Barry Warsaw6a0b5592008-08-21 02:12:56 +000011
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000015- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
16
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000017- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
18 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
19 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
20 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
21 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
22 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
23 64bit values.
24
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000025- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
26 error.
27
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000028- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
29 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
30 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
31 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
32
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000033- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
34 a unicode argument.
35
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000036- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
37
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000038- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000039 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000040 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
41
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000042- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000043 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
44 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
45 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
46 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
47 type object.
48
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000049- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
50
51- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
52
53- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
54
55- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
56
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000057- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
58 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
59
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000060- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
61 ``__delslice__``.
62
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000063- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
64 library targets in the Makefile.
65
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000066- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
67 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
68 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
69
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000070C-API

76-------
77
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +000078- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
79 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
80
Guido van Rossume3c4fd92008-09-10 14:27:00 +000081- Issue #3629: Fix sre "bytecode" validator for an end case.

84
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +000085- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
86 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
87 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
88
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +000089- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

118 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
119 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
120 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
121
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000122- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000181What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
182================================
183
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000184*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000185
186Core and Builtins
187-----------------
188
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000189- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
190 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
191 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
192 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
193 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
194 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
195 default.
196
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000197- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
198 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
199
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000200- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
201 value again.
202
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000203- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
204 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
205 and introducing s*.
206
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000207- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
208 object was stored in the freelist.
209
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000210- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
211 ValueError consistently across platforms.
212
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000213- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
214 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
215 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
216
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000217- Apply security patches from Apple.
218
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000219- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
220 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
221
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000222- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
223 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
224
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000225- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
226 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
227 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
228
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000229- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
230 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
231 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
232 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
233 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
234 failed have been fixed.
235
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000236Library
237-------
238
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000239- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
240
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000241- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
242 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
243
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000244- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
245 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
246 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
247
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000248- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
249 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
250 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
251 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
252 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
253 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
254
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000255- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
256 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
257
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000258- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
259
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000260- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
261
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000262- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
263
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000264- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
265 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
266
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000267- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
268 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
269
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000270- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
271 in a redirect.
272
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000273- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000274 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000275
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000276- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
277 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
278
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000279- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
280 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
281 regular expression.
282
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000283- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
284 thread-safe.
285
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000286- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
287 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
288 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
289
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000290- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
291
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000292- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
293 menu entries were not deleted.
294
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000295- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
296 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
297
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000298- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
299 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
300
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000301- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
302 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
303 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
304
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000305- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
306 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000380Core and Builtins
381-----------------
382
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000383- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
384 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
385 an integer using operator.index().
386
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000387- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
388 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
389
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000390- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
391 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
392
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000393- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
394 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
395 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
396
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000397- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
398 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
399 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
400 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
401 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
402 level.
403
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000404- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
405 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
406 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
407 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
408 all imports from that module to fail.
409
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000410- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
411 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
412 new-style classes.
413
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000414- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
415 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
416 another file in sys.stdout.
417
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000418- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
419 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
420 another thread's dictionary.
421
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000422- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
423 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
424 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
425 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
426 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
427 10, -1).
428
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000429- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
430 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
431 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000432
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000433- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000469- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
470 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000471 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000472 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

490

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000943- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
944 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
945 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
946 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
947 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
948 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
949 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
950 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001012
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001013- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1014 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1015 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1016 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1017 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1018 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1019 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1020 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1021 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1022 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1023 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1024 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1025 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1026 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1027 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1028 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1029 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1030 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1031 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1032 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1033
1034 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1035 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1036 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1037 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1038 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1039 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1040 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1041 access to the underlying socket used.
1042
1043 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1044 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1045 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001046
1047 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001048 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001049 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1050 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1051
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001052 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1053 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1331
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001332- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1333 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1334 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1335 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1336 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1337 module is:
1338 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1339
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001340- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1341 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1342 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1343 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1344 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1345 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1346
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001347- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

1351 PyObject_Format().
1352
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001353- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1354 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1355 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001356

1365 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1366 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001367
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001368- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
