16
Christian Heimes288e89a2008-01-18 18:24:07 +000017- Issue #1865: Bytes as an alias for str and b"" as an alias "" were
18 added.
19
Christian Heimesc94e2b52008-01-14 04:13:37 +000020- sys.float_info / PyFloat_GetInfo: The floating point information
21 object was converted from a dict to a specialized structseq object.
22
Christian Heimesf31b69f2008-01-14 03:42:48 +000023- Patch #1816: Added sys.flags structseq. It exposes the status of most
24 command line arguments and PYTHON* environment variables.
25
26- Object/structseq.c: Implemented new structseq representation. The patch
27 makes structseqs (e.g. the return value of os.stat) more readable.
Christian Heimes9c201962008-01-14 03:33:52 +000028

38 and sys.dont_write_bytecode attribute. All these can be set to forbid Python
39 to attempt to write compiled bytecode files.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce0b76952008-01-04 02:04:15 +000041- Improve some exception messages when Windows fails to load an extension
42 module. Now we get for example '%1 is not a valid Win32 application' instead
43 of 'error code 193'.
44
Christian Heimes8267d1d2008-01-04 00:37:34 +000045- Bug #1481296: Fixed long(float('nan'))!=0L.
46

51 and INF. float("nan"), float("inf") and float("-inf") now work on every
52 platform with IEEE 754 semantics.
53
Raymond Hettingerfd7ed402007-12-18 21:24:09 +000054- Compiler now generates simpler and faster code for dictionary literals.
55 The oparg for BUILD_MAP now indicates an estimated dictionary size.
56 There is a new opcode, STORE_MAP, for adding entries to the dictionary.
57
Christian Heimesdb3d6cb2007-12-16 21:39:43 +000058- Issue #1638: %zd configure test fails on Linux
59
Christian Heimes90e10e72007-12-14 02:35:23 +000060- Issue #1620: New property decorator syntax was modifying the decorator
61 in place instead of creating a new decorator object.
62
Christian Heimes284d9272007-12-10 22:28:56 +000063- Issue #1580: New free format floating point representation based on
64 "Floating-Point Printer Sample Code", by Robert G. Burger. For example
65 repr(11./5) now returns '2.2' instead of '2.2000000000000002'.

74 inside packages with the -m switch via a new module level
75 __package__ attribute.
76
Christian Heimesdfdfaab2007-12-01 11:20:10 +000077- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
78 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
79
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdafd32b2007-11-30 20:51:40 +000080- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
81 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
82 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
83 results with huge strings.
84
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbe49a902007-11-30 20:37:22 +000085- Issue #1402: Fix a crash on exit, when another thread is still running, and

96
Nick Coghlan327a39b2007-11-18 11:56:28 +000097- Patch #1739468: Directories and zipfiles containing a __main__.py file can
98 now be directly executed by passing their name to the interpreter. The
99 directory/zipfile is automatically inserted as the first entry in sys.path.
100
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0d75f092007-11-13 21:54:28 +0000101- Issue #1265: Fix a problem with sys.settrace, if the tracing function uses a
102 generator expression when at the same time the executed code is closing a
103 paused generator.
104
Raymond Hettinger1760c8a2007-11-08 02:52:43 +0000105- sets and frozensets now have an isdisjoint() method.

Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000111- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
112 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
113 shifts from ints to longs.
114
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000115- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
116 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
117 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
118 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
119 respectively, fixed the issues.
120
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000121- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
122 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
123 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
124 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
125
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +0000126- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their
127 throw() method even though string exceptions no longer allowed.
128
Brett Cannona0c05512007-09-10 21:38:27 +0000129- Issue #1096: Prevent a segfault from getting the repr of a very deeply nested
130 list by using the recursion counter.
131
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000132- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
133 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
134 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
135 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
136 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
137
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000138- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

162 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
163
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000164- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
165 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.
166
Georg Brandl2134e752007-05-21 20:34:16 +0000167- Patch #1686487: you can now pass any mapping after '**' in function
168 calls.
169
Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000170- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or

Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000180 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
181
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000182- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

187
Georg Brandl5cb76c12007-03-21 09:00:39 +0000188- Patch #1682205: a TypeError while unpacking an iterable is no longer
189 masked by a generic one with the message "unpack non-sequence".
190
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000191- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
192
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000193- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
194 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
195 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
196 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
197 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000198 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
199 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000200
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000201- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
202 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
203 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
204 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
205
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000206- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.

216 name.
217
Georg Brandl5240d742007-03-13 20:46:32 +0000218- Patch #1444529: the builtin compile() now accepts keyword arguments.
219
Georg Brandl7b9c5552007-03-12 14:30:05 +0000220- Bug #1678647: write a newline after printing an exception in any
221 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
222
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +0000223- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
224 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
225 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
226
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +0000227- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
228 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).
229
Žiga Seilnacht89032082007-03-11 15:54:54 +0000230- Patch #1675981: remove unreachable code from ``type.__new__()`` method.
231
Collin Wintere38051d2007-03-09 20:33:07 +0000232- Patch #1491866: change the complex() constructor to allow parthensized
233 forms. This means complex(repr(x)) now works instead of raising a
234 ValueError.
235
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +0000236- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
237 makes the filenames the warning module prints much more sensible when
238 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
239
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +0000240- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
241 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
242 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
243 on other exceptions or normal program exit.

246
Georg Brandl098cd692007-03-06 12:17:50 +0000247- Bug #1674503: close the file opened by execfile() in an error condition.
248
Georg Brandl0fca97a2007-03-05 22:28:08 +0000249- Patch #1674228: when assigning a slice (old-style), check for the
250 sq_ass_slice instead of the sq_slice slot.
251
Neal Norwitz88516a62007-02-26 22:41:45 +0000252- When printing an unraisable error, don't print exceptions. before the name.
253 This duplicates the behavior whening normally printing exceptions.

256
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +0000257- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
258 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.

Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001437 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1438 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1439 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1440 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1441 exception, logged, etc.
1442
1443 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1444 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.

1449 with new-style classes.
1450
1451- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1452 classic classes.
1453
1454- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1455 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1456 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1457 to effectively use __index__.

1466
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +00001467- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
1468 the Python dll again.
1469
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001470- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event

1487
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001488- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to

1595
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001596- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously

Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001599- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1600
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001601- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1602 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1603 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1604
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001605- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1606 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1607
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001608- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1609 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1610 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1611 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1612
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001613- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1614 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1615 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1616 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1617
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +00001618- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

1632
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001633- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001634 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001635 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001638 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001639 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

1669
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001670- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1671 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1672 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1673 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1674 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1675
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001676- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001694- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1695
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001696- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1697 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1698 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1699 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1700 tuple pre-2.4.
1701
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001702- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1703
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001704- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1705 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1706 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1707 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1708 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1709 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1710 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1711 charset and language parts).
1712
1713 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1714 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1715

1717
1718- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a

1752
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001753- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

1771 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1772
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001773- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

1822
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001823- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1824 started after line 256.
1825
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001826- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1827 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1828 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1829 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1830 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1831 an extension.

1848
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001849- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,

1878
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001879- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1880 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1881 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1882
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001883- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1893 now.
1894
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001895Extension Modules

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001898- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1899 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1900 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001901
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001902- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible

Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001935 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1936 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1937
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001938- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1970-----------------
1971
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001972- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1973 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1974 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1975
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001976- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1977 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1978
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001979- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1980
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001981- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001982 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001983
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001984- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1985 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1986 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1987 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1988 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1989
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001990- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1991 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1992
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001993- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1994 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1995 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1996 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1997 requested.
1998
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001999- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
2000 away like they were in Python 2.4.
2001
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00002002- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
2003 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
2004 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
2005
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00002006- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
2007 Unicode 4.1.
2008
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00002009- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
2010 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
2011 fewer open calls on startup.
2012
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00002013- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
2014 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
2015 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
2016 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
2017 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
2018
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00002019- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
2020 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
2021 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
2022 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
2023
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00002024- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
2025
2026- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
2027 "base" parameter.
2028
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00002029- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
2030 objects.
2031
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00002032- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
2033 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
2034 C library function.
2035
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00002036- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode

Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00002038- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
2039
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00002040- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
2041 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
2042 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
2043 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
2044
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00002045- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
2046

2048
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00002049- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
2050 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
2051 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
2052 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
2053
2054- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
2055 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
2056 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
2057 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

2072 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
2073 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
2074 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

2087 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
2088
2089- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
2090 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
2091
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00002092- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

2094 Windows platforms).
2095
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002096- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

2113 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
2114 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
2115
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00002116- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

2153 double-byte encodings.
2154
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00002155- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
2156 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
2157 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
2158 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
2159 of the matching pair.
2160
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00002161- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,
2162 description, and epilog.

2170
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00002171- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
2172 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
2173 function when writing wrapper functions.
2174

2176 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00002177
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00002178- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
2179 for lookup.
2180
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00002181- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
2182 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
2183 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
2184 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
2185 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
2186
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00002187- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

2205 tarfiles.
2206
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002207- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

2263-----------------
2264
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00002265- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
2266 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
2267
2268 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
2269 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
2270 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

2272 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
2273
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00002274- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
2275
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00002276- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
2277 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
2278 multiple times.
2279
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00002280- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
2281 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
2282 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
2283
2284- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
2285 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
2286
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002287- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
2288 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
2289 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002290 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002291 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00002292
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002293 def __hash__(self):
2294 return id(self) # WRONG
2295
2296 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
2297 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002298 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002299 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
2300 necessarily so.
2301
2302- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002303 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002304 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002305 #1454844)
2306
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002307- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
2308 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
2309 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
2310 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
2311 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002312
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00002313Extension Modules
2314-----------------
2315
Martin v. Löwis7e75f1a2006-04-15 08:35:59 +00002316- Patch #1191065: Fix preprocessor problems on systems where recvfrom

Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002427- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2428 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2429 the current Decimal context.
2430
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002431- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2432 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2433 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2434 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

2461-----------------
2462
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002463- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2464 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2465
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002466- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2467 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2468 end in .PYD.
2469
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002470- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2471 sys.stdout.encoding.
2472
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002473- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2474
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002475- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2476
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002477- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2478
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002479- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2480 5.4 and later versions.
2481
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002482- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2483 now gives a SyntaxError.
2484
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002485- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2486 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2487 (closes patch #1170323).
2488
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002489- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2490 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2491 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2492 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2493 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2494 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2495 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002496 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2497 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002498 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2499 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2500
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002501- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2502 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2503 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2504
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002505- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2506 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2507 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2508 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2509
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002510- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2511
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002512- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2513 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2514 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2515 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2516
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002517- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2518 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2519 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2520 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2521 absolute_import' is used.
2522
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002523- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2524 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2525 exceptions.
2526
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002527- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002528 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2529
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002530- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002531
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002532- Patch 1433928:
2533 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2534 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2535 KeyError.
2536
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002537- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2538 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2539 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002540 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002541 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2542 - The built-in file type.
2543 - The thread.LockType type.
2544 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2545 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2546 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002547
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002548- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2549 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2550
2551 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2552 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2553
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002554- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2555
2556- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2557 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2558 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2559 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2560 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002561
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002562- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2563 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2564 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2565
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002566- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2567 configure would break checking curses.h.
2568
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002569- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2570 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2571
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002572- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.

2575
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002576- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2577
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002578- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2579 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2580

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002583 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2584
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002585- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2586 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002587 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002588
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00002589- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
2590 now encodes backslash correctly.

2596
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002597- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002598 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002599 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002600
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002601- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2602 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2603 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2604 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2605 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)

2626
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002627- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002628 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
2629 was empty.
2630
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00002631- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
2632 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
2633
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002634- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

2651
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00002652- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
2653 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
2654
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002655- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2656 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2657 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2658
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002659- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
2660
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00002661- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
2662 reference counts in some error exit cases.
2663
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002664- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2665 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2666 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002667 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002668 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2669 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2670 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2671 realloc.
2672
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00002673- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
2674 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
2675
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00002676- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
2677 like their int counterparts.
2678
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002679- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2680 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2681 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
2682 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
2683 for a longer write-up of the problem).
2684
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00002685- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
2686 serializing floats.
2687
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002688- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2689 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2690 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
2691
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00002692- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
2693 278.
2694
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002695- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2696 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2697 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2698 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002699 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002700 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00002701 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002702
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002703- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
2704 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
2705 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
2706 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2707
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002708- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
2709 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
2710 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2711 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
2712 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2713
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002714- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
2715 disabled caused a crash.
2716
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00002717- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
2718 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
2719
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002720- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00002721 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
2722

2724
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002725- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00002726 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
2727 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
2728 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

2742
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002743- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002744 an ferror() call.
2745
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002746- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002756
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00002757- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
2758 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
2759 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
2760
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00002761- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
2762 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
2763 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2764
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002765- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2766 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2767 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2768 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2769 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002980 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002981 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002982 module will not be built.

3007
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00003008- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
3009 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
3010 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
3011 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
3012 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
3013 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
3014 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

3020 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
3021 have been added.

3107 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
3108 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

3288
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003289- Enhancements to the csv module:
3290
3291 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00003292 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00003293 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003294 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
3295 reporting.
3296 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
3297 dictates.
3298 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003299 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00003300 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003301 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
3302 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00003303 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
3304 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00003305 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003306 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
3307 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
3308 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
3309 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
3310 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
3311 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
3312 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
3313 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
3314 without first creating a dialect class.
3315 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
3316 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
3317 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00003318 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003319 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
3320 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00003321 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
3322 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
3323 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
3324 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003325 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
3326 This has been fixed.
3327
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00003328- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
3329 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
3330 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
3331 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
3332
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00003333- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
3334
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00003335- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
3336 (Bug #951915).
3337
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003338- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
3339 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
3340 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00003341 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003342
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00003343- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
3344
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00003345- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
3346 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
3347
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00003348- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

3355
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00003356- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
3357
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00003358- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
3359 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
3360 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
3361
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003362- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00003363 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003364
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00003365- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
3366 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
3367 tokenizer with very long source lines.
3368
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00003369- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
3370 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
3371 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00003372
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003373- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
3374 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003375
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003376- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3377 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
3378
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003379- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
3380 correctly.
3381
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003382- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3383 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3384 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3385 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3386 between two lines.
3387
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003388- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3389 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3390 handlers.
3391
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003392- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003393 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3394 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003396- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
3397 considering it exactly like a '*'.
3398
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00003399- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
3400 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003401
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00003402- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
3403
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00003404- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
3405 touch the recursion limit.
3406
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00003407- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
3408 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003409 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3410 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3411 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00003438- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
3439 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
3440 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00003441 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00003443- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
3444 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
3445 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.

3448
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00003449- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
3450 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
3451
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003452- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3453 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3454 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3455 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3456 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3457 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3458 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3459 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
3460
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00003461- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
3462 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
3463 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
3464 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

3467-----
3468
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003469- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3470 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3471 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3472 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3473 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3474 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3475 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3476 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3477 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3478 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
3479
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00003480- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00003484- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
3485 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
3486 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
3487 mappings.
