338Core and builtins
339-----------------
340
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000341- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000342 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
343 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000344
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000345 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
346 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
347 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
348 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
349 exception, logged, etc.
350
351 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
352 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000353
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000354- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
355
356- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
357 with new-style classes.
358
359- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
360 classic classes.
361
362- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
363 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
364 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
365 to effectively use __index__.
366
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000367- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
368 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
369
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000370- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
371
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000372- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
373 sys.stdin is closed.
374
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000375- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
376 the Python dll again.
377
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000378- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
379 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
380 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
381 will be regenerated.
382
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000383- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
384 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
385 immediately popped off the stack.

Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000393- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
394 generated for generator expressions.
395
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000396- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
397 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
398 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
399 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
400
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000401- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000402 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
403 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000404 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000405
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000406- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises

408
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000409- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000410 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000411 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
412 duplicate UUIDs.
413
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000414- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
415 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
416
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000417- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.

424
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000425- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +0000426
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000427- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
428 str(exception) raised an exception.
429
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +0000430- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be

444
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000445- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now

447 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
448
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000449- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000504- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously

Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000507- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
508
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000509- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
510 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().

512
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000513- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
514 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
515
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000516- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
517 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
518 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
519 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
520
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000521- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
522 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
523 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
524 the code to make that compiler happy again.
525
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000526- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

537
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000538- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and

540
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000541- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000542 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000543 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000545- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000546 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the

558
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000559- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

564
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000565- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
566 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
567
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000568- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000569 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

574
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000575- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
576 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
577 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
578 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
579 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
580
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000581- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

598
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000599- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
600
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000601- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
602 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
603 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
604 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
605 tuple pre-2.4.
606
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000607- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
608
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000609- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
610 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
611 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
612 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
613 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
614 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
615 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
616 charset and language parts).
617
618 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
619 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
620
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000621- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
622
623- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
624 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
625
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000626- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
627 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
628 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
629 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

641
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000642- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

652 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
653
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000654- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

657
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000658- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
659 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000660
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000661- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always

677
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000678- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000723- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
724
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000725- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
726 now ints rather than longs.
727
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000728- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope

730
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000731- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
732 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
733 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
734 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
735 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
736 an extension.

757
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000758- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

783
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000784- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
785 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
786 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
787
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000788- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000803- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
804 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
805 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000806
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000807- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
808 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
809
810- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
811 on non-Windows platforms.
812
813- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
814 integer or long, without range checking.
815
816- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
817 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
818 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
819
820- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
821 with the --without-threads option.
822
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000823- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

838
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000839- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000840 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
841 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
842
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000843- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

875-----------------
876
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000877- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
878 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
879 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
880
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000881- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
882 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
883
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000884- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
885
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000886- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000887 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000888
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000889- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
890 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
891 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
892 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
893 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
894
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000895- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
896 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
897
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000898- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
899 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
900 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
901 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
902 requested.
903
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000904- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
905 away like they were in Python 2.4.
906
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000907- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
908 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
909 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
910
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000911- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
912 Unicode 4.1.
913
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000914- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
915 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
916 fewer open calls on startup.
917
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000918- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
919 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
920 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
921 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
922 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
923
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000924- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
925 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
926 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
927 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
928
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000929- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
930
931- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
932 "base" parameter.
933
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000934- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
935 objects.
936
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000937- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
938 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
939 C library function.
940
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000941- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
942
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000943- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
944
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000945- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
946 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
947 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
948 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
949
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000950- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
951
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000952- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
953
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000954- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
955 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
956 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
957 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
958
959- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
960 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
961 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
962 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

970
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000971- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
972 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
973

975
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +0000976- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
977 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
978 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
979 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
980

992 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
993
994- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
995 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
996
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000997- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
998 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
999 Windows platforms).
1000
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001001- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1002 may deadlock.
1003
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00001004- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
1005 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1006
1007- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1008 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

1016
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001017- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1018 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1019 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1020
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001021- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1022 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1023 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1024
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001025- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

1059
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001060- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1061 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1062 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1063 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1064 of the matching pair.
1065
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001066- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1073
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00001074- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
1075
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001076- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1077 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1078 function when writing wrapper functions.
1079
Tim Petersd6a9eef2006-06-05 01:48:21 +00001080- The optional ``isprivate`` argument to ``doctest.testmod()``, and the
1081 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001082
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001083- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1084 for lookup.
1085
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001086- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1087 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1088 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1089 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1090 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1091
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001092- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1110 tarfiles.
1111
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001112- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and
1113 stdout arguments, making it possible to redirect input and output
1114 for remote debugging.
1115

1168-----------------
1169
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001170- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1171 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1172
1173 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1174 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1175 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1176 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1177 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1178
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001179- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1180
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001181- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1182 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1183 multiple times.
1184
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001185- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1186 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1187 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1188
1189- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1190 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1191
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001192- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1193 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1194 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001195 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001196 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001197
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001198 def __hash__(self):
1199 return id(self) # WRONG
1200
1201 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1202 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001203 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001204 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1205 necessarily so.
1206
1207- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001208 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001209 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001210 #1454844)

Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001212- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1213 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1214 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1215 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1216 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

1331
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001332- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1333 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1334 the current Decimal context.
1335
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001336- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1337 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1338 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1339 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001365Core and builtins
1366-----------------
1367
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001368- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1369 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1370
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001371- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1372 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1373 end in .PYD.
1374
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001375- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1376 sys.stdout.encoding.
1377
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001378- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1379
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001380- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1381
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001382- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1383
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001384- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1385 5.4 and later versions.
1386
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001387- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1388 now gives a SyntaxError.
1389
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001390- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1391 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1392 (closes patch #1170323).
1393
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001394- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1395 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1396 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1397 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1398 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1399 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1400 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001401 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1402 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001403 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1404 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1405
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001406- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1407 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1408 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1409
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001410- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1411 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1412 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1413 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1414
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001415- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1416
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001417- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1418 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1419 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1420 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1421
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001422- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1423 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1424 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1425 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1426 absolute_import' is used.
1427
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001428- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1429 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1430 exceptions.
1431
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001432- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001433 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1434
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001435- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001436
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001437- Patch 1433928:
1438 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1439 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1440 KeyError.
1441
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001442- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1443 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1444 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001445 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001446 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1447 - The built-in file type.
1448 - The thread.LockType type.
1449 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1450 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1451 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001452
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001453- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1454 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1455
1456 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1457 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1458
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001459- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1460
1461- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1462 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1463 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1464 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1465 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001466
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001467- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1468 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1469 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1470
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001471- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1472 configure would break checking curses.h.
1473
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001474- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1475 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1476
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001477- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1478
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001479- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1480
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001481- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1482
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001483- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1484 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1485
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001486- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001488 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1489
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001490- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1491 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001492 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001493
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001494- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1495 now encodes backslash correctly.
1496
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00001497- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
1498

Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001503 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001504 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001505
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001506- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1507 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1508 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1509 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1510 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1511
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001512- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1531
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001532- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001533 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1534 was empty.
1535
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001536- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1537 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1538
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001539- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

1556
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001557- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1558 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1559
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001560- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1561 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1562 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1563
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001564- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1565
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001566- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1567 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1568
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001569- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1570 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1571 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001572 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001573 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1574 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1575 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1576 realloc.
1577
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001578- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1580
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001581- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1582 like their int counterparts.
1583
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001584- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1585 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1586 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see

1589
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001590- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1591 serializing floats.
1592
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001593- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1594 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1595 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1596
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001597- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1598 278.
1599
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001600- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1601 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1602 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1603 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001604 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001605 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001606 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001607
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001608- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1609 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1610 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1611 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1612
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001613- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1614 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1615 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1616 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1617 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1618
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001619- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1620 disabled caused a crash.
1621
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001622- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1623 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1624
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001625- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

1629
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001630- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001631 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1632 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1633 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

1647
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001648- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001649 an ferror() call.
1650
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001651- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

1656
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00001657- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
1658
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00001659- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption

1664 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1665
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001666- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a

1668 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1669
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001670- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1671 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1672 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1673 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1674 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001885 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001886 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001887 module will not be built.

1912
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001913- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1914 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1915 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1916 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1917 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1918 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1919 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2012 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
2013 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

2193
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002194- Enhancements to the csv module:
2195
2196 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002197 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002198 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002199 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2200 reporting.
2201 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2202 dictates.
2203 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002204 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002205 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002206 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2207 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002208 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2209 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002210 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002211 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2212 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2213 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2214 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2215 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2216 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2217 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2218 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2219 without first creating a dialect class.
2220 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2221 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2222 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002223 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002224 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2225 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002226 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2227 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2228 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2229 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002230 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2231 This has been fixed.
2232
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002233- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2234 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2235 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2236 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2237
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002238- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2239

2241 (Bug #951915).
2242
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002243- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2244 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2245 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002246 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002247
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002248- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2249
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002250- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2251 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2252
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002253- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2254

2260
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002261- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2262
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002263- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2264 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2265 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2266
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002267- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002268 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002269
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002270- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2271 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2272 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2273
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002274- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2275 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2276 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002277
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002278- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
2279 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.

Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002281- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2282 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2283
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002284- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2285 correctly.
2286
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002287- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2288 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2289 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2290 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2291 between two lines.
2292
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002293- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2294 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2295 handlers.
2296
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002297- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002298 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2299 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002300
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002301- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2302 considering it exactly like a '*'.
2303
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00002304- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
2305 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002306
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00002307- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
2308
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00002309- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
2310 touch the recursion limit.
2311
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002312- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2313 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002314 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2315 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2316 special classes that use unicode.

Martin v. Löwis64c33dd2006-01-03 07:42:14 +00002332- The sources of zlib are now part of the Python distribution (zlib 1.2.3).
2333 The zlib module is now builtin on Windows.

2336
Martin v. Löwis147fbe52005-08-07 21:09:30 +00002337- Bug #1189330: configure did not correctly determine the necessary
2338 value of LINKCC if python was built with GCC 4.0.
2339
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00002340- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
2341 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
2342
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002343- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2344 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2345 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002346 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002347
Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002348- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2349 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2350 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2351
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002352- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2353
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002354- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2355 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2356
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002357- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2358 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2359 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2360 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2361 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2362 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2363 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2364 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2365
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002366- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2367 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2368 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2369 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002371C API
2372-----
2373
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002374- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2375 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2376 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2377 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2378 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2379 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2380 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2381 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2382 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2383 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2384
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002385- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2386
Raymond Hettinger66517482004-12-03 11:45:13 +00002387- Removed PyRange_New().
2388
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002389- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2390 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2391 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2392 mappings.
