11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000015- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
16 object was stored in the freelist.
17
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000018- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
19 ValueError consistently across platforms.
20
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000021- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
22 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
23 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
24
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000025- Apply security patches from Apple.
26
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000027- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
28 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
29
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000030- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
31 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
32
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000033- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
34 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
35 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
36
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000037- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
38 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
39 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
40 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
41 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
42 failed have been fixed.
43
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000044Library
45-------
46
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +000047- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
48 menu entries were not deleted.
49
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +000050- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
51 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
52
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +000053- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
54 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
55
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000056- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
57 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
58 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
59
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000060- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
61 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
62 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
63
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000064- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
65 the reload() built-in has been removed.
66
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000067- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +000068 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon9fc56312008-08-09 23:39:11 +000069 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, DocXMLRPCServer, email, filecmp,
70 fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile, pstats,
71 pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket, subprocess,
72 sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap, threading, tokenize,
Brett Cannon46265862008-08-09 23:34:11 +000073 traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000074
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +000075- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
76 raised an AttributeError.
77
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000078- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +000079 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
80 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000081
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000082- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
83 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
84
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000085- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
86
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +000087- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
88 on a closed shelf.
89
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000090- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
91
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000092- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
93
94- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
95 invalid arguments.
96
97- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
98 with None arguments.
99
100- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
101 configuration files.
102
103- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
104
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000105- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
106 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
107 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
108
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000109- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
110 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
111 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
112
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000113Build
114-----
115
116- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
117
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000118Documentation
119-------------
120
121- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
122 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
123 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
124 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.
125

131
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000132Core and Builtins
133-----------------
134
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000135- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
136 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
137 an integer using operator.index().
138
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000139- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
140 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
141
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000142- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
143 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
144
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000145- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
146 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
147 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
148
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000149- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
150 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
151 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
152 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
153 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
154 level.
155
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000156- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
157 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
158 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
159 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
160 all imports from that module to fail.
161
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000162- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
163 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
164 new-style classes.
165
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000166- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
167 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
168 another file in sys.stdout.
169
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000170- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
171 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
172 another thread's dictionary.
173
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000174- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
175 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
176 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
177 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
178 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
179 10, -1).
180
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000181- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
182 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
183 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000184
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000185- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
186 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
187 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000188
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000189Library
190-------

193
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000194- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
195

199
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000200- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
201 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
202

Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000204
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000205- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
206 a valid dlerror() message.
207
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000208- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000216
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000217- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
218 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000219 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000220 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
221 merged into trunk.
222
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000223- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

228
229- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
230 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000231 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.

237 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
238
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000239- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
240 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

250 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
251 default https port (443).
252

254 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
255 if the new process uses the threading module.
256

290Core and Builtins
291-----------------
292
Brett Cannondea1b562008-06-27 00:31:13 +0000293- Issue #3211: warnings.warn_explicit() did not guard against its 'registry'
294 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
295 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
296 bus error.
297
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca8919fe2008-06-16 19:12:42 +0000298- Issue #3100: Corrected a crash on deallocation of a subclassed weakref which

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000688- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
689 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
690 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
691 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
692 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
693 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
694 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

756-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000757
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000758- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
759 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
760 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
761 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
762 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
763 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
764 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
765 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
766 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
767 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
768 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
769 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
770 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
771 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
772 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
773 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
774 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
775 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
776 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
777 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
778
779 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
780 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
781 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
782 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
783 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
784 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
785 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
786 access to the underlying socket used.
787
788 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
789 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
790 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000791
792 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000793 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000794 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
795 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
796
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000797 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
798 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1076
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001077- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1078 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1079 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1080 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1081 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1082 module is:
1083 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1084
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001085- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1086 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1087 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1088 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1089 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1090 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1091
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001092- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

1096 PyObject_Format().
1097
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001098- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1099 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1100 state.

1110 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1111 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001112
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001113- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001331- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1332 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1333 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1334 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1335 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001336 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1337 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001338
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001339- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
