28 fail.
29

46 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
47 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory

49
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000050- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000061 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
62 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
63 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
64
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000065- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to

81 __future__ import didn't work.
82
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000083- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000084 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000085

91 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
92 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now

349
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000350- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
351
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000352- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
353 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
354 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
355 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
356 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
357 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
358 64bit values.
359
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000360- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
361 error.
362
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000363- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
364 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
365 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
366 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
367
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000368- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
369 a unicode argument.
370
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000371- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000374 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000375 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
376
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000377- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000378 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
379 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
380 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
381 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
382 type object.
383
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000384- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
385
386- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
387
388- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
389
390- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
391
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000392- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
393 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
394
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000395- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000522
523Core and Builtins
524-----------------
525
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000526- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
527 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
528 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
529 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
530 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
531 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
532 default.
533
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000534- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
535 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
536
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000537- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
538 value again.
539
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000540- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
541 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
542 and introducing s*.
543
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000544- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
545 object was stored in the freelist.
546
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000547- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
548 ValueError consistently across platforms.
549
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000550- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
551 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
552 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
553
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000554- Apply security patches from Apple.
555
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000556- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
557 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
558
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000559- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
560 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
561
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000562- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
563 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
564 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
565
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000566- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
567 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
568 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
569 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
570 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
571 failed have been fixed.
572
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000573Library
574-------
575
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000576- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
577
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000578- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
579 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
580
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000581- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
582 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
583 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
584
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000585- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
586 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
587 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
588 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
589 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
590 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
591
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000592- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
593 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
594
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000595- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
596
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000597- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
598
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000599- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
600
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000601- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
602 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
603
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000604- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
605 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
606
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000607- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
608 in a redirect.
609
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000610- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000611 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000612
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000613- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
614 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
615
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000616- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
617 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
618 regular expression.
619
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000620- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now

Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000720- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all

723
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000724- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which

726
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000727- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output

729
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000730- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
731 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
732 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
733
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000734- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
735 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
736 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
737 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
738 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
739 level.
740
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000741- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
742 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
743 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
744 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
745 all imports from that module to fail.
746
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000747- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly

754
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000755- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

757 another thread's dictionary.
758
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000759- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
760 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
761 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
762 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
763 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
764 10, -1).
765
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000766- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000806- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
807 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000808 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000809 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

1215
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001216- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
1217 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +00001218 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001219
1220 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
1221
1222 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
1223
1224 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
1225
1226 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
1227
1228 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001280- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1281 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1282 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1283 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1284 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1285 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1286 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1287 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

1311
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +00001312- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
1313 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
1314 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +00001315

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001329- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +00001330 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
1331 build documentation for more information.
1332
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +00001333- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
1334 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
1335 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
1336 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
1337
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +00001338- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released

1341
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001342- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available,
1343 so the controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical
1344 script environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to
1345 data files.

1348-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001349
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001350- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1351 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1352 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1353 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1354 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1355 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1356 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1357 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1358 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1359 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1360 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1361 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1362 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1363 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1364 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1365 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1366 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1367 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1368 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1369 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1370
1371 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1372 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1373 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1374 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1375 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1376 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1377 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1378 access to the underlying socket used.
1379
1380 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1381 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1382 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001383
1384 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001385 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001386 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1387 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1388
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001389 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1390 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +00001444- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001445 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
1446 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the
1447 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
1448 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'

1679 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1680 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1681 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1682 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1683

1924 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1925 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1926 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1927 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001928 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1929 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001930
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001931- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an

1933 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1934 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1935 method.
