Anthony Baxterb4096662006-08-16 03:42:26 +0000297*Release date: 17-AUG-2006*
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000298
299Core and builtins
300-----------------

303
304- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
305
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000306- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000307 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
308 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000309
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000310 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
311 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
312 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
313 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
314 exception, logged, etc.
315
316 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
317 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000318
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000319- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

323
324- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
325 classic classes.

Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000343- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
344 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
345 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
346 will be regenerated.

470
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000471- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously

Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000474- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
475
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000476- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
477 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
478 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
479
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000480- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
481 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
482
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000483- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
484 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
485 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
486 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
487
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000488- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
489 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
490 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
491 the code to make that compiler happy again.
492
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000493- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

507
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000508- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000509 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000510 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000512- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000513 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the

534
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000535- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done

541
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000542- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
543 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
544 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
545 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``

565
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000566- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
567
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000568- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
569 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
570 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
571 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
572 tuple pre-2.4.
573
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000574- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
575
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000576- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
577 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
578 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
579 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
580 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
581 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
582 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
583 charset and language parts).
584
585 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
586 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
587
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000588- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
589
590- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
591 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
592
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000593- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
594 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
595 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
596 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000617- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
618 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
619 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
620
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000621- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +0000622 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +0000623 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
624
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000625- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
626 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000627
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000628- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
629 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
630
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +0000631- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
632 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
633 sleepycat API allows.
634
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000635- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
636 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.
637
Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +0000638Tests
639-----
640
641- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
642 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
643 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
644
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000645- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
646 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
647 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

655---
656
657- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
658 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
659
660- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
661 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000662 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

Neil Schemenauer6ec6ab02006-07-09 21:19:29 +0000674- Bug #1441486: The literal representation of -(sys.maxint - 1)
675 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
676
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000677- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
678 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
679
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000680- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely
681 be released.
682

684 and atof().
685
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000686- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
687 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
688 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000689
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000690- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
691
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000692- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
693 now ints rather than longs.
694
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000695- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
696 started after line 256.
697
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000698- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
699 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
700 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
701 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
702 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
703 an extension.

720
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000721- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
722 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
723 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
724
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000725- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

750
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000751- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
752 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
753 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
754
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000755- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally
756 statement (bug #1509132).
757
Neal Norwitz60373cd2006-06-22 06:30:50 +0000758- The wsgiref package is now installed properly on Unix.

761 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
762
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000763- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
764 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
765 now.
766
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000767Extension Modules
768-----------------
769
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000770- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
771 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
772 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000773
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000774- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
775 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
776
777- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
778 on non-Windows platforms.
779
780- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
781 integer or long, without range checking.
782
783- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
784 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
785 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
786
787- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
788 with the --without-threads option.
789
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000790- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
791 access, again.
792

794 a KeyboardInterrupt.
795
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +0000796- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and

805
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000806- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000807 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
808 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
809
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000810- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
811 with spaces in it.
812
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000813- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
814 of Tcl/Tk.
815
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000816- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

841Core and builtins
842-----------------
843
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000844- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
845 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
846 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
847
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000848- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
849 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
850
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000851- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
852
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000853- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000854 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000855
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000856- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
857 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
858 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
859 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
860 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
861
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000862- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
863 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
864
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000865- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
866 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
867 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
868 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
869 requested.
870
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000871- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
872 away like they were in Python 2.4.
873
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000874- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
875 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
876 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
877
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000878- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
879 Unicode 4.1.
880
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000881- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
882 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
883 fewer open calls on startup.
884
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000885- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
886 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
887 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
888 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
889 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
890
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000891- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
892 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
893 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
894 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
895
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000896- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
897
898- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
899 "base" parameter.
900
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000901- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
902 objects.
903
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000904- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
905 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
906 C library function.
907
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000908- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
909
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000910- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
911
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000912- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
913 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
914 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
915 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
916
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000917- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
918
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000919- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
920
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000921- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
922 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
923 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
924 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
925
926- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
927 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
928 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
929 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

962 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
963
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000964- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

987
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000988- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001027- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1028 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1029 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1030 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1031 of the matching pair.

1048 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001049
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001050- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1051 for lookup.
1052
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001053- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1054 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1055 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1056 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1057 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1135-----------------
1136
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001137- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1138 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1139
1140 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1141 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1142 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1144 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1145
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001146- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1147
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001148- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1149 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1150 multiple times.
1151
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001152- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1153 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1154 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1155
1156- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1157 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1158
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001159- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1160 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1161 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001162 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001163 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001164
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001165 def __hash__(self):
1166 return id(self) # WRONG
1167
1168 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1169 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001170 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001171 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1172 necessarily so.
1173
1174- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001175 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001176 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001177 #1454844)
1178
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001179- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1180 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1181 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1182 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1183 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001184
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001185Extension Modules

1189 is a macro.
1190
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001191- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1192 fails with an error condition.
1193
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001194- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1195
1196- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1197 the cachesize parameter.
1198
1199- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1200 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1201
1202- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1203 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001204
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001205- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1206 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1212 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1213 abusing errno.
1214
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001215- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1216 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1217 or exception is ignored).
1218
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001219- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1220 caught inside exit handlers.
1221
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001222- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1223 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1224 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1225 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1226
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001227- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when

1298
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001299- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1300 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1301 the current Decimal context.
1302
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001303- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1304 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1305 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1306 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001332Core and builtins
1333-----------------
1334
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001335- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1336 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1337
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001338- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1339 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1340 end in .PYD.
1341
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001342- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1343 sys.stdout.encoding.
1344
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001345- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1346
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001347- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1348
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001349- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1350
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001351- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1352 5.4 and later versions.
1353
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001354- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1355 now gives a SyntaxError.
1356
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001357- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1358 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1359 (closes patch #1170323).
1360
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001361- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1362 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1363 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1364 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1365 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1366 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1367 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001368 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1369 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001370 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1371 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1372
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001373- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1374 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1375 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1376
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001377- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1378 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1379 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1380 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1381
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001382- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1383
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001384- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1385 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1386 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1387 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1388
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001389- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1390 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1391 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1392 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1393 absolute_import' is used.
1394
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001395- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1396 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1397 exceptions.
1398
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001399- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001400 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1401
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001402- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001403
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001404- Patch 1433928:
1405 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1406 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1407 KeyError.
1408
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001409- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1410 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1411 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001412 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001413 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1414 - The built-in file type.
1415 - The thread.LockType type.
1416 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1417 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1418 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001419
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001420- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1421 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1422
1423 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1424 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1425
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001426- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1427
1428- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1429 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1430 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1431 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1432 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001433
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001434- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1435 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1436 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1437
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001438- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1439 configure would break checking curses.h.
1440
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001441- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1442 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1443
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001444- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1445
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001446- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1447
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001448- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1449
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001450- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1451 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1452
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001453- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001455 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1456
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001457- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1458 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001459 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001460
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001461- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1462 now encodes backslash correctly.
1463
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001464- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1465
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001466- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001467 and long longs.
1468
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001469- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001470 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001471 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001472
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001473- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1474 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1475 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1476 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1477 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1478
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001479- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1526
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001527- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1528 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1529 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.

Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001536- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1537 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1538 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001539 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001540 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1541 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1542 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1543 realloc.

1550
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001551- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module

1559
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001560- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,

1568 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1569 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1570 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001575- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1576 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1577 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1578 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1579
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001580- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1581 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1582 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1583 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1584 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1585
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001586- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001852 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001853 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension

1879
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001880- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1881 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1882 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1883 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1884 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1885 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1886 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2160
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002161- Enhancements to the csv module:
2162
2163 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002164 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002165 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002166 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2167 reporting.
2168 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2169 dictates.
2170 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002171 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002172 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002173 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2174 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002175 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2176 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002177 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002178 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2179 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2180 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2181 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2182 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2183 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2184 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2185 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2186 without first creating a dialect class.
2187 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2188 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2189 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002190 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002191 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2192 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002193 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2194 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2195 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2196 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002197 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2198 This has been fixed.
2199
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002200- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2201 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2202 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2203 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2204
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002205- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2206
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002207- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2208 (Bug #951915).
2209
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002210- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2211 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2212 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002213 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002214
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002215- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2216
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002217- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2218 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2219
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002220- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2227
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002228- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2229
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002230- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2231 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2232 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2233
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002234- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002235 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002236
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002237- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2238 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2239 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2240
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002241- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2242 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2243 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002244
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002245- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002247
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002248- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2249 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2250
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002251- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2252 correctly.
2253
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002254- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2255 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2256 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2257 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2258 between two lines.
2259
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002260- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2261 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2262 handlers.
2263
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002264- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002265 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2266 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002267
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002268- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than

2278
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002279- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2280 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002281 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2282 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2283 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002310- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2311 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2312 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002313 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002315- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2316 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2317 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2318
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002319- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2320
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002321- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2322 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2323
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002324- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2325 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2326 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2327 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2328 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2329 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2330 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2331 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2332
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002333- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2334 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2335 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2336 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002338C API
2339-----
2340
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002341- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2342 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2343 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2344 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2345 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2346 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2347 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2348 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2349 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2350 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2351
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002352- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2353

2355
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002356- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2357 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2358 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2359 mappings.
