12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000015- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
16 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
17 instead of throwing a MemoryError.
18
Raymond Hettinger7989a4d2008-12-03 15:42:10 +000019- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__
20 instead of __len__. Behavior now matches other reversed iterators.
21
Benjamin Petersonc078f922008-11-21 22:27:24 +000022- Issue #4367: Python would segfault during compiling when the unicodedata
23 module couldn't be imported and \N escapes were present.
24
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000025- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000026 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
27 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
28 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
29
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000030- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to
31 the bytearray, returned the same bytearray instead of a copy.
32
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc7cfe7ea2008-11-18 22:19:37 +000033- Issue #4317: Fixed a crash in the imageop.rgb2rgb8() function.
34
Benjamin Peterson273c2332008-11-17 22:39:09 +000035- Issue #4230: If ``__getattr__`` is a descriptor, it now functions correctly.
36
Benjamin Peterson6624a9f2008-11-03 15:14:51 +000037- Issue #4048: The parser module now correctly validates relative imports.
38
Benjamin Petersondcee09d2008-10-31 02:16:05 +000039- Issue #4225: ``from __future__ import unicode_literals`` didn't work in an
40 exec statement.
41
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc69a9c5b2008-10-30 21:18:34 +000042- Issue #4176: Fixed a crash when pickling an object which ``__reduce__``
43 method does not return iterators for the 4th and 5th items.
44
Benjamin Petersonbdca9422008-10-26 20:21:13 +000045- Issue #4209: Enabling unicode_literals and the print_function in the same
46 __future__ import didn't work.
47
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000048- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000049 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000050
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000051- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
52 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
53 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
54
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000055- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
56 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
57 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
58 it correctly refers to the initial element.
59
Barry Warsaw12582c92008-10-02 03:33:51 +000060Library
61-------
62
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000063- Issue #4384: Added integration with warnings module using captureWarnings().
64 This change includes a NullHandler which does nothing; it will be of use to
65 library developers who want to avoid the "No handlers could be found for
66 logger XXX" message which can appear if the library user doesn't configure
67 logging.
68
Christian Heimesaa674712008-11-28 11:02:32 +000069- Issue #3741: DISTUTILS_USE_SDK set causes msvc9compiler.py to raise an
70 exception.
71
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd4294172008-11-21 22:05:48 +000072- Issue #4363: The uuid.uuid1() and uuid.uuid4() functions now work even if
73 the ctypes module is not present.

Brett Cannone3d0bf72008-11-15 22:40:44 +000079- httplib.HTTPConnection.putheader() now accepts an arbitrary number of values
80 for any header, matching what the documentation has claimed for a while.

214-----------------
215
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000216- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
217
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000218- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
219 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
220 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
221 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
222 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
223 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
224 64bit values.
225
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000226- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
227 error.
228
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000229- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
230 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
231 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
232 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
233
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000234- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
235 a unicode argument.
236
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000237- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000240 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000241 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
242
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000243- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000244 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
245 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
246 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
247 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
248 type object.
249
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000250- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
251
252- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
253
254- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
255
256- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
257
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000258- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
259 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
260
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000261- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
262 ``__delslice__``.
263
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000264- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
265 library targets in the Makefile.
266

268 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
269 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

Brett Cannon1eaf0742008-09-02 01:25:16 +0000318- Issue 3602: Moved test.test_support.catch_warning() to
319 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
320 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
321 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
322
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000323- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

389Core and Builtins
390-----------------
391
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000392- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
393 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
394 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
395 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
396 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
397 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
398 default.
399
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000400- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
401 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
402
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000403- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
404 value again.
405
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000406- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
407 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
408 and introducing s*.
409
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000410- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
411 object was stored in the freelist.
412
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000413- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
414 ValueError consistently across platforms.
415
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000416- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
417 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
418 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
419
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000420- Apply security patches from Apple.
421
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000422- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
423 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
424
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000425- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
426 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
427
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000428- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
429 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
430 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
431
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000432- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
433 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
434 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
435 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
436 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
437 failed have been fixed.
438
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000439Library
440-------
441
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000442- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
443
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000444- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
445 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
446
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000447- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
448 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
449 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
450
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000451- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
452 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
453 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
454 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
455 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
456 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
457
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000458- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
459 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
460
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000461- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
462
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000463- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
464
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000465- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
466
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000467- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
468 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
469
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000470- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
471 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
472
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000473- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
474 in a redirect.
475
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000476- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000477 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000478
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000479- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
480 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
481
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000482- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
483 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
484 regular expression.
485
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000486- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
487 thread-safe.
488
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000489- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
490 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
491 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
492
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000493- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
494
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000495- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
496 menu entries were not deleted.
497
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000498- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
499 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
500
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000501- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
502 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
503
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000504- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
505 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
506 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
507
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000508- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
509 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
510 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
511
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000512- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
513 the reload() built-in has been removed.
514
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000515- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000516 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000517 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

521 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000522
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000523- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
524 raised an AttributeError.
525
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000526- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000527 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
528 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000529
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000530- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
531 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.

543 invalid arguments.
544
545- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
546 with None arguments.

548- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
549 configuration files.
550
551- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
552
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000553- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
554 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
555 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
556
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000557- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
558 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
559 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.

570 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
571
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000572- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
573 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
574 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
575 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

582
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000583Core and Builtins
584-----------------
585
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000586- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
587 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
588 an integer using operator.index().
589
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000590- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
591 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
592
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000593- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
594 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
595
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000596- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
597 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
598 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
599
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000600- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
601 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
602 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
603 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
604 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
605 level.
606
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000607- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
608 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
609 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
610 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
611 all imports from that module to fail.
612
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000613- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
614 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
615 new-style classes.
616
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000617- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
618 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
619 another file in sys.stdout.
620
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000621- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
622 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
623 another thread's dictionary.
624

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001146- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1147 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1148 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1149 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1150 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1151 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1152 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1153 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001195- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +00001196 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
1197 build documentation for more information.
1198
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +00001199- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
1200 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
1201 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
1202 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
1203
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +00001204- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
1205 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
1206 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
1207
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001208- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available,
1209 so the controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical
1210 script environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to
1211 data files.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001216- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1217 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1218 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1219 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1220 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1221 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1222 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1223 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1224 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1225 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1226 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1227 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1228 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1229 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1230 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1231 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1232 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1233 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1234 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1235 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1236
1237 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1238 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1239 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1240 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1241 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1242 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1243 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1244 access to the underlying socket used.
1245
1246 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1247 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1248 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001249
1250 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001251 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001252 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1253 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1254
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001255 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1256 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +00001310- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001311 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
1312 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the
1313 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
1314 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'
1315 codec.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001531
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001532- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001533 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1534
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001535- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1536 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1537 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1538 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1539 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1540 module is:
1541 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1542
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001543- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1544 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1545 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1546 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1547 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1548 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1549
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001550- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1551 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1552 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1553 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1554 PyObject_Format().
1555
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001556- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1557 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1558 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001559
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001560- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001567- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1568 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1569 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001570
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001571- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1572 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1573 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001574
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001575- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1576 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1577

1587 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001588
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001589- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001601- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1602 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1603 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001604
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001605- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1606 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1607 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1608 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001712- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences
1713 smaller than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now,
1714 automatically shifts from ints to longs.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001716- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the
1717 possibility of having a self-referential tuple, which is possible
1718 from C code. Nor did object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str
1719 could do something that could lead to an inifinite recursion.
1720 Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(), respectively, fixed the
1721 issues.

1724 'print' statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released
1725 as needed. Now PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with
1726 various tp_print implementations of the built-in types and those in

Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +00001736- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001737 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger
1738 recursion depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001789- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1790 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1791 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1792 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1793 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001794 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1795 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001796
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001797- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
1798 object to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back
1799 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1800 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()

3216 lists in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree``

3221 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new

3237 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
3238 incorrect results with huge strings.
