Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000013- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
14 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
15 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
16 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
17 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
18 10, -1).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000410- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
411 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
412 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
413 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

415 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
416 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

478-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000479
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000480- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
481 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
482 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
483 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
484 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
485 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
486 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
487 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
488 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
489 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
490 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
491 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
492 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
493 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
494 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
495 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
496 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
497 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
498 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
499 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
500
501 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
502 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
503 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
504 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
505 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
506 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
507 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
508 access to the underlying socket used.
509
510 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
511 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
512 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000513
514 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000515 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

517 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
518
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000519 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
520 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000792- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
793
794- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000795
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000796- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000797 issue 215555 for a discussion.
798
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000799- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
800 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
801 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
802 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
803 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
804 module is:
805 from future_builtins import hex, oct
806
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000807- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
808 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
809 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
810 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
811 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
812 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
813
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000814- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
815 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
816 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
817 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
818 PyObject_Format().
819
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000820- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
821 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
822 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000823
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000824- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000825 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
826 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000827
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000828- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
829 real or imaginary part.
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000830
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000831- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
832 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
833 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000834
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000835- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
836 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
837 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000838
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000839- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
840 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
841
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000842- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
