67Core and Builtins
68-----------------
69
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000070- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
71
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000072- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
73 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
74 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
75 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
76 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
77 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
78 64bit values.
79
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000080- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
81 error.
82
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000083- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
84 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
85 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
86 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
87
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000088- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
89 a unicode argument.
90
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000091- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
92
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000093- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000094 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000095 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
96
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000097- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000098 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
99 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
100 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
101 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
102 type object.
103
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000104- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
105
106- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
107
108- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
109
110- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
111
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000112- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
113 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
114
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000115- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
116 ``__delslice__``.
117
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000118- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
119 library targets in the Makefile.
120
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000121- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
122 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
123 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
124

131-------
132
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000133- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
134 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
135

139
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000140- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
141 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
142 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
143
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +0000144- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

173 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
174 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
175 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
176
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000177- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

240
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000241*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000242
243Core and Builtins
244-----------------
245
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000246- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
247 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
248 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
249 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
250 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
251 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
252 default.
253
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000254- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
255 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
256
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000257- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
258 value again.
259
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000260- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
261 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
262 and introducing s*.
263
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000264- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
265 object was stored in the freelist.
266
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000267- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
268 ValueError consistently across platforms.
269
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000270- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
271 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
272 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
273
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000274- Apply security patches from Apple.
275
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000276- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
277 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
278
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000279- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
280 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
281
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000282- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
283 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
284 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
285
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000286- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
287 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
288 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
289 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
290 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
291 failed have been fixed.
292
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000293Library
294-------
295
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000296- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
297
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000298- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
299 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
300
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000301- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
302 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
303 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
304
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000305- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
306 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
307 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
308 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
309 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
310 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
311
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000312- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
313 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
314
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000315- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
316
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000317- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
318
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000319- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.

439
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000440- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
441 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
442 an integer using operator.index().
443
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000444- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
445 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
446
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000447- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
448 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
449
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000450- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
451 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
452 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
453
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000454- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
455 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
456 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
457 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
458 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
459 level.
460
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000461- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
462 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
463 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
464 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
465 all imports from that module to fail.
466
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000467- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
468 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
469 new-style classes.
470
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000471- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

473 another file in sys.stdout.
474
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000475- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

477 another thread's dictionary.
478
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000479- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
480 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
481 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
482 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
483 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
484 10, -1).
485
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000486- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
487 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
488 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000489
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000490- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000526- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
527 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000528 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000529 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001000- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1001 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1002 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1003 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1004 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1005 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1006 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1007 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

1068-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001069
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001070- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1071 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1072 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1073 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1074 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1075 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1076 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1077 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1078 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1079 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1080 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1081 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1082 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1083 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1084 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1085 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1086 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1087 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1088 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1089 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1090
1091 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1092 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1093 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1094 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1095 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1096 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1097 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1098 access to the underlying socket used.
1099
1100 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1101 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1102 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001103
1104 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001105 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001106 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1107 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1108
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001109 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1110 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1388
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001389- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1390 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1391 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1392 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1393 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1394 module is:
1395 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1396
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001397- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1398 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1399 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1400 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1401 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1402 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1403
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001404- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1405 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1406 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1407 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1408 PyObject_Format().
1409
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001410- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1411 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent

1422 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1423 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001424
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001425- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1644 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1645 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
