Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +000010*Release date: 18-AUG-2006*
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +000011
12Core and builtins
13-----------------
14
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +000015- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
16 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
17 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
18 to effectively use __index__.
19
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +000020- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
21 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
22
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +000023- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
24
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +000025- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
26 sys.stdin is closed.
27
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +000028- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
29 the Python dll again.
30
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +000031- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
32 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
33 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
34 will be regenerated.
35
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +000036- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
37 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
38 immediately popped off the stack.
39
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +000040- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().
41
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +000042
43Library
44-------
45
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +000046- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
47 already been cleaned up.
48
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +000049- Bug #1112549, DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
50
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +000051- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
52 str(exception) raised an exception.
53
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +000054- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
55 generated for nested functions.
56
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +000057
58Extension Modules
59-----------------
60
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +000061- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.
62 Passing float arguments to struct.pack when integers are expected
63 now triggers a DeprecationWarning.
64
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +000065
66Tests
67-----
68
Neal Norwitz003c9e22006-08-11 06:09:41 +000069- test_mailbox should now work on cygwin versions 2006-08-10 and later.
70
Georg Brandl9908d162006-08-06 07:06:33 +000071- Bug #1535182: really test the xreadlines() method of bz2 objects.
72
Andrew MacIntyre16ee33a2006-08-06 12:37:03 +000073- test_threading now skips testing alternate thread stack sizes on
74 platforms that don't support changing thread stack size.
75
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +000076
Georg Brandl212b5872006-08-05 06:10:54 +000077Documentation
78-------------
79
80- Patch #1534922: unittest docs were corrected and enhanced.
81
82

Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +000091C API
92-----
93
94- Bug #1069160. Internal correctness changes were made to
95 ``PyThreadState_SetAsyncExc()``. A test case was added, and
96 the documentation was changed to state that the return value
97 is always 1 (normal) or 0 (if the specified thread wasn't found).

Anthony Baxter5d32a9f2006-08-02 07:43:09 +0000107*Release date: 03-AUG-2006*
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000108
109Core and builtins
110-----------------
111
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000112- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t, it previously
113 returned a long (see PEP 353).
114
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000115- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
116
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000117- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
118 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
119 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
120
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000121- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
122 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
123
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000124- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
125 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
126 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
127 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
128
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000129- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
130 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
131 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
132 the code to make that compiler happy again.
133
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000134- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.
135
Martin v. Löwisd22968a2006-07-24 11:54:53 +0000136- Patch #1232023: Stop including current directory in search
137 path on Windows.
138
Neal Norwitze1fdb322006-07-21 05:32:28 +0000139- Fix some potential crashes found with failmalloc.
140
Neal Norwitze7563102006-07-17 01:00:16 +0000141- Fix warnings reported by Klocwork's static analysis tool.
142
Neal Norwitz84be93b2006-07-16 01:50:38 +0000143- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code within a function
144 had more than 255 blank lines.
145
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000146- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
147 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
148
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000149- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000150 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000151 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000152
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000153- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
154 The Python core compiles again then, and, in a build without threads, the
155 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
156 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
157
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000158- Bug #1525447: build on MacOS X on a case-sensitive filesystem.
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000159
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000160
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000161Library
162-------
163
Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +0000164- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
165 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
166
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000167- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
168 KeyboardInterrupt.
169
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000170- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +0000171 shutil.copytree on Windows
172
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000173- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
174 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
175
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000176- Rename of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done to
177 make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
178 #1513611, and probably others.
179
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000180- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
181 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
182
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000183- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
184 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
185 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
186 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
187 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
188
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +0000189- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and are now kept
190 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].
Martin v. Löwis997ceff2006-07-27 06:38:16 +0000191
Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +0000192- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
193
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000194- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names correctly
195 with title().
196
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000197- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
198 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
199
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000200- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
201
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000202- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
203 value in the traceback module.
204
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000205- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
206
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000207- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
208
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000209- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
210 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
211 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
212 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
213 tuple pre-2.4.
214
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000215- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
216
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000217- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
218 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
219 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
220 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
221 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
222 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
223 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
224 charset and language parts).
225
226 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
227 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
228
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000229- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
230
231- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
232 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
233
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000234- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
235 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
236 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
237 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.
238
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000239
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000240Extension Modules
241-----------------
242
Neal Norwitz9b0ca792006-08-02 06:46:21 +0000243- Patch #1519025 and bug #926423: If a KeyboardInterrupt occurs during
244 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
245 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
246
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000247- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more
248 openbsd target platforms.
249
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000250- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had
251 a memory leak, affecting pickles and deep copies.
252
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000253- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by
Andrew M. Kuchling10c2b552006-07-26 17:22:21 +0000254 Paul Eggert.
255
Martin v. Löwisbda0dde2006-07-24 10:26:33 +0000256- Patch #1448199: Release interpreter lock in _winreg.ConnectRegistry.
257
Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000258- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
259 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
260 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
261
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000262- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000263 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000264 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
265
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000266- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
267 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000268
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000269- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
270 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
271
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000272- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
273 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
274 sleepycat API allows.
275
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000276- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
277 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
278
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000279Tests
280-----
281
282- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
283 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
284 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
285
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000286- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
287 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
288 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.
Tim Peters3e246a82006-07-27 15:09:20 +0000289
Martin v. Löwis0907f4d2006-07-30 14:09:47 +0000290Build
291-----
292
293- Bug #1439538: Drop usage of test -e in configure as it is not portable.
294
Ronald Oussoren26cad082006-08-01 21:00:57 +0000295Mac
296---
297
298- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
299 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
300
301- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
302 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000303 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users
Ronald Oussoren26cad082006-08-01 21:00:57 +0000304 expect.

335
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000336- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
337 started after line 256.
338
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000339- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
340 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
341 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
342 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
343 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
344 an extension.

361
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000362- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
363 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
364 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
365
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000366- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

395
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000396- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

423
424- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes

Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000447- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000448 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
449 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
450
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000451- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

482Core and builtins
483-----------------
484
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000485- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
486 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
487 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
488
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000489- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
490 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
491
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000492- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
493
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000494- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000495 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000496
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000497- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
498 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
499 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
500 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
501 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
502
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000503- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
504 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
505
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000506- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
507 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
508 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
509 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
510 requested.
511
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000512- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
513 away like they were in Python 2.4.
514
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000515- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
516 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
517 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
518
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000519- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
520 Unicode 4.1.
521
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000522- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
523 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
524 fewer open calls on startup.
525
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000526- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
527 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
528 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
529 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
530 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
531
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000532- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
533 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
534 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
535 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
536
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000537- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
538
539- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
540 "base" parameter.
541
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000542- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
543 objects.
544
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000545- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
546 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
547 C library function.
548
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000549- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
550
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000551- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
552
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000553- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
554 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
555 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
556 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
557
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000558- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
559
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000560- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
561
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000562- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
563 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
564 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
565 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
566
567- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
568 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
569 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
570 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

578
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000579- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
580 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
581

583
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +0000584- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
585 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
586 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
587 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

600 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
601
602- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
603 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
604
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000605- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
606 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
607 Windows platforms).
608
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000609- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

624
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +0000625- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
626 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
627 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
628
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000629- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

666 double-byte encodings.
667
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +0000668- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
669 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
670 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
671 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
672 of the matching pair.
673
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +0000674- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

692 for lookup.
693
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +0000694- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
695 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
696 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
697 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
698 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

771=================================
772
773*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
774
775Core and builtins
776-----------------
777
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +0000778- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
779 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
780
781 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
782 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
783 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
784 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
785 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
786
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +0000787- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
788
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +0000789- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
790 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
791 multiple times.
792
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +0000793- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
794 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
795 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
796
797- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
798 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
799
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000800- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
801 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
802 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +0000803 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000804 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +0000805
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000806 def __hash__(self):
807 return id(self) # WRONG
808
809 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
810 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +0000811 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000812 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
813 necessarily so.
814
815- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000816 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +0000817 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000818 #1454844)
819
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +0000820- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
821 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
822 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
823 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
824 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +0000825
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +0000826Extension Modules

831
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +0000832- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()

841 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
842
843- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
844 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +0000845
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +0000846- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
847 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

850-------
851

853 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
854 abusing errno.
855
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +0000856- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

858 or exception is ignored).
859

865 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
866 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
867
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +0000868- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
869 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
870
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +0000871- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
872 .zip or .egg files.
873
874- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
875 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either

880 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
881 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +0000882

Nick Coghlan27ec1a72006-04-24 04:32:47 +0000938- test_cmd_line now checks operation of the -m and -c command switches
939
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +0000940- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
941 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
942 the current Decimal context.
943
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +0000944- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
945 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
946 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
947 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

974-----------------
975
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +0000976- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
977 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
978
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +0000979- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
980 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
981 end in .PYD.
982
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +0000983- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
984 sys.stdout.encoding.
985
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +0000986- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
987
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +0000988- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
989
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +0000990- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
991
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +0000992- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
993 5.4 and later versions.
994
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +0000995- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
996 now gives a SyntaxError.
997
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +0000998- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
999 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1000 (closes patch #1170323).
1001
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001002- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1003 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1004 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1005 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1006 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1007 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1008 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001009 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1010 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001011 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1012 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1013
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001014- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1015 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1016 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1017
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001018- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1019 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1020 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1021 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1022
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001023- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1024
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001025- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1026 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1027 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1028 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1029
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001030- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1031 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1032 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1033 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1034 absolute_import' is used.
1035
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001036- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1037 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1038 exceptions.
1039
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001040- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001041 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1042
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001043- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001044
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001045- Patch 1433928:
1046 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1047 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1048 KeyError.
1049
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001050- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1051 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1052 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001053 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001054 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1055 - The built-in file type.
1056 - The thread.LockType type.
1057 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1058 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1059 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001060
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001061- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1062 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1063
1064 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1065 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1066
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001067- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1068
1069- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1070 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1071 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1072 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1073 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001074
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001075- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1076 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1077 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1078
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001079- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1080 configure would break checking curses.h.
1081
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001082- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1083 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1084
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001085- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1086
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001087- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1088
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001089- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1090
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001091- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1092 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1093
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001094- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00001095 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001096 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1097
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001098- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1099 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001100 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001101
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001102- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1103 now encodes backslash correctly.
1104
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001105- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1106
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001107- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001108 and long longs.
1109
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001110- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001111 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001112 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001113
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001114- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1115 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1116 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1117 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1118 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1119
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001120- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001121
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001122- Sped up some Unicode operations.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00001123

1125 syntax tree is available for read-only (non-compile) access
Martin v. Löwis577b5b92006-02-27 15:23:19 +00001126 to Python code; an _ast module was added.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00001127
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001128- SF bug #1167751: fix incorrect code being produced for generator expressions.
Neal Norwitz16af7342005-10-21 06:25:33 +00001129 The following code now raises a SyntaxError: foo(a = i for i in range(10))
1130

1134 Provide a warning when a directory is passed on the command line.
1135
Neal Norwitz40d37812005-10-02 01:48:49 +00001136- Fix segfault with invalid coding.
1137
1138- SF bug #772896: unknown encoding results in MemoryError.
1139
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001140- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001141 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1142 was empty.
1143
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001144- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1145 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1146
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001147- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001148 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001149
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00001150- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
1151 codes.
1152
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001153- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1154 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1155 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1156
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001157- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1158 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
1159
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00001160- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001161 (fixes bug #1119418).
1162
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001163- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1164
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001165- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1166 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1167
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001168- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1169 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1170 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1171
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001172- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1173
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001174- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1175 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1176
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001177- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1178 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1179 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001180 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001181 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1182 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1183 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1184 realloc.
1185
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001186- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1187 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1188
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001189- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1190 like their int counterparts.
1191
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001192- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1193 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1194 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1195 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1196 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1197
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001198- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1199 serializing floats.
1200
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001201- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1202 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1203 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1204
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001205- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1206 278.
1207
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001208- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1209 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001216- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1217 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1218 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1219 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.

1224 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1225 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001493 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001494 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001495 module will not be built.

1498 aren't officially supported here, and trying to use them will probably
1499 raise an exception some day. But dicts have been allowed, and "mostly
1500 worked", so support for them won't go away without warning.

1520
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001521- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1522 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1523 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1524 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1525 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1526 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1527 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

1533 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
1534 have been added.

Raymond Hettinger267b8682005-03-27 10:47:39 +00001740- decimal operator and comparison methods now return NotImplemented
1741 instead of raising a TypeError when interacting with other types. This
1742 allows other classes to implement __radd__ style methods and have them
1743 work as expected.
1744
Raymond Hettingerbea3f6f2005-03-15 04:59:17 +00001745- Bug #1163325: Decimal infinities failed to hash. Attempting to

1784 disables recursive traversal through instance attributes, which can
1785 be exploited in various ways.
1786

1799
Martin v. Löwis22b457e2005-01-16 08:40:58 +00001800- os.{SEEK_SET, SEEK_CUR, SEEK_END} have been added for convenience.
1801
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001802- Enhancements to the csv module:
1803
1804 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00001805 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001806 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001807 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
1808 reporting.
1809 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
1810 dictates.
1811 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00001812 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00001813 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00001814 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
1815 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00001816 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
1817 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00001818 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001819 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
1820 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
1821 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
1822 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
1823 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
1824 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
1825 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
1826 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
1827 without first creating a dialect class.
1828 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
1829 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
1830 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00001831 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001832 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
1833 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00001834 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
1835 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
1836 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
1837 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00001838 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
1839 This has been fixed.
1840
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00001841- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
1842 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
1843 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
1844 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
1845
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00001846- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
1847
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00001848- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
1849 (Bug #951915).
1850
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00001851- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
1852 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
1853 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00001854 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00001855
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00001856- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
1857
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00001858- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
1859 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
1860
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00001861- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
1862
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00001863- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.

1868
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00001869- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
1870
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00001871- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
1872 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
1873 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
1874
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001875- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001876 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001877
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00001878- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
1879 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
1880 tokenizer with very long source lines.
1881
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00001882- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
1883 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
1884 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00001885
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00001886- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
1887 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001888
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00001889- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
1890 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
1891
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00001892- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
1893 correctly.
1894
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00001895- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
1896 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
1897 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
1898 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
1899 between two lines.
1900
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00001901- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
1902 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
1903 handlers.
1904
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001905- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00001906 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
1907 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00001908
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00001909- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
1910 considering it exactly like a '*'.
1911
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00001912- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
1913 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00001914
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00001915- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
1916
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00001917- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
1918 touch the recursion limit.
1919
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00001920- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
1921 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00001922 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
1923 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
1924 special classes that use unicode.

1950
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00001951- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
1952 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
1953 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00001954 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00001956- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
1957 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
1958 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
1959
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00001960- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
1961
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00001962- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
1963 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
1964
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00001965- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
1966 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
1967 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
1968 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
1969 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
1970 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
1971 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
1972 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).

1980-----
1981
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00001982- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
1983 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
1984 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
1985 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
1986 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
1987 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
1988 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
1989 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
1990 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
1991 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
1992
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00001993- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
