14
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000015- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
16 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
17
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000018- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
19 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.

34Core and Builtins
35-----------------
36
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +000037- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
38 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
39 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
40 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
41 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
42 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
43 default.
44
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +000045- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
46 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
47
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +000048- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
49 value again.
50
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000051- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
52 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
53 and introducing s*.
54
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000055- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
56 object was stored in the freelist.
57
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000058- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
59 ValueError consistently across platforms.
60
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000061- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
62 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
63 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
64
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000065- Apply security patches from Apple.
66
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000067- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
68 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
69
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000070- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
71 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
72
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000073- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
74 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
75 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
76
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000077- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
78 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
79 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
80 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
81 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
82 failed have been fixed.
83
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000084Library
85-------
86
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +000087- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
88
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +000089- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
90 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
91
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +000092- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
93 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
94 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
95
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +000096- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
97 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
98 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
99 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
100 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
101 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
102
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000103- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
104 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
105
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000106- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
107
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000108- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
109
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000110- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
111
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000112- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
113 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
114
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000115- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
116 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
117
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000118- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
119 in a redirect.
120
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000121- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000122 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000123
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000124- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
125 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
126
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000127- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
128 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
129 regular expression.
130
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000131- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
132 thread-safe.
133
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000134- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
135 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
136 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
137
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000138- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
139
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000140- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
141 menu entries were not deleted.
142
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000143- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
144 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
145
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000146- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
147 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
148
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000149- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
150 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
151 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
152
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000153- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
154 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
155 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
156
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000157- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
158 the reload() built-in has been removed.
159
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000160- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000161 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000162 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
163 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
164 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
165 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
166 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000167
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000168- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
169 raised an AttributeError.
170
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000171- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000172 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
173 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000174
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000175- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
176 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
177
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000178- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
179
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000180- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
181 on a closed shelf.

184
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000185- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
186
187- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
188 invalid arguments.
189
190- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
191 with None arguments.
192
193- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
194 configuration files.
195
196- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
197
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000198- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
199 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
200 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
201
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000202- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
203 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
204 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
205

212-------------
213
Nick Coghlan6e8fef02008-08-18 13:14:22 +0000214- Issue #2235: the C API function PyObject_HashNotImplemented and its
215 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
216
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000217- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
218 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
219 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
220 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

227
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000228Core and Builtins
229-----------------
230
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000231- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
232 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
233 an integer using operator.index().
234
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000235- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
236 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
237
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000238- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
239 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
240
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000241- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
242 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
243 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
244
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000245- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
246 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
247 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
248 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
249 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
250 level.
251
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000252- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
253 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
254 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
255 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
256 all imports from that module to fail.
257
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000258- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
259 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
260 new-style classes.
261
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000262- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
263 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
264 another file in sys.stdout.
265
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000266- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
267 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
268 another thread's dictionary.
269
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000270- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
271 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
272 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
273 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
274 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
275 10, -1).
276
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000277- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
278 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
279 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000280
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000281- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
282 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
283 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000284
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000285Library
286-------
287
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000288- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
289 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
290 error when they failed.
291
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000292- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
293
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000294- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
295
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000296- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
297
Georg Brandl86cbf812008-07-16 21:31:41 +0000298- Issue #1608818: Fix misbehavior in os.listdir() if readdir() fails.
299
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000300- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
301 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
302
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000303- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000304
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000305- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
306 a valid dlerror() message.
307
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000308- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
309 incomplete structure was created.
310
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000311- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000790- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
791 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
792 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
793 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
794 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
795 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
796 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
797 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000860- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
861 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
862 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
863 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
864 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
865 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
866 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
867 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
868 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
869 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
870 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
871 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
872 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
873 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
874 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
875 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
876 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
877 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
878 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
879 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
880
881 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
882 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
883 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
884 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
885 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
886 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
887 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
888 access to the underlying socket used.
889
890 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
891 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +00001170 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +00001171
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001172- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1173
1174- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001175
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001176- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001177 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1178
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001179- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1180 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1181 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1182 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1183 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1184 module is:
1185 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1186
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001187- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1188 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1189 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1190 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1191 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1192 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1193
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001194- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1195 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1196 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1197 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1198 PyObject_Format().
1199
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001200- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1201 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1202 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001203
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001204- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001205 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1206 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.

1212 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1213 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001214
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001215- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1216 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1217 to a bound method.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001245- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1246 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1247 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001248

1250 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1251 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1252 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +00001253

2865 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2866 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.

2880 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2881 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2882 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002883

2902- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2903 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2904
2905- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
