10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000015- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
16 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
17 and introducing s*.
18
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000019- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
20 object was stored in the freelist.
21
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000022- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
23 ValueError consistently across platforms.
24
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000025- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
26 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
27 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
28
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000029- Apply security patches from Apple.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000031- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
32 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
33
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000034- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
35 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000037- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
38 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
39 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
40
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000041- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
42 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
43 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
44 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
45 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
46 failed have been fixed.

52
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +000053- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
54 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
55
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +000056- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
57 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
58
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000059- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
60 in a redirect.
61
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000062- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000063 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000064
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000065- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
66 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
67
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000068- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
69 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
70 regular expression.
71
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000072- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
73 thread-safe.
74
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000075- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
76 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
77 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
78
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +000079- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
80

82 menu entries were not deleted.
83
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +000084- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
85 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
86
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +000087- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
88 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
89
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000090- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
91 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
92 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
93
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000094- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
95 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
96 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
97
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000098- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
99 the reload() built-in has been removed.
100
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000101- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000102 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000103 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

107 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000108
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000109- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
110 raised an AttributeError.
111
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000112- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000113 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
114 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000115
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000116- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
117 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
118

135 configuration files.
136
137- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
138
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000139- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
140 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
141 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
142
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000143- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
144 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
145 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
146

151
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000152Documentation
153-------------
154
155- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
156 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
157 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
158 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

165
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000166Core and Builtins
167-----------------
168
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000169- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
170 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
171 an integer using operator.index().
172
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000173- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
174 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
175
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000176- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
177 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
178
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000179- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
180 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
181 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
182
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000183- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
184 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
185 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
186 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
187 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
188 level.
189
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000190- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
191 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
192 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
193 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
194 all imports from that module to fail.
195
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000196- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
197 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
198 new-style classes.
199
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000200- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
201 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
202 another file in sys.stdout.
203
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000204- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
205 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
206 another thread's dictionary.
207
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000208- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
209 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
210 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
211 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
212 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
213 10, -1).
214
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000215- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
216 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
217 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000218
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000219- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
220 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
221 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000222
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000223Library
224-------
225
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000226- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
227 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
228 error when they failed.
229
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000230- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
231
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000232- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
233
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000234- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
235

237
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000238- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
239 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
240
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000241- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000242
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000243- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
244 a valid dlerror() message.
245
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000246- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
247 incomplete structure was created.
248

252
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000253- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000254
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000255- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
256 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000257 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000258 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
259 merged into trunk.
260
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000261- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

266
267- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
268 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000269 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000270
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000271- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000272 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000273
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000274- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
275 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
276
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000277- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
278 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

281 interrupted by a signal.
282
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000283- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000284 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
285 Prevents a deadlock.
286
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000287- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
288 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
289 default https port (443).
290
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000291- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
292 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
293 if the new process uses the threading module.

299 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
300 have been added to test_warnings.
301

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000795
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000796- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
797 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
798 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
799 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
800 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
801 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
802 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
803 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
804 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
805 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
806 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
807 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
808 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
809 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
810 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
811 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
812 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
813 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
814 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
815 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
816
817 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
818 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
819 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
820 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
821 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
822 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
823 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
824 access to the underlying socket used.
825
826 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
827 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
828 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000829
830 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000831 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000832 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
833 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
834
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000835 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
836 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000891 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual

893 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
894 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'
895 codec.

1114
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001115- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1116 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1117 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1118 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1119 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1120 module is:
1121 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1122
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001123- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1124 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1125 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1126 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1127 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1128 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1129
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001130- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1131 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1132 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1133 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1134 PyObject_Format().
1135
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001136- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1137 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1138 state.
