- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
1793 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
1794 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
1795 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
1796
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00001797- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
1798

1800 (Bug #951915).
1801
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00001802- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
1803 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
1804 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00001805 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00001806
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00001807- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
1808
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00001809- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the

1819
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00001820- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
1821
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00001822- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
1823 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
1824 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
1825
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001826- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001827 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001828
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00001829- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
1830 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
1831 tokenizer with very long source lines.
1832
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00001833- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001839
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00001840- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
1841 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
1842
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00001843- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
1844 correctly.
1845
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00001846- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
1847 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
1848 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
1849 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
1850 between two lines.
1851
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00001852- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
1853 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
1854 handlers.
1855
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001856- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00001857 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
1858 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00001860- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
1861 considering it exactly like a '*'.
1862
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00001863- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
1864 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00001865
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00001866- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.

1870
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00001871- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
1872 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00001873 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
1874 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
1875 special classes that use unicode.

1915
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00001916- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
1917 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
1918 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
1919 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
1920 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
1921 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
1922 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
1923 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
1924
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00001925- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
1926 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
1927 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.

1931-----
1932
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00001933- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
1934 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
1935 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
1936 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
1937 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
1938 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
1939 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
1940 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
1941 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
1942 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
1943
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00001944- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
