8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000015- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
16 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
17 and introducing s*.
18
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000019- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
20 object was stored in the freelist.
21
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000022- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
23 ValueError consistently across platforms.
24
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000025- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
26 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
27 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
28
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000029- Apply security patches from Apple.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000031- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
32 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
33
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000034- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
35 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000037- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
38 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
39 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
40
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000041- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
42 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
43 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
44 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
45 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
46 failed have been fixed.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000048Library
49-------
50
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +000051- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
52 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
53 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
54
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +000055- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
56 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
57 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
58 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
59 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
60 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
61
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +000062- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
63 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
64
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +000065- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
66
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +000067- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
68
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +000069- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
70
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +000071- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
72 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
73
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +000074- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
75 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
76
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000077- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
78 in a redirect.
79
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000080- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000081 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000082
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000083- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
84 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
85
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000086- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
87 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
88 regular expression.
89
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000090- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
91 thread-safe.
92
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000093- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
94 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
95 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
96
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +000097- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
98
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +000099- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
100 menu entries were not deleted.
101
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000102- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
103 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
104
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000105- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
106 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
107
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000108- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
109 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
110 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
111
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000112- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
113 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
114 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
115
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000116- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
117 the reload() built-in has been removed.
118
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000119- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000120 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000121 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
122 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
123 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
124 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
125 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000126
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000127- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
128 raised an AttributeError.
129
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000130- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000131 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
132 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000133
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000134- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
135 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
136
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000137- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
138
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000139- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
140 on a closed shelf.
141
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +0000142- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
143
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000144- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
145
146- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
147 invalid arguments.
148
149- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
150 with None arguments.
151
152- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
153 configuration files.
154
155- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
156
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000157- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
158 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
159 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
160
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000161- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
162 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
163 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
164

169
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000170Documentation
171-------------
172
Nick Coghlan6e8fef02008-08-18 13:14:22 +0000173- Issue #2235: the C API function PyObject_HashNotImplemented and its
174 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
175
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000176- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
177 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
178 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
179 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

186
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000187Core and Builtins
188-----------------
189
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000190- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
191 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
192 an integer using operator.index().
193
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000194- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
195 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
196
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000197- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
198 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
199
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000200- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
201 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
202 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
203
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000204- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
205 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
206 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
207 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
208 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
209 level.
210
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000211- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
212 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
213 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
214 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
215 all imports from that module to fail.
216
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000217- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
218 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
219 new-style classes.
220
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000221- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
222 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
223 another file in sys.stdout.
224
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000225- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
226 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
227 another thread's dictionary.
228
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000229- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
230 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
231 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
232 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
233 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
234 10, -1).
235
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000236- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
237 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
238 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000239
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000240- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
241 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
242 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000243
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000244Library
245-------
246
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000247- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
248 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
249 error when they failed.
250
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000251- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
252
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000253- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
254
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000255- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.

258
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000259- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
260 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
261
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000262- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000263
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000264- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
265 a valid dlerror() message.
266
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000267- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
268 incomplete structure was created.
269

273
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000274- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000275
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000276- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
277 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000278 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000279 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
280 merged into trunk.
281
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000282- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

287
288- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
289 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000290 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000291
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000292- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000293 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000294
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000295- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
296 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
297
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000298- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
299 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000818- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
819 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
820 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
821 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
822 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
823 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
824 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
825 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
826 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
827 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
828 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
829 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
830 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
831 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
832 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
833 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
834 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
835 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
836 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
837 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
838
839 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
840 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
841 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
842 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
843 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
844 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
845 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
846 access to the underlying socket used.
847
848 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
849 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
850 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000851
852 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000853 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

855 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
856
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000857 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001145- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1146 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1147 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1148 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1149 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1150 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1151
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001152- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001391- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1392 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1393 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1394 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1395 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001396 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1397 as supported by type.__new__().

1401 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1402 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
