13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcad9b5992008-12-10 23:22:49 +000015- Issue #4597: Fixed exception handling when the __exit__ function of a
16 context manager returns a value that cannot be converted to a bool.
17
Jeffrey Yasskinffd42cf2008-12-10 07:35:02 +000018- Issue #4597: Fixed several opcodes that weren't always propagating
19 exceptions.
20
Mark Dickinson826f3fe2008-12-05 21:55:28 +000021- Issue #4445: Replace "sizeof(PyStringObject)" with
22 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
23 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
24 (on average) per string allocation.
25
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000026- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
27 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
28 instead of throwing a MemoryError.
29
Raymond Hettinger7989a4d2008-12-03 15:42:10 +000030- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__
31 instead of __len__. Behavior now matches other reversed iterators.
32
Benjamin Petersonc078f922008-11-21 22:27:24 +000033- Issue #4367: Python would segfault during compiling when the unicodedata

35
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000036- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000037 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
38 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
39 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
40
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000041- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to
42 the bytearray, returned the same bytearray instead of a copy.
43
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc7cfe7ea2008-11-18 22:19:37 +000044- Issue #4317: Fixed a crash in the imageop.rgb2rgb8() function.

54 method does not return iterators for the 4th and 5th items.
55
Benjamin Petersonbdca9422008-10-26 20:21:13 +000056- Issue #4209: Enabling unicode_literals and the print_function in the same
57 __future__ import didn't work.
58
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000059- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000060 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000061
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000062- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
63 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
64 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
65
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000066- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
67 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
68 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
69 it correctly refers to the initial element.
70
Antoine Pitrouae5bece2008-12-06 21:29:24 +000071- Issue #4509: Various issues surrounding resize of bytearray objects to
72 which there are buffer exports.

Vinay Sajip6831d6b2008-12-04 20:32:18 +000096- Issue #4384: Added logging integration with warnings module using
97 captureWarnings(). This change includes a NullHandler which does nothing;
98 it will be of use to library developers who want to avoid the "No handlers
99 could be found for logger XXX" message which can appear if the library user

248
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000249- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
250
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000251- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
252 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
253 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
254 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
255 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
256 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
257 64bit values.
258
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000259- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
260 error.
261
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000262- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
263 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
264 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
265 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
266
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000267- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
268 a unicode argument.

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000273 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000274 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
275
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000276- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000277 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
278 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
279 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
280 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
281 type object.
282
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000283- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
284
285- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
286
287- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
288
289- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
290
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000291- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
292 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
293
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000294- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
295 ``__delslice__``.
296

422Core and Builtins
423-----------------
424
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000425- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
426 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
427 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
428 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
429 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
430 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
431 default.
432
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000433- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
434 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
435
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000436- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
437 value again.
438
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000439- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
440 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
441 and introducing s*.
442
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000443- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
444 object was stored in the freelist.
445
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000446- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
447 ValueError consistently across platforms.
448
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000449- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
450 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
451 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
452
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000453- Apply security patches from Apple.
454
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000455- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
456 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
457
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000458- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
459 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
460
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000461- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
462 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
463 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
464
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000465- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
466 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
467 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
468 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
469 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
470 failed have been fixed.
471
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000472Library
473-------
474
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000475- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
476
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000477- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
478 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
479
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000480- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
481 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
482 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
483
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000484- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
485 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
486 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
487 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
488 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
489 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
490
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000491- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
492 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
493
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000494- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
495
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000496- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
497
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000498- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
499
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000500- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
501 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
502
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000503- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
504 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
505
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000506- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
507 in a redirect.
508
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000509- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000510 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000511
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000512- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
513 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
514
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000515- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
516 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
517 regular expression.
518
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000519- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
520 thread-safe.
521
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000522- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
523 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
524 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
525
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000526- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
527
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000528- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
529 menu entries were not deleted.
530
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000531- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
532 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
533
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000534- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
535 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
536
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000537- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
538 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
539 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
540
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000541- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
542 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
543 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
544
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000545- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
546 the reload() built-in has been removed.
547

Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000556- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
557 raised an AttributeError.
558

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000560 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
561 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000562
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000563- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification

585
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000586- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a

588 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
589
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000590- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

620 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
621 an integer using operator.index().
622
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000623- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which

625
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000626- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output

628
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000629- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
630 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
631 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
632
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000633- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
634 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
635 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
636 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
637 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
638 level.
639
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000640- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
641 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
642 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
643 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
644 all imports from that module to fail.
645
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000646- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly

656 another thread's dictionary.
657
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000658- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
659 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
660 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
661 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
662 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
663 10, -1).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001179- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1180 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1181 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1182 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1183 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1184 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1185 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1186 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001249- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1250 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1251 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1252 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1253 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1254 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1255 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1256 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1257 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1258 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1259 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1260 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1261 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1262 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1263 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1264 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1265 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1266 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1267 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1268 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1269
1270 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1271 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1272 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1273 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1274 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1275 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1276 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1277 access to the underlying socket used.
1278
1279 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1280 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1281 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001282
1283 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001284 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1286 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1287
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001288 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1289 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001564
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001565- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001566 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1567
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001568- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1569 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1570 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1571 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1572 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1573 module is:
1574 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1575
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001576- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1577 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1578 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1579 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1580 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1581 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1582
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001583- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1584 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1585 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1586 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1587 PyObject_Format().
1588
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001589- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1590 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1591 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001592
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001593- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001594 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001600- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1601 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1602 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001603
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001604- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1605 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1606 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001607
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001608- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1609 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1610

1619 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1620 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001621
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001622- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001634- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1635 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1636 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001637
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001638- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1639 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1640 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1641 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
