19 to str, bytes and bytearray could be optimized away by the compiler, letting

25 an existing .py counterpart, override the co_filename attributes of all
26 code objects if the original filename is obsolete (which can happen if the
27 file has been renamed, moved, or if it is accessed through different paths).
28 Patch by Ziga Seilnacht and Jean-Paul Calderone.
29
Georg Brandl734373c2009-01-03 21:55:17 +000030- Issue #4075: Use OutputDebugStringW in Py_FatalError.

42 directory on POSIX systems.
43
44- Issue #4764: IOError.filename is set when trying to open a directory on POSIX
45 systems.
46
47- Issue #4759: None is now allowed as the first argument of

59 print elapsed times, not only when some objects are uncollectable /
60 unreachable. Original patch by Neil Schemenauer.
61
Jeffrey Yasskin69614982008-12-11 05:21:18 +000062- Issue #4589: Fixed exception handling when the __exit__ function of a
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc79c9f762008-12-10 23:56:33 +000063 context manager returns a value that cannot be converted to a bool.
64
Vinay Sajip6badbe92009-01-20 22:49:13 +000065- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Georg Brandld2094602008-12-05 08:51:30 +000066 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still

Antoine Pitrou19fec8b2009-01-21 00:56:37 +000079- Issue #5008: When a file is opened in append mode with the new IO library,
80 do an explicit seek to the end of file (so that e.g. tell() returns the
81 file size rather than 0). This is consistent with the behaviour of the
82 traditional 2.x file object.
83
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0293c802009-01-17 16:46:35 +000084- Issue #3997: zipfiles generated with more than 65536 files could not be

115
116- Issue #4197: doctests in modules loaded via zipimport (or any other PEP
117 302 conformant loader) will now work correctly in most cases (they
118 are still subject to the constraints that exist for all code running
119 from inside a module loaded via a PEP 302 loader and attempting to
120 perform IO operations based on __file__). Original patch by
121 Alexander Belopolsky.

434 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
435 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
436 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent

Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000459 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__

604Core and Builtins
605-----------------
606
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000607- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
608 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
609 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
610 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
611 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
612 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
613 default.
614
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000615- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
616 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
617
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000618- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
619 value again.
620
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000621- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
622 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
623 and introducing s*.
624
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000625- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
626 object was stored in the freelist.
627
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000628- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
629 ValueError consistently across platforms.
630
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000631- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
632 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return

645 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
646
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000647- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
648 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
649 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
650 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
651 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
652 failed have been fixed.

668 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
669 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in

797
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000798Core and Builtins
799-----------------
800
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000801- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
802 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
803 an integer using operator.index().
804
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000805- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
806 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
807
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000808- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
809 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
810
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000811- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
812 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
813 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
814
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000815- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
816 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
817 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
818 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
819 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
820 level.
821
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000822- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
823 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
824 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
825 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
826 all imports from that module to fail.
827
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000828- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
829 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
830 new-style classes.
831
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000832- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
833 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
834 another file in sys.stdout.
835
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000836- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
837 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
838 another thread's dictionary.
839
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000840- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
841 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
842 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
843 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
844 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
845 10, -1).
846
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000847- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
848 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
849 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000850
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000851- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
852 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
853 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

860 error when they failed.
861
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000862- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

872
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000873- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000886
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000887- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
888 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000889 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000890 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
891 merged into trunk.
892
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000893- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000904 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000905
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000906- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
907 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
908
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000909- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001361- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1362 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1363 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1364 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1365 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1366 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1367 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001431- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1432 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1433 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1434 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1435 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1436 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1437 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1438 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1439 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1440 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1441 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1442 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1443 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1444 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1445 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1446 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1447 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1448 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1449 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1450 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1451
1452 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1453 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1454 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1455 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1456 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1457 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1458 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1459 access to the underlying socket used.
1460
1461 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1462 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1463 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001464
1465 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001758- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1759 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1760 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1761 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1762 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1763 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1764
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001765- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00002009 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
