18
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +000019- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This

21 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
22
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +000023- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
24 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
25 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
26 on other exceptions or normal program exit.
27
Georg Brandl00cd8182007-03-06 18:41:12 +000028- Patch #1638879: don't accept strings with embedded NUL bytes in long().

39
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +000040- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
41 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.
42
Brett Cannonf5bee302007-01-23 23:21:22 +000043- Bug #1377858: Fix the segfaulting of the interpreter when an object created
44 a weakref on itself during a __del__ call for new-style classes (classic
45 classes still have the bug).

116
Brett Cannon9adeab72006-09-20 18:34:28 +0000117- Bug #1551432: Exceptions do not define an explicit __unicode__ method. This

Jeremy Hyltoncca75402007-02-27 18:33:31 +0000149- Add new requirements for metaclasses. 1) If type or a subclass of type
150 occurs in __bases__, it must occur before any non-type bases, e.g.
151 before regular classes. 2) If you assign to __bases__, you may not
152 change the metaclass. Many more illegal assignments to __bases__
153 are now checked and raise TypeErrors. This changed fixed at least
154 one known crash.

173
Georg Brandl9caadf82007-03-08 18:37:31 +0000174- unittest now verifies more of its assumptions. In particular, TestCase
175 and TestSuite subclasses (not instances) are no longer accepted in
176 TestSuite.addTest(). This should cause no incompatibility since it
177 never made sense with ordinary subclasses -- the failure just occurred

655Core and builtins
656-----------------
657
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000658- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000659 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
660 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000661
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000662 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
663 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
664 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
665 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
666 exception, logged, etc.
667
668 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
669 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000670
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000671- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
672
673- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
674 with new-style classes.
675
676- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
677 classic classes.
678
679- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
680 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
681 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
682 to effectively use __index__.
683
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000684- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
685 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
686
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000687- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

691
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000692- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
693 the Python dll again.
694
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000695- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
696 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
697 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
698 will be regenerated.
699
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000700- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
701 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
702 immediately popped off the stack.

Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000710- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
711 generated for generator expressions.
712
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000713- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
714 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
715 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
716 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
717
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000718- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000719 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
720 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000721 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000722

725
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000726- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000727 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000728 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
729 duplicate UUIDs.
730
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000731- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
732 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
733
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000734- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.

761
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000762- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now

832
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000833- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
834 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
835 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
836 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
837
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000838- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
839 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
840 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000859 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000860 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000892- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
893 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
894 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
895 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
896 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
897
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000898- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +0000899 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].

902
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +0000903- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
904 title().

Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000906- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
907 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
908
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000909- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
910
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000911- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
912 value in the traceback module.
913
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000914- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
915
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000916- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
917
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000918- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
919 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
920 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
921 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
922 tuple pre-2.4.
923
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000924- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
925
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000926- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
927 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
928 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
929 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
930 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
931 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
932 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
933 charset and language parts).
934
935 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
936 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
937
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000938- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
939
940- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
941 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
942
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000943- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
944 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
945 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
946 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

953 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
954 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
955
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000956- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more
957 openbsd target platforms.
958
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000959- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had
960 a memory leak, affecting pickles and deep copies.
961
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000962- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by

966
Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000967- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
968 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
969 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
970
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000971- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000972 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000973 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
974
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000975- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
976 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000977
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000978- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
979 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
980
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000981- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
982 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
983 sleepycat API allows.
984
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000985- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
986 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
987
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000988Tests
989-----
990
991- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
992 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
993 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
994
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000995- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
996 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
997 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

1006
1007- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
1008 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1009
1010- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1011 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001012 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1025 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
1026
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001027- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1028 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1029
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001030- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
1031 be released.
1032
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +00001033- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
1034 and atof().
1035
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001036- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1037 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
1038 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001039
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001040- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1041
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001042- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1043 now ints rather than longs.
1044
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001045- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1046 started after line 256.
1047
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001048- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1049 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1050 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1051 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1052 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1053 an extension.

1062
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001063- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +00001064 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
1065 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.

1070
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001071- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1072 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1073 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1074
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001075- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1082 degrees and radians.
1083
Martin v. Löwis4c4300d2006-07-03 10:05:30 +00001084- Reimplement turtle.circle using a polyline, to allow correct
Martin v. Löwis2b88f632006-07-03 10:19:49 +00001085 filling of arcs.
Martin v. Löwis4c4300d2006-07-03 10:05:30 +00001086

1091 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
1092
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +00001093- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted
1094 attribute values.
1095
1096- Bug #853506: Fix IPv6 address parsing in unquoted attributes in
1097 sgmllib ('[' and ']' were not accepted).
1098
Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +00001099- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
1100
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001101- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1102 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1103 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1104
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001105- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally
1106 statement (bug #1509132).
1107
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +00001108- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.
1109
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001110- A bug was fixed in logging.config.fileConfig() which caused a crash on
1111 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
1112
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001113- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1114 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1115 now.
1116
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001117Extension Modules
1118-----------------
1119
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001120- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1121 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1122 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001123
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001124- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1125 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
1126
1127- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
1128 on non-Windows platforms.
1129
1130- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
1131 integer or long, without range checking.
1132
1133- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1134 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1135 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1136
1137- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1138 with the --without-threads option.
1139
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001140- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

1155
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001156- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001157 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1158 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1159
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001160- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1191Core and builtins
1192-----------------
1193
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001194- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1195 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1196 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1197
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001198- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1199 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1200
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001201- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1202
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001203- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001204 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001205
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001206- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1207 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1208 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1209 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1210 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1211
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001212- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1213 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1214
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001215- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1216 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1217 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1218 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1219 requested.
1220
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001221- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1222 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1223
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001224- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1225 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1226 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1227
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001228- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1229 Unicode 4.1.
1230
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001231- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1232 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1233 fewer open calls on startup.
1234
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001235- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1236 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1237 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1238 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1239 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1240
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001241- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1242 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1243 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1244 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1245
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001246- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1247
1248- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1249 "base" parameter.
1250
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001251- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1252 objects.
1253
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001254- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1255 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1256 C library function.
1257
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001258- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1259
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001260- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1261
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001262- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1263 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1264 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1265 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1266
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001267- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1268
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001269- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1270
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001271- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1272 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1273 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1274 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1275
1276- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1277 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1278 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1279 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001281Extension Modules
1282-----------------
1283
Trent Mick960a3f82006-06-28 20:30:41 +00001284- Bug #1295808: expat symbols should be namespaced in pyexpat
1285
1286- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
1287
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001288- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1289 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1290
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00001291- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
1292
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001293- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1294 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1295 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1296 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
1297
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00001298- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

1304
Andrew MacIntyre92913322006-06-13 15:04:24 +00001305- Patch #1454481: thread stack size is now tunable at runtime for thread
1306 enabled builds on Windows and systems with Posix threads support.
1307
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001308- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
1309 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1310
1311- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1312 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1313
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001314- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1315 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1316 Windows platforms).
1317
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001318- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1319 may deadlock.
1320
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00001321- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
1322 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1323
1324- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1325 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF
1326 patch numbers 1494885 and 1494902]

1333
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001334- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1335 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1336 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1337
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001338- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1339 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1340 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1341
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001342- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001343 now works reliably. It has been updated to use automatic BerkeleyDB

1375 double-byte encodings.
1376
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001377- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1378 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1379 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1380 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1381 of the matching pair.
1382
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001383- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1392
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001393- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1394 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1395 function when writing wrapper functions.
1396

Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001400- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1401 for lookup.
1402
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001403- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1404 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1405 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1406 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1407 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1408
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001409- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1427 tarfiles.
1428
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001429- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001496- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1497
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001498- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1499 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1500 multiple times.
1501
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001502- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1503 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1504 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1505
1506- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1507 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1508
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001509- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1510 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1511 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001512 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001513 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001514
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001515 def __hash__(self):
1516 return id(self) # WRONG
1517
1518 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1519 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001520 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001521 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1522 necessarily so.
1523
1524- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001525 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001526 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001527 #1454844)
1528
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001529- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1530 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1531 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1532 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1533 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

1550 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1551
1552- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1553 as older versions cause excessive test failures.

1563 abusing errno.
1564
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001565- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1566 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1567 or exception is ignored).
1568
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001569- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1570 caught inside exit handlers.
1571
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001572- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1573 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1574 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1575 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1576
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001577- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1578 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1579
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001580- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1581 .zip or .egg files.
1582
1583- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1584 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1585 in the filesystem or zip files.
1586
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001587- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

1646
Nick Coghlan27ec1a72006-04-24 04:32:47 +00001647- test_cmd_line now checks operation of the -m and -c command switches
1648
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001649- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1650 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1651 the current Decimal context.
1652
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001653- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1654 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1655 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1656 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1684
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001685- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1686 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1687
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001688- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1689 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1690 end in .PYD.
1691
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001692- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1693 sys.stdout.encoding.
1694
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001695- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1696
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001697- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1698
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001699- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1700
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001701- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1702 5.4 and later versions.
1703
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001704- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1705 now gives a SyntaxError.
1706
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001707- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1708 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1709 (closes patch #1170323).
1710
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001711- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1712 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1713 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1714 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1715 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1716 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1717 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001718 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1719 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001720 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1721 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1722
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001723- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1724 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1725 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1726
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001727- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1728 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1729 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1730 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1731
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001732- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1733
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001734- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1735 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1736 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1737 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1738
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001739- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1740 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1741 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1742 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1743 absolute_import' is used.
1744
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001745- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1746 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1747 exceptions.
1748
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001749- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001750 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1751
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001752- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001753
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001754- Patch 1433928:
1755 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1756 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1757 KeyError.
1758
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001759- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1760 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1761 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001762 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001763 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1764 - The built-in file type.
1765 - The thread.LockType type.
1766 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1767 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1768 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001769
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001770- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1771 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1772
1773 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1774 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1775
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001776- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1777
1778- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1779 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1780 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1781 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1782 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001783
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001784- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1785 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .

1848
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001849- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001850 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1851 was empty.
1852
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001853- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be

1875 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1876
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001877- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1878 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1879 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1880
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001881- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1882
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001883- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1884 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1885
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001886- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1887 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1888 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001889 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001890 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1891 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1892 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1893 realloc.
1894
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001895- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1897
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001898- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1899 like their int counterparts.
1900
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001901- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1902 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1903 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1904 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1905 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1906
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001907- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1908 serializing floats.
1909
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001910- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1911 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1912 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1913
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001914- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1915 278.
1916
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001917- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1918 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1919 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1920 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001921 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001922 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001923 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001924
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001925- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1926 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1927 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1928 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1929
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001930- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1931 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1932 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1933 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1934 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1935
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001936- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1937 disabled caused a crash.
1938
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001939- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1940 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1941
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001942- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001943 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1944
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001945- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
1946
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001947- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001948 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1949 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1950 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

1964
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001965- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001966 an ferror() call.
1967
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001968- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

1973
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00001974- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
1975
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00001976- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption
1977 in calls to os.read().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001978
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001979- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal

1981 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1982
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001983- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1984 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1985 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1986
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001987- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1988 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1989 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1990 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1991 the same thread id).

2232 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2233 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of

2323 historic MD5 and SHA1 unsuitable for cryptographic-strength applications.
2324 In <http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-December/058850.html>
2325 Ronald L. Rivest offered this advice for Python:
2326
2327 "The consensus of researchers in this area (at least as
2328 expressed at the NIST Hash Function Workshop 10/31/05),
2329 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
2330 that research should continue, and other alternatives may
2331 arise from this research. The larger SHA's also seem OK."

2510
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002511- Enhancements to the csv module:
2512
2513 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002514 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002515 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002516 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2517 reporting.
2518 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2519 dictates.
2520 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002521 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002522 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002523 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2524 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002525 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2526 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002527 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002528 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2529 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2530 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2531 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2532 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2533 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2534 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2535 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2536 without first creating a dialect class.
2537 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2538 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2539 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002540 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002541 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2542 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002543 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2544 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2545 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2546 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002547 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2548 This has been fixed.
2549
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002550- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2551 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2552 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2553 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2554
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002555- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2556
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002557- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2558 (Bug #951915).
2559
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002560- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2561 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2562 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002563 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002564
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002565- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2566

2602 correctly.
2603
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002604- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2605 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2606 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2607 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2608 between two lines.
2609
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002610- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2611 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2612 handlers.
2613
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002614- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002615 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2616 encoding instead of a unicode string.

2628
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002629- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2630 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002631 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2632 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2633 special classes that use unicode.

2659
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002660- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2661 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2662 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002663 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002665- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2666 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2667 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2668
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002669- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2670
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002671- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2672 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2673
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002674- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2675 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2676 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2677 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2678 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2679 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2680 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2681 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2682
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002683- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2684 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2685 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2686 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2689-----
2690
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002691- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2692 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2693 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2694 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2695 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2696 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2697 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2698 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2699 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2700 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2701
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002702- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

2707 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2708 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
